WHY LUXURY DESIGN HOUSES DON’T MAKE VEGAN BAGS AND ACCESSORIES.
A very interesting topic this one, and one that a lot of you have asked me to discuss over the years! I found myself learning about vegan leathers after being given a vegan bag (that I show in this). It was really fascinating to learn about the processes, and I thought “Hmm, why don’t any of the big brands make non-leather goods?”
My verdict is that (currently, from what I’ve seen), we’re getting REALLY close to some good quality vegan leathers, but most still rely on plastics. Not many of the leathers I saw actually looked that good. So my guess is that it’s a combination of: Cost - non-leather bags are sold for less, when there’s a chance that creating quality faux leathers makes it cost prohibitive?
Also, is it perhaps an ingrained habit, that we all predominantly buy leather when it comes to designer goods? Let me know what you think in the comments!

It's really funny to me that people in the comments argue that leather is more ecological as a gotcha. The whole point is people don't feel comfortable wearing leather, even if it lasts ages, I don't want a skin bag even if it's more aesthetically pleasing or longer lasting. hope more designers go for vegan bags

I am vegetarian and I had a lot of inner fights regarding leather. But I realized that PU handbags and cheap shoes I need to change every single year are even worse - just producing more waste (it will decompose for decades) which will eventually cause death of more animals. I will stick to leather until Pinatex will be widely used and match the real handbags in designs and elegance.

I’m 2 things - A vegan and a Sophie lover ! Myself and my family are vegan and would love some true luxury brands to embrace veganism. Don’t think “I’m wearing plastic” Think - “I’m wearing dead animal skin” I agree producing new plastic is wasteful , but using the by product of other natural resources, such as coconut or pineapple or any other natural source would be far more sustainable. And a range of recycled faux leather, which looks good and has wearability, style and the wow factor - minus the death, murder, barbarism and blood would be a winner all round. I appreciate you doing this video and broadening your viewpoint 🖤🌱🌱🌱 Ps that little leather tag has stopped me so many times ! And the prada nylon has leather on their triangle logo - so annoying. ..... there is a massive market of vegans that want luxury, when will people realise leather doesn’t mean luxury it means a living being died for your pleasure 🥺🥺

Buying pre-loved can be an alternative, i personally don’t feel comfortable wearing full leather but i consider buying canvas bags (WITH ANNOYING TINY LEATHER PARTS) pre-loved! Also, givenchy has PU version of antigona, Prada re-edition 2000 is nylon (whereas re-edition 2005 is leather+nylon), hermes her bag has the least amount of leather out of the all hermes bags! I hope brands will take a little bit of responsibility and at least make their canvas bags vegan asap. Loved the video 💕

Let's call it the way it is. Second hand items. If you dig hard enough you can find amazing things that are second hand and they cost pretty much nothing. I bought a true fur coat second hand. The dry cleaning costed more than the coat itself but it was so worth it because it is hot unlike any other material. Now I understand how classic Hollywood actresses were wearing sleeveless dresses in the middle of the winter and a huge fur coat.

no matter how you slice it, at the end of the day, it's plastic which ultimately comes from petrochemicals. You can tell yourself, "oh it's made from recycle...." In reality, it's hard to maintain consistent quality with recycled plastic and, as a society are we not trying to reduce our dependency on plastic? I'm all for making a choice to go non leather. But, must that mean going plastic?

Yes that’s what I thought! I’ve tried to be quite balanced in this, exploring all angles. Personally, if Chanel made the classic flap in both leather and a plastic, I’d go for the leather every time. I just think it wears better and doesn’t look so cheap. And for sure, there are environmental/ethical issues with leather, but I don’t think that making things out of crude oil is the way to go either 🙈 Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts btw!!xx

The pineapple fabric idea is wonderful, I love the idea of using leftover, or otherwise wasted materials for another use. I can’t wait for this to come into the mainstream. I know it doesn’t look “premium”, but shabby chic is a thing, and the market for it may just be Caribbean, Asian and South American markets. I have shoes that are nearly 15 years old and are still in great condition. And personally, I'd rather buy less over the years and not encourage overproduction than feel guilty about wearing leather. The thing that gets me is that most vegan products are some kind of polyurethane (so plastic) and that's not better for the environment by any means🤷‍♀️ but anyway great video, lots of good info!

