They actually do sound different, bore, bell and flare makes quite a difference. The bone sounds richer while the trumpet sounds...well...trumpety! Great demonstration!

I closed my eyes while you played the two. I could hear a difference and think the slide trumpet sounds more like a trumpet and the soprano trombone sounds more like a trombone. But the difference is indeed subtle. The different bore sized could account for some of that. And there is no doubt an inherent ability of anyone playing them to tweak the timbre of each instrument towards one sound or the other.

Admittedly my experiences listening to brass for distinctions comes from high school marching and concert bands, but there's a brightness to the point of being harsh out of the slide-trumpet that isn't present in the soprano-trombone. It's like the soprano-trombone has a wider array of resonances for a richer sound across the spectrum than the slide-trumpet has.

I haven't heard soprano trombones being played very often before, and I gotta say it is so marvelous to hear what basically sounds like a trumpet, yet it can slur the notes. That is so cool. I gotta get one of these.

It's sometimes argued at similar tubing length (thus pitch) trombones have a larger bore and a more cylindrical shape, while trumpets have a narrower bore and a longer section of conical tubing. Thus, that seems to be what you have to look for to tell a slide trumpet from a soprano trombone, or a valve trombone from a bass trumpet.

Classifications are difficult for most things Definitions are difficult for most things Is a sousaphone a tuba? Yes Is the tuba a sousaphone? No Yet I bet someone will still disagree with me on those two questions. Although if we take a post-modernist perspective to it... why does it matter? There Is no correct answer. The slide trumpet to me ever so slightly brighter, I was expecting it to sound stuffier, it kinda did but just a tiny tiny bit, negligible honestly. Might be observation bias. The biggest thing I noticed was the slide trumpet sounded sharper, I suspect it was harder to play given the landmarks are different from the soprano trombone and perhaps that's why it was sharper. I definitely prefer trombones over any instrument so even if I'm extremely biased I prefer the soprano trombone even to a valve trumpet, I just love that extra clarity that being so close to a perfect resonator gives the instrument, such a flexible timbre, I'm sad that soprano trombones aren't used more often.
@mal2ksc
@mal2ksc 2 жыл бұрын
The slide trumpet doesn't have a separate tuning slide, so it probably would have been better to play it first and then match the soprano trombone's pitch to it. They could be presented in either order in video, but you'd have to do the slide trumpet first to find out where its intonation is today.

Does the tighter turn on the slide trumpet lead to more resistance when playing? I'm guessing it would regardless with the smaller bore, but curious how much that smaller turn radius might contribute.

I'm a trumpet player who also owns a Jupiter soprano trombone, purchased circa 1988 and looking a little poorer than yours. IMHO it's only a novelty horn and shouldn't be taken too seriously. I've had a bit of fun with it, especially while playing it in a rock band. But perhaps I'm doing it a disservice? I think I prefer your performance on the soprano trombone over the slide trumpet. Thank you so much for sharing this video and enlightening us.

Good day. Watching your channel has inspired me to pick up a trumpet after 30 yrs. I bought a cheap trumpet and I am quite pleased that I can still play and read music. I would like to know what is a good trumpet that can hit the notes easier especially the higher ones. It seems I have to tongue the notes with more pressure to hit them on tune. Before I could just slide up and down between notes using just my lip pressure. I don't mind spending more money but I want a good horn. Please advise. Sincerely Chris Reinhart

There's no magic substitute for practice, and any instrument that makes you hit some higher notes easier will come at the cost of not being able to play other notes, or will sacrifice your tone.

In the video, the side trumpet sounds significantly louder. I'm wondering if this is a true representation of the sound, or if it's just a side effect of the bell being closer to the camera.
@adamhero459

My Jupiter "slide trumpet" looks like a soprano trombone and sounds like a B Flat Trumpet. Cornet playing with a trumpet? Close enough and my 3 year old is going to learn on my Jupiter slide trumpet as opposed to my valved trumpet. Because awesome.

If they do the same thing and play the same way, apart from naming and slight physical differences I didn't think it really matter, then I heard your playing. I was surprised that the slide trumpet actually sounded like a trumpet rather than a trombone but that could partly be down to the mouthpiece.

In Italian, the trumpet is "La Tromba" and the trombone is "Il Trombone," meaning "large trumpet." Therefore, trumpets and trombones are all trumpets. The soprano is the trumpet, and the lower pitched versions are the "large trumpets," or trombones in Italian. So it's kinda moot to call the soprano horn a "soprano trombone." It's a soprano trumpet. A bass trombone is actually a bass trumpet. That's another one- what has always been called a "bass trumpet" is actually a coiled-up tenor valve trombone. They do not play in the actual bass range, so that name is a misnomer, but I digress.... Having a slide and it's configuration does not make it a trombone. I see lots of marching valve trombones that are so coiled up on themselves that they don't even resemble a typical slide trombone. They look more like that erroneous "bass trumpet" I mentioned earlier. The bore has little to do with it, since a pretty wide variation in bore sizes can be found in all brass instrument families. So "soprano trombone" is just a sales pitch. A soprano trumpet is technically just a trumpet whether it has a slide, valves, or nothing.
@BobAndrson
@BobAndrson Жыл бұрын
Good point. In Italian "Trombone" means "large Trumpet", and at that time, very, very, v e r y, long ago, they were quite similar instruments, mostly distinguished by their length. Both were cylindrical instruments with the same bore size, and the main difference being the length, due to the added slide (on the trombone) verses no slide (OR VALVES) on the Trumpet. And yes, the Trombone was the 'large' (or longer) brass instrument. So in the 1400's they were almost the same instrument, only the Trombone, later known as a Sackbut, was longer due to it's slide. Within a few hundred years each had developed in much different instruments. The Trumpet stayed cylindrical, keeping a similarly sized bore, bell throat and bell. It also added valves. On the other hand, the Trombone greatly increased the size of the bore, became much more conical, (starting at the end of the slide and continued to the end of the bell), giving it a dramatically larger bell throat and doubling the size of the bell. Also a different shaped mouthpiece was used. This all leads to it's distinctly different tone. True, both the Trumpet and the Trombone started at the same piace, but, like most musical instruments (and people!), they have individually progressed, resulting in distinct entities that have little in common with their early ancestors. However if you wish to deny that the Trumpet and Trombone have evolved into unique instruments, both very different than the early Italian Trumpet (which, by the way, was based on two thousand year-old rams horn 'Trumpets'), I would suggest that you ask any pro whos plays either one, if a modern Trumpet or a modern Trombone is like a 1400's 'Trumpet", or better yet, an ancient rams horn! Or you could simply continue to pretend you're living in Medieval Italy. In boca al lupo!

To keep things simple. Trombones are just lower pitched Trumpets that use slides. And sometimes even Trombones are made using valves. As for the two instruments demonstrated here. they sound the same. If there is a difference, it'd be because the 'soprano trombone' has a slightly larger bore than the Slide Trumpet.
