I think there's something distinctly toxic about this behavior that's antithetical to the "nice guy" mentality. The idea that my girlfriend "is way out of my league" is stupid and would really sell myself short. I don't want a girl that wouldn't treat me as an equal, and I wouldn't treat her different than I would others. To put so little value in my own time or effort would be (kind of) pathetic: The thinking behind all this isn't "putting women ahead of men" so much as it is men just devaluing themselves to the point of romanticizing groveling.
