I never caught it until now but when Richie tells Tony that Dave is into him for 8 grand you can see the wheels immediately start turning in Tony's head. Tony knew he wasn't getting that money back lmao. Even all these years later still finding subtle acting chops in here that show why this was the great show in terms of acting.

"this motherless fuck is into me for 8 large". The look on Tone's face...he almost ALMOST considers acknowledging Richie's very legitimate beef. And dramatically changes tone from "how dare you disrespect my game" to "if I don't tax you how's it gonna look". Brilliant.

Tia Dont want people to think I'm some dumb white guy that thinks he knows about the mafia by watching a few TV shows and reading a couple books, then leaving some insightful comments on KZbin correcting people on what the real Cosa Nostra is like.

I think David Proval deserves a lot more of the credit for putting The Sopranos on the map. Gandolfini gets to shine when he has a true acting equal. If there wasn't Richie to make Tony more empathetic to us viewers for why he had to be the monster he was...I don't know if the show works ultimately. You had to believe he had no choice but to be like he was to keep psychos and maniacs like Richie at bay. It took a hell of an actor to pull that off. Some cheesey B side mob movie extra wasn't gonna make that happen. I love hating Richie. David Proval killed the role

@@joshschaeffer3300 that's one of the points of the series, though. head of some pissant criminal organization, in a three million dollar mansion (which his place was not btw)? three million dollar mansions are nothing to anybody of substance. thirty million dollar mansions are trinkets to anybody who actually matters. unlike in other depictions of the mafia (like the godfather) these mobsters are, at best, at their highest aspirations, upper middle class, using outdated, inefficient methods to rake the top off a small profit pool. any (nominally) legal financial institution is making orders of magnitude more off the same targets than these mafiosi are. they have been eclipsed by the modern face of capitalism.

My wife and I are rewatching the whole series and I’ve definitely found that these short clips have helped me to finally feel like I’m tracking all the story lines. Johnny Sac is a good example. I never really understood until now that part of John Sacrimone’s stated role as Lupertazzi Underboss was that he was to be liaison to the New Jersey family on construction and other things. That’s why we see a NY guy like John spending so much time in Jersey and with the Soprano guys.

That’s the whole point I made in another comment. All of these professional law abiding citizens playing poker at a game hosted by mobsters. You have Feech running the show for a while. He’s not as sophisticated as the clientele and he’s even worse because he is acclimating to civilian life. Then you have Richie who just g out of prison. He walks in and starts trouble like he’s going to break knee caps. All in front of the professional law abiding citizens. I can’t believe Tony didn’t whack him for that. There’s a time and place for everything.

To me one of the greatest parts of writing Richie's dialogue is that he basically always has a valid point, and he spent energy carefully explaining his valid points to others. If you take out how crazy and aggressive and shitty he is, you are left with a very logical guy, which is why I think the other characters struggled to make a dent on him. Fascinating writing, truly fascinating writing. Even though he is obviously a bad vibe and he's gotta go at some point, in a wonderfully twisted way he is actually a very sympathetic character.

Well in this case he was both right and wrong. Right in the fact that the guy should never have been allowed into the game but unless he told Tony the guy owed him money why would Tony say no. Dead wrong in disrespecting the game and Tony, if he had a problem like he did he should've taken it up with Tony in the kitchen and not start a fucking rumble in front of everybody!
@sliceserve234
@sliceserve234 3 жыл бұрын
Even so, it was STILL an indirect favor to Tony, as Tony had not realized yet the guy wouldn't be good for it. Tony's lack of judgment letting the guy into the game can be seen as the root cause of the problems, as opposed to Richie's aggressions.

@@patrickbyrne5070 True. But that's what I am saying is the genius of writing the character. You can tell watching the guy in 10 seconds he isn't going to make it, and yet, in almost every scene HE is clearly the one making the most sense.
