I so agree with you and I found a handbag that to me has wonderful quality. It’s the Ashwood luxury leather from London very very very inexpensive and it is fabulous. I will probably get one in every color. I don’t understand spending that kind of money anymore on luxury handbags you’re paying for a name and do you just want the cloud of carrion a luxury handbag to me, this bag is luxury. It’s beautiful the Leather is the best.

I agree with you, especially the most popular brands. I am apprehensive about mentioning other brands that sell ... technologies, etc. But the nature is the same. The only difference is that it may be possible that a business strategy might be involved. "Customers will buy a replacement if it breaks." I do wonder if we're heading in that direction?

Yes I always buy second hand designer so people have bought their items years before, Designer in the 90s or the early 200's were made so much better, the quality was better because the items weren't as mass produced. You had to wait weeks for a bag to be delivered to you. I don't think that was a bad thing.

I still find Salvatore Ferragamo is top quality. But most of the luxury brands are showing the decline in quality. I am lusting after a Launer custom bag but otherwise, I’m sticking with Tory Burch. Her quality is very good for bags under $1,000.

Hey Sophie! The giant luxury brands have decreased quality to meet the demand and also to pocket in more money. But, I do believe that the quiet luxury brands like Kiton, Brunello Cuccinelli, and Loro Piana have great bags (as a male lol don’t know what’s “cute” and what isn’t) but their bags range from $2-4k which is Louis Vuitton money. Plus, they’re unique bags that you won’t see that often. Don’t know if women are into buying bags from a brand known for male clothing but you should check them out.

I think Loewe makes excellent, quality bags. YSL bags are pretty good too but some of their most classic designs are not user friendly at all. I just sold 2 YSL bags because they were so annoying! Coach also makes quality products & are very reasonably priced. Great video, Sophie. Your background today is lovely. Off topic, RIP, Jane Birkin.

I almost mentioned Coach in my comment. I received a Coach bag at the same time as my first online LV purchase. I was surprised at how LV just dropped my 2 straps with all that hardware inside the bag, placed the bag in a dust bag, then in an over-sized LV box to knock around during shipping. There were scratches on the hardware when it arrived in addition to several other quality issues (IMO). My Coach bag was wrapped like their grandmother's heirloom china right down to foam protectors on each zipper pull. This reassures me that I'm getting a Coach bag that's never been used. I have a suspicion that might not have been the case with the LV I received.

Totally agree. I miss the time I enjoyed my luxury items. I was willing to pay big money on luxury items, cause I used to appreciate their quality and artisanal works. I'm sure it was worth every penny. Unfortunately nowadays I'm da*n disappointed. My new LV bag lost an eyelet after 1 dayout. I had to visit a boutique and wait 3 whole months, but guess what? It happened again. The bag sleeps in my closet with other expensive faulty ones. They're not LUXURY anymore.

Totally agree. The quality of the luxury brands went downhill over the last decade or so. With the number of collections being released these days, it's impossible to deliver superb quality. My bags from twenty years ago look much better than the more recent ones. The last decent bag I bought was YSL College bag which I got ten years ago and it's still in great condition. I was trying to get something this year for my big birthday and I think I've returned like seven bags due to poor quality. I literally gave up on trying to find something perfect. Also it's difficult to predict if something will wear well or not. Only once you've worn the item over a period of time, you will know how it performs. I think that lot of these so called Superbrands rely on their fame and heritage and take advantage by simply splashing their logo on anything they can as they know they will make tons of money. The times where design and craftsmanship were priority , not logo, are over unfortunately.

I recently checked out the new ysl College bag and quality was AWFUL! It looked so cheap! The leather was sort of hard and plastic like. So disappointing! This was Selfridges in Manchester. I’ve recently bought a bag from Tory Burch and the quality is excellent! LV are way overpriced, along with Dior and Chanel. Celine is still good quality but I don’t like the bags much.

Learning about sewing professional finishings, has really helped me to see if items are high quality or not. Certain ways to do linings, reinforcements, etc. What I found the most surprising, is no brand seems to be consistent. They'll have two jackets that are very similar. One will be nicely made, the other won't; both will be the same price and in the same shop.