I'm dietary vegan but i use real leather, silk & wool when it comes to clothes/bags etc because 99% of alternatives are plastic-based synthetics. I majored in ecology and know that plastic waste kills more fauna (specifically marine fauna) than cattle farming ever had or will. Eliminating animal products by adding plastics is hurting more animals than it saves. I wish people knew that. Vegan materials are great but only if they are just as biodegradable. My advice to anyone who cares to do a net good as opposed to just feel good about their diets/lifestyle is to prioritize environmentally friendly materials over vegan materials when they cannot have both. I use this as a rule of thumb.

@@carolinaochoa7900 But from an enviornmental/ecology viewpoint, killing more fauna is horrible. You shouldn't really differentiate between animals and plants. I don’t think we need to make bags fully vegan or even have vegan leather in terms for me it’s more about sustainability, we have a huge meat industry where leather is a byproduct a lot of brands such as coach use these leathers & do not raise animals to kill for bags. I was vegan for 5 years and still choose to not drink milk or eat eggs etc but surely it’s more wasteful to allow animal skins to go to completely unused and to waste. Of course I respect everyone’s personal decision and it’s a sensitive subject for some! Thanks for another great video Sophie xx

Actually leather in general needs a lot of chemicals not rot (think of your bag as a non human mummy), so much so that letting the skin of animals killed in the meat industry decompone in the landfill is way more environmentally frriendly and has a smalle carbon footprint than using it for shoes and bags. Btw when you thought the Dior were vegan and realized they have that one leather tag that disqualifies them, is EXACTLY how vegetarians feel when they’re reading a dessert menu and something looks delicious until you realize it has gelatin or animal lard in it 😂😂

"Vegan leather" is such a misleading term because they're implying that something which isn't leather is going to have the same qualities as leather when it obviously isn't. It's like calling every heavy knitted material "artificial wool". They should just call it PU or pinatex or whatever it's *actually* made of

A lot of vegan things are also horrible for the environment because of its material and the fact that it’s still a brand new thing. It makes more sense to just buy vintage things and upcycle them including old leather which is post production so the damage is done.

There are quite a few different brands that have created “leathers” that are quite unique. Pineapple, apple, mango, and many other materials. It’s fascinating to me and some are even more durable than real leather...check Von Holzhausen to see what I mean. Her bags are soft yet they are stain and scratch resistant. I’m a scientist so I love the ingenuity that goes into creating alternative leathers.

Thank you for this video. I am vegan and quite torn about bags, since I really don't feel comfortable wearing leather. I'm looking into second-hand and I also think Angela Roi and Alexandra K bags are a good investment. They look classy and they're durable. Yes, they're probably made out of plastic but with good care I don't see why they shouldn't last many years which seems to be people's main issue with vegan leather. They're also made without human exploitation (unlike most designer brands) which is important for me

I have two Stella Mccartney Falabella bags and they are not crinkly at all. I have a Beckett bag from 2014 (I think) and it's lined in material that feels like suede. Ive had that bag for years and it does not show wear or tear. That "leather" does not scratch or wrinkle. Same can be said for Stella Mccartney boots. I've had them for 6 years, wore them in NYC rain and snow, and they don't even have one scratch on them. Stella Mccartney is the only luxury design brand that always works on R&D and innovates. I can't wait for bags made out of mushroom leather. I did buy her Belen Fur Free Fur coat because it looked so good and the faux fur is supposed to be recyclable, but I had to return it because it looked and felt so thin. It would not keep me warm in the winter.

