I love how they emphasize the importance of "negative" emotions. Fear protects you from danger, disgust keeps you healthy, and sometimes, you really need a good cry.

@@SevenEllen i mean, for the most part, it's the lack of interest in activities, especially ones that used to bring joy/excitement, and persistent feelings of apathy in particular, but also anxiety, yes sadness too sometimes, and often experiencing brain fog, feeling tired all the time and/or being unable to sleep or sleeping too much, etc. it's a little too simplified to say depression is just the lack of emotion, OR that it's being sad all the time, neither is 100% accurate. as someone diagnosed with chronic depression myself, it's not like i'm never happy or excited. i have days where i have a lot of fun and i have many happy memories and experiences. but it's just that those feelings are fleeting. i'm most often tired, apathetic, anxious, irritable, and generally feel quite empty. but Inside Out has the best possible simplified explanation of depression: little to no joy/sadness, primary feelings apathy, anger, fear, and disgust.

Yeah, that's what my depression is like, in a simplified form. No sadness, but that moment where she is shut off from *everything*. Not happy, not sad, but unreachable by anything that could touch emotions. Then, when it's over, usually deep muscle aching, like after a full body workout.

Can we all agree that teacher handled her crying beautifully? She wasn't overprotective of Riley nor dismissive. She acknowledged that it can be difficult to move to another place and even told her they are happy to have her. Teachers are really underpaid for everything they do for the future of the world.

Some theories as to why the mom and dad have different “leading” emotions as that as we age, our emotions become more complex. Sadness being the leader in the moms head can be interpreted more as empathy and compassion while the dads anger can be interpreted as passion and drive, not just their core emotion. Just a theory but I think it makes a whole lot of sense!

@@miner00x Uh no, there are. The misconception is not that there are not positive or negative emotions, but that negativity is something to be avoided at all costs. This movie demonstrates why it's so important to ACCEPT that shitty things WILL happen, you CANNOT control it, so you need to practice handling things you don't like so when something ACTUALLY bad happens you're much better prepared to handle it. Joy thought if Riley was just full throttle happy all the time things would just work out, but just pretending your situation doesn't actually suck, doesn't change the situation. If anything, it makes it stagnate. To use a meme to illustrate, you won't ever put out the fire, if you just sit in a chair going "This is fine". Feeling bad is useful. It isn't POSITIVE to feel bad, it's bad... So it's negative. But that doesn't mean you should avoid anything that may make you feel bad. When you do that, you start trying to ban and censor everything cause anything might offend someone or make them question themselves.

Props for this movie for really understanding what Sadness is. Sadness is a social emotion. It's a communication to others that we need help. That's the theory as to why our eyes go red and puffy when we cry, to signal to others that something is wrong. Then, if you have the kind of people that care about you, they give you support.

This movie was so much fun specifically for the fanfiction community. Usually, when people write fanfic, it's about the characters from the original story, or at least new characters put in the same setting if the world is interesting enough. But so many Inside Out fanfictions were just applying the core concept of Inside Out to other stories, either original or lifted straight from other works. Like, a story that's just Avatar the Last Airbender, told entirely ftom the perspective of Zuko's emotions, for instance. It's a surprisingly versatile format.

The central emotion of each person tells everything about one's main personality trait. Joy is the lead emotion in Riley's mind, what reflects on her upbeat and happy demeanor. Her mom's lead emotion is Sadness, representing her empathic and compassive nature. Meanwhile, her dad's lead emotion is Anger to represent his more strict and stubborn behavior. Also... while Riley's emotions are all over the place and fighting for control, her parents' emotions all work together, showing how adults are more in control of their feelings, while children feel them more deeply.

I would LOVE to see more inside out, but not at the expense of the quality of the movies. As long as they have something to say, and a passion to execute it, I'm excited for it.