Sophie, the point being is that all of these things are commodities of daily use. A purse is a container to transport things. All purses will fall apart one day, no matter the price tag. And I think that small brands provide betterment quality because of a smaller audience. The problem always comes once businesses scale up. To stay profitable either you have to increase prices or decrease quality. Unfortunately designer brands do both at the same time because they know that people want to show off the logo. Real luxury is anyways time and not commodities. Luxury is an illusion to impress other people you don’t even like. For me, after every luxury purchase I have made in the past there was a huge disappointment on how those things were holding up so I refuse to spend money on it for a long time already. If you look for good quality brands I would recommend to look at sustainable fashion brands like Sézane that come with a good quality at a friendly price tag.

This comment is about leather accessories. Leather by nature being the skin of an animal will have wear and tear. It is unrealistic to think areas that regularly touch surfaces will not show wear and tear. As for the metals used, again metal scratches. If the metal is painted to have another colour it will not stand up to regularly wear the same way as chemically treated metal. A bag that costs 4000 will wear and tear the same as a 400 bag.

The wear you showed on the back of shoes etc is from driving, it happens to all shoes and just like yours its worse on the right shoe because that is the accelerator pedal in the UK, less so on the left shoe as we use the clutch less or have automatic cars. You need to to just get a pair of cheap driving shoes to keep in the car and change shoes when you arrive.

I have been leaning towards brands that are not super saturated on social media which I think is a kiss of death now - especially in the terms of quality. Moynat, Valextra and Delvaux is the way to go for me. I love Loewe, but I’m a little scared that they might also being heading towards the direction of skimping out on quality which is why they are discontinuing the OG puzzle design for the Edge which I heard is easier and cheaper to make. Also, I’m ok with buying luxury secondhand but definitely pre 2019. I feel that quality of a lot very popular brands really started to decline after 2019.

35 years ago, I bought 2 LV duffel travel bags. The zip went on one about 15 years ago. I had it fixed and asked at the shop if I should just buy a new one instead. The assistant at LV told me that the quality is much worse these days. The canvas for a start is thinner. I don't think 'luxury' is very high quality anymore. Brands are just responding to the huge surge in sales. I don't buy luxury goods anymore. It's all hype.

So I have a Aspinal cardholder that I have used every single day for a little over a year and it definitely looks quite worn and it makes me sad but I used to just throw it in my pocket so I can see why it would be as worn as it is. It isn’t totally falling apart though which is nice lol. I can see how the wear on my item is just from how rough I’ve been on it but it’s still a little sad to see it compared to how it used to look. I’ve been looking for one in the same color for a while now but I don’t think they have it anymore. Now I know though that if I want something to last I should rotate it so it’s used less and also put it in a purse lol.

The accessibility came with the internet and the fact that the quality is decreasing is due to the new generations and the new world being richer, so the brands can get away with it.. Doesn’t justify bad quality though. But as long as the new market (especially the Chinese) scream for the brands, they will produce whatever and still being able to sell. Only exception is Hermes, they don’t seem to give into this. My opinion of course. 😊

If I spend anything above 500€ for a bag, it better be good quality. Leather is expensive compared to plastic but in absolute terms it's not out of reach. We are used to the prices and qualities of fast fashion, that's why anything that's not polyester must have a hefty price tag. A bag should not cost more than 2000£/$/€ and that only if it is hand made.

Will never buy new pieces again, the quality is so bad and everybody is wearing the same thing. tThe prices make no sense for what you get. Only vintage for me and the one of a kind pieces.

High end brands are becoming more of cheaply made fast fashion.