Luxury brands have to find an alternative. Otherwise, the industry will fall in the next 10 years. No matter how much money people have, young generations do not tolerate real leather and it is almost a taboo admitting you have a piece made out of an animal, no matter if you're vegan or not. I am speaking from my experience but also from Marketing studies I have been doing for the past 2 years. I would recommend people to go for the pre-loved market which is what I do until brands find better solutions, as I do not agree with promoting new production of leather but at the same time, I also do not agree with materials made out of plastic and in the end fast fashion is the worse option (less ethical and environmental friendly) and you should avoid it if you have that privilege. If you still really want a new leather bag, I would consider buying from Coach, they only use skin that would be a waste from the meat industry, so they are not raising and killing animals on purpose, they only use what would end up in the landfill anyway!

Spring is not far away and you might like to wear those sun shades. Also keeping in mind direct sunshine is not good for your eyes. Squinting gives you wrinkles. I don’t purchase much faux leather for bags because ones I loved the material deteriorated. I don’t want to pay good money for something that isn’t going to last. Though a good brand to look at if you want something non leather and different is Harveys Seatbelt Bags. They are a small operation in California who sell handmade seatbelt bags and various accessories (not all seatbelt) . They seem to have made leather bags many years ago but now their bags are made out of seatbelts. They have made a lot of different styles and colors (many have to be purchased on 3rd party sites). I love their bags and clutch wallets, etc.

Pineapple fiber has been used since the 17th century in the Philippines actually... "Piña is a pineapple fiber made from the leaves of a pineapple plant and is commonly used in the Philippines. It is sometimes combined with silk or polyester to create a textile fabric. Piña's name comes from the Spanish word piña which literally means pineapple."

My personal hot take is what is the most sustainable - realistically the meat and leather industry is ALWAYS going to exist. Leather can be reworked, repaired, and last potentially for decades (my mum has a leather jacket from the 80's that's still incredibly good condition) Leather will eventually decompose, faux leather made from petrochemicals simply wont, it can be recycled to an extent but in the end it will become obsolete and will be sent to landfill. I'd prefer to buy leather second hand or preloved so I'm not directly contributing to the demand for new leather products, but in terms of longevity and sustainability leather is the better choice.

This was an interest video, dear Sophie. I tried vegan bags and vegan shoes, and they just didn't worked out for me. I just won't buy vegan luxury bags because the technology is not there for the longevity of these vegan bags. It would be a waste of money to me. I just won't eat much meats or eggs to balance out my leather bags, and my Canada Goose jackets. 😊 Thank you for sharing. 😃❤️

I've been told that in order for something to be a true vegan leather it cannot have any glue or anything made with animal bi product. Just because a bag has no leather doesn't mean it's vegan. Most all brands use some sort of glue. Some leathers such as Patricia Nash can be traced back to the meat industry and not out just killing animals in order to have their skins.

If designers fazed out least her and made it the "exclusive" and marketed/invested in more "vegan" options, it's a kind of "if you build it, they will come". As far as your sunnies, I think you did very well. Each style exudes an individual persona. The first pair are very flattering pair for everyday. Hi Sophie! Really interesting (and important) topic. I know not everyone is going to read this but actually all these pineapple, apple, mango leathers are not entirely plastic free! There is some plastic involved in the production, just as you need some new plastic while producing with recycled plastic/materials. There is one true plastic free vegan alternative as I know: Mylo (which is trademarked - small brands can't afford to buy licenses probably). On the website it says: It will be exclusive produced for Stella Mccartney, adidas and lululemon beginning from this year. I guess lvmh has something to do with it? (Stella -> LVMH) I am not judging anyone who buys leather, plastic (that is what I call 'vegan leather; it's a marketing term imo) oder these minimal plastic leather alternatives. It's important to inform yourself and know your stance though. :)

I keep looking at the Anya Hindmarch 'I'm a plastic bag', and really appreciate all the product development that's gone into it.(Recycled bottles, windscreens and leather piping-which they say was actually the most eco-friendly option in the end). However, its about £700 and there are aesthetically similar tote bags, e.g. Tory Burch, for much less. I wouldn't be so indecisive with a leather bag that I liked. Leather suggests quality/longevity of a piece, which justifies the spending! haha! but with plastic, dropping all that cash feels less like a good investment.
