I remember when our church tried to tell us KISS stood for Kids In Satan's Service and I was like, "no way, they helped Scooby-doo and the gang solve that mystery in the haunted amusement park!" Probably how I started to really question the so-called authority figures.

One could argue that they did sell out in the 80's and tried to be a metal hair band like Twisted Sister, Poison, Motley Crew
@jasonlieberman4606
@jasonlieberman4606 3 жыл бұрын
@@streetguru3054 they went metal before those bands even existed. They delved into some harder sounds right at the tail end of the 70s, and took off their makeup shortly after Vinnie replaced Ace in '81. The earlier part of that foray into metal is not to be dismissed. Creatures of the Night, Lick it Up, and Animalize had some wicked old school bangers with a sound more akin to Scorpions than to Poison, whose scene was barely beginning to get respect from the industry. If there's a time they betrayed their own creative interest in favor of selling better, it's when they put the makeup back on over a decade later. .. But metal Kiss is vastly underrated.

You know why young people don't really appreciate Kiss? Because their album sound has been so lousy and thin through 70's. If you only focus on studio albums, their eponymous album (that came in 74, of all things) sounds nowhere near as innovative or stylistically important to hard rock and heavy as things british bands had done in previous 5 years.

Also to follow: Destroyer probably was the biggest influence in terms of metal, but again it came same year as Sad Wings of Destiny, Virgin Killer, Rainbow Rising etc... Looking anachronistically, it makes them sound dated at the time.

You are correct! KISS was the Slipknot of the 70's, they came up with whole hidden identity thing and for almost 10 years they were able to keep what they really looked like a secret, of course the media actually was playing along with them lol. I mean, they never hid their true names or where they went to school or who they hung out with so when you think about it, somebody had to have a yearbook picture of them, a concert picture of them from previous bands. In fact drummer Peter Criss was in a band called Chelsea and Chelsea made one album and on the cover of that album there was Peter Criss (Crisceolo, however he spelled it lol) without any make up. Wicked Lester, Paul and Gene's old band had flyers all over NYC with their pictures on it. So now looking back we can see that the media was not interested in showing us their true identities because it was all part of the show, part of the game. Lol in today's world the media would reveal their true identity so fast it would make your head spin.

Ghost being called the Kiss of today hurts inside. Ghost came, played their music and got a following because as James Hetfield said, they were like a breath of fresh air in today's rock and metal. Ghost is one of the nicest and most humble modern bands and their gimmick actually fits the music. Kiss on the other hand, well they had an entirely different setting and it's no secret that Paul and Gene are quite far from humble and nice.

The line between hard rock and metal is blurry, and changes with time. But KISS was much more "metal" than, say, Aerosmith, Queen, Pink Floyd or even Led Zeppelin. Those were their contemporaries in the 70s. Even in the 80s, they were just as Glam Metal as Poison, or Dokken, or The Scorpions.

They were not a metal band. Neither are Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple. Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly and Steppenwolf were around half a decade before Kiss, but they're also not metal, though I think they were more metal than Kiss, musically. Kiss kinda became metal in the 80's when they changed their sound and took off the makeup. I can't think of a legitimately metal American band before Van Halen, who get to be metal by default of being exactly what metal became for a while.
@Deucealive75
@Deucealive75 4 жыл бұрын
@@morgellon9449 That's your opinion. KISS were described in the mid seventies with the words heavy metal in one connotation or another by the rock media. Billboard said in a review of their Vegas concert in May of 75 that KISS "unleashed controlled chaos in visual heavy metal" with a sound that rivaled "nuclear detonations at nearby Yucca Flats." There was another one with a British reporter who used the words heavy metal when reporting on the first KISS visit to England in early 76. In 2020 it's easy to say KISS weren't metal but in 1975 you couldn't. Also. KISS was one of the few bands back then that would actually call themselves heavy metal. One of their early (maybe 1973) concert announcement posters that they made up read "Heavy Metal masters KISS".

@@morgellon9449 Interesting analysis, though not one i can entirely agree with. First of all, many fans would laugh at the suggestion that Van Halen is metal. I think they are, but they're really a different kind of metal than say Iron Maiden. But before VH there was Blue Oyster Cult, Mountain, Iron Butterfly, Montrose, among others. But let's face it, "heavy metal" as a genre has been twisted and sliced and smashed into a bunch of different sub-genres. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple all can make a claim to playing metal, although both Zeppelin and Purple wanted nothing to do with the term. Fact: Geezer Butler is quoted in Tony Iommi's autobiography "Iron Man" that Zeppelin was the "heaviest thing around," and their goal was to be heavier. Zeppelin was clearly heavy. It was a bluesy heavy, mostly, but a handful of songs off LZ I and III, along with Immigrant Song from III are heavy metal-esque. Zeppelin was compared to Cream and Hendrix in those early years ('68 as the New Yardbirds, '69-70 as Zeppelin). Sabbath added the "doom" to the metal sound. At the same time, Purple, Mark II with Iam Gillian on vocals, added technicality and speed to their new metal sound. So... heavy metal: bluesy for Zeppelin, doom like for Sabbath, and technical virtuosity and speed for Purple. All metal. But wait! Right around this time two other bands came on the scene (more than two, really, but bare with me). They were the Scorpions and Judas Priest. Listen to those old Scorpion records with Uli Roth and Michael Schenker on guitars. '72s Lonesome Crow, Fly to the Rainbow in '74 -- that's metal, baby! And nothing like the Unholy Trinity, either. The Scorpions, and in '74 Priest as well, followed the metal of Hendrix, who happens to be American. Read KK Downing's recent autobiography. He says it straight: Priest's biggest influence was not Sabbath, it was Hendrix. Downing says that metal started with Hendrix. It's right there in his book. (Great read BTW.) And, Downing adds, that between '74-'78 only one band was playing the kind of speed driven, riff based metal that Priest was playing and that was the Scorpions. Of course, Uli Roth married Hendrix's girlfriend after Hendrix died. Ahhh, the Hendrix-Scorps-Priest connection. Around this time...'76... Blackmore teams up with Ronnie James Dio to produce what many (many many) critics say is the first true heavy metal album, Rainbow Rising. I don't agree, but for the type of metal the critics are referring to...maybe it is. Anyhow, my point is that heavy metal has tons of beginnings and off shoots. But there's lots of metal, even Zeppelin (whether Page and Plant like it or not). Oh... I watched a KZbin video where Pete Townshend makes the claim to have started metal. Now that's something I can't agree to! I love the Who, but they were never metal! Punk, edgy hard rock...but metal? Come on, Pete!