So far, I'm most excited about my Celine bags as far as quality is concerned. I hardly ever use my Dior clutch so I can't say anything about that.... I will say, though, that ever since Karl Lagerfeld's death Chanel's quality has gone downhill. I keep telling myself that these quality issues wouldn't have happened with him still around. 😕

Mass production from China, what do you expect. A handbag for $2,000-$5000 is not really expensive luxury. It's luxury for the people who cannot really afford it. 😢

There are many more millionaires made each day now than 25 years ago. The designer brands have become fat, proud and lazy. Solution is to NOT buy their expensive brands anymore! Buy good non brands AND save your MONEY, ladies! ❤

The majority of my extensive collection is Kate Spade, Coach, Tory Burch, Polene, Aspinal of London. They quality is great. The more high end designers increase their prices the more I turn to these brands. I’m happy enough with the lower end brands and happy to invest the money I would have spent on the higher end designers.

I second this! I've stopped buying Louis Vuitton items due to personal experiences with bad quality items, I now mainly purchase from Aspinal of London and Coach. I genuinely think the quality is better and they wear much better too.

I used to love leather goods (not logo canvas ETC) coach, TB, and KS in the early 2000s but they are sooo over done from outlets that in my opinion it has lost its luxury exclusivity appeal.

I think the high end luxury bags do have good quality but they cannot really do more for them to make them perfect and yet the prices are increasing ridiculously. I do have some luxury bags but that's it. I will never buy form those fashion houses anymore and I do find more joy in my "contemporary" collections without hurting my bank. I'd rather spend my money in travelling.

@@MsLuvkdthat’s just it. I’d expect to start seeing pure artistry for the 11k price tag the Chanel classic flap has in Canada right now. I feel like the only option is lesser known brands who still care about the artistry of bags instead of mass manufacturing.

No background music needed. Love your content. Even though the quality can be poor depending on the item, we are paying for the brand unfortunately.. once we stop feeling we need to carry a certain brand, then our hard earned money will stay in our pocket.

I'm shocked at all these defects, and that people are still buying with these awful inflated prices. I used to eye the Chanel coco and filagree cases, but wow, if I ever want to own I'd prefer to buy preloved in Japan with their strict no counterfeit laws. There's a beautiful series of Amore boutiques in Tokyo. I visited one in Shibuya-Harajuku while on vacation in 2019. They have such gorgeous Chanel and other designer items there. Even spotted the iconic Jackie Kennedy pink suit.

I love shopping the pre-loved market. With patience and research you get the good quality bags of yore. I’m not talking about the brand new Birkins and Kellys that end up there at ridiculously inflated prices, but rather beautiful old gems like classic flaps and discontinued styles, limited editions etc. The hunt is fun too :) great video

Good quality with luxury brands is a rare thing these days. This imo is why contemporary brands are soaring right now. I have collected luxury for 30+ yrs, everything I’ve purchased the last 5 yrs doesn’t compare to older stuff. Hermes is the only brand I’ve not had an issue with, Gucci and Loewe have been 99% perfect. The worst for me has been Chanel and LV, I’ve returned so many items that I gave up on those brands. In walks Coach, Aspinal, Marc Jacobs- excellent pricing and generally great quality.

We're really paying for the name and not the quality. I prefer lower end designer,s like Kate Spade, Coach, and even Senreve. Senreve is the most expensive bags I own. No matter the quality, you will ahve wear and tear, so I choose to go cheaper so that I don't lose so much money. If you have the money, then buy the higher end brands, but know you're paying for the name.

I have a few pieces of LV from about 25 years ago, I am very gentle with my fancy things and those bags look so good. I think what has happen is that they no longer do quality control because you have messed up stitches, shapes and hardware. I haven't bought anything in a long while because I am trying to enjoy what I have.

Hi Sophie, no music is good for me :). I have a YSL bag that its absolutely gorgeous, but i had to change the first one i bought because quality issues, i learned from you that if you are paying that kind of money you should get a perfect bag. They gave another bag no questions asked, and I still think is the most beautiful bag I have. That being said i don't think i will be paying that much money for a bag ever again. Im looking to Marc Jacobs, and Coach for lovely bags that wont break the bank. Also if my bag got stolen that would be so devastating so i dont even want to use it that much. Am I the only one?
Potentially Controversial - Why I haven't bought these items (but I want them).