It always strikes me how influential and popular this band is in the U.S... While here in France (and judging by Hansi Kürsch's words here, I think it's safe to say in much of Europe...), they don't seem to have gained much popularity. I've lived here for over 40 years now, and I've never met or heard ANYONE admit they liked or even listened to Kiss (EDIT: a friend of mine has mentionned them a few times on his Facebook page and he admittedly likes them... But he's like 15 years younger than I am, a history teacher and a 70's metal fanatic). Most people will have no problem saying they like Queen, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC or Aerosmith... OF COURSE ! But Kiss... Nope. I've seen a few teenagers wearing Kiss T-shirts in the past 10 years... But they were only girls. And anyway it's only in recent times that I've noticed these T-shirts. I must admit the same goes for Boston and even RUSH (strangely overlooked on this side of the Atlantic...) or Lynyrd Skynyrd to some extent. Bad Company and The Sparks are also fairly unkown 70's bands here... But that might be more of a generational thing. Anyway, I think all the "over-the-top aspects" of Kiss (which are probably the reason they are loved so much in the U.S.) are what makes them so unpopular over here. Which is kind of odd... Since Rammstein is VERY popular here. Go figure !...

I know a few of the football players from that season and it was definitely not staged by the band especially considering the city council at the time would not have allowed the band to come if they felt it could bring any bad press to the area. Cadillac KISS visit was just something that happened because the coach pulled it off and was put together in a short time that could never be pulled off again. We have the KISS visit, you all have Maynard James Keenan and his dad teaching HS in Ludington. I would have rather known Maynard growing up. Scottville should put a Maynard monument up.

It doesn't matter if you like them, love them, or hate them. They left their mark, sold millions of records, have a "KISS ARMY" (how many other bands can say that), and most importantly they've been around for almost 50 years. 50 YEARS!! They must have done something right.

Kiss was probably the first ever band to call themselves Heavy Metal, as it was used on their early flyers as far back as 1973. While the other bands of the 70s didn't like the term, as they saw it as derogatory.... yes including Sabbath and Priest. Who both only eventually embraced the term because of the NWOBHM movement.

KISS were more influential in the theatrics department than actual musical innovation. They started out as basically just a dirty, sleazy hard rock band with a unique image. Other than Frehley, they aren't really renowned as either masterful musicians or vocalists. Still, they've earned their place in the annals of rock and metal, even though they did sell out basically any time the musical landscape changed.

When Ace Frehley, got electrocuted at a KISS gig in 1973, Gene Simmons called Ken Schaffer, who had invented a wireless guitar system. Schaffers system allowed KISS to utilize elaborate stage setups, go wireless, and not get electrocuted. He told Schaffer "Ken, we are a brand, not a band"

I interviewed Kiss in 1974 for a local newspaper. And then saw the show with Rush opening. After Rush blew me away, I don’t remember much about the kiss set.

Look, KISS might be an influence, but every song is just one or two lines repeated for 4 minutes to the same melody even. I can't listen to them anymore, 25 seconds into the song and you have heard the entire thing already. I guess they have some wild make up though.

"I've got posters on my walls......My favorite rock group,Kiss.... I've got Ace Frehley,and I've got Peter Kris...... waiting there for me,yes I do!" Seriously though, I can't stand Kiss. I just love that Weezer song. Dime loved Kiss. That,if nothing else, validates their existence for me.

It's the younger crowd can never understand just how big they were. I grew up in the 70's and remember when KISS Alive came out. We were all blown away. They were EVERY where. The iconic Farah Fawcett poster was often found right next to the bi-centennial KISS poster. There were KISS comics, KISS movie. It wasn't just the music but the mystery of who they were and what they really looked like. I even gave up on them after Dynasty though. No real use for anything after the solo albums besides Alive II. Oh...and the BIGGEST reason; OUR PARENTS HATED THEM!!! They literally thought they were satanic. The whole "Kings/Knights In Satans Service" (KISS) thing as well helped!