Just to recap. This movie saved the day with a song powered rocket made out of a wagon and brooms, made us cry while a cotton candy elephant vanished, then solved the beginning of the climax using a million fake boyfriends, a trampoline, and a guy's head lit on fire. AND IT STILL WAS ONE OF THE MOST EMOTIONAL MOVIES OF ALL TIME!!!!

I don’t know if this will be mentioned but the emotions have very specific outfits: Fear: has a red bow tie to show that we can act unkind to things we fear or don’t understand Anger: Red eyes to represent seeing red when we’re angry Joy: Blue hair to show that you need both her and Sadness Disgust: has a lovely purple ascot to show that disgust is meant to work with Fear in keeping us safe Sadness: has a white sweater, white is all the colors mixed together meaning sadness works with all the emotions sometimes.

I cannot get over how much I love this movie! By far my favorite Pixar film next to Toy Story 3, Brave, The Incredibles, Wreck It Ralph and Finding Nemo! Maybe even one of my favorite movies in general. Also regarding depression, I don't think it necessarily signifies sadness. I always found it's more complicated than that. Like sure you can feel sad when depressed but you can also just feel nothing like how Riley felt when she ran away. Like literally nothing. I've definitely had days like that.

I love this movie. It talks about grieving and how important it is. Riley was forcing herself to be happy, even though she should be processing her emotions and alowing herself to be sad to then finlly be okay. She skipped that step and everything came creshing down. Inside out is easily one of my favorite movies of all time and it always makes me cry (also it talks about growing up and the loss of being a child and that hits close home, specially as someone that has moved out a lot in life)

On a serious note, depression isn't sadness. Depression is nothingness, disinterest. Imagine joy and sadness being gone in your life and how empty that feels. Like, you know you love playing (insert game here), but when You've got time for it You're just bored. You don't want to play it bc it won't make you happy rn, and you're inexplicably sad.

Being labeled the happy one can suck at times, because then you feel the need to be happy all the time and be the smile when everyone else is sad. I’m finally getting better and not forcing myself to be happy all the time it’s still tricky to be honest with my feelings but it’s nice that I’m not expected to be happy all the time. This movie has special place in my heart and mind as great representation as to why it’s not healthy to push down your sadness and negative emotion and put a smile for the sake of others, I could have used when I was Riley’s age but getting at 19 was still a great time to have it too.

Joy basically represents Toxic Positivity. That's why Sadness is so important, she's a balance to that toxic happiness. Life needs both emotions to cope with things. I love this movie so much.

When I watch this film, I was amazed because Pixar is never stop for making everyone cry and I realized every Emotion have important thing for everyone: - Joy seeks happiness and optimistic vision - Sadness seeks empathy and compassion - Anger seeks strong desire for justice - Fear seeks safety and survival instincts - Disgust seeks comfort and rational, sometimes cyanical thinking

I'm sure you got it, but just in case: this movie is a great depiction of the difference between sadness and depression. There's a lot of focus on Sadness and its mix with other emotions, and its important functions, but depression isn't sadness. It's a void, a loss of self, a nothingness and an emptiness. Which is exactly what happens to Riley as her various islands of personality shut down and fall apart. No joy, no sadness, very little personality left.... just more and more emptiness. And sadness itself -- just being able to feel *something* again -- is what pulls her out of it.

One detail I love about this movie is how strong family island is compared to the others. The other islands crumble almost immediately once Riley starts acting contradictory, but it takes a lot to even shake the foundations of family island which I think speaks to how strong Riley's relationship with her parents are, which is also why it's the biggest island at the end

One of my favorite details in this movie is the portrayal of the emotions in Riley's clothes she wears throughout the movie. That every outfit she wears reflects the emotions in her head. Example that in the beginning when they first arrive at the new house, she's wearing a shirt that has all the emotions' colors: Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, and Purple. And then when she left the house to get pizza and to first day of school, she wore a bright yellow jacket covering her colorful t-shirt to symbolize Joy overshadowing most of the emotions, or how Riley masks her true emotions with Joy to make the people around her happy. But when Joy and Sadness disappear, she starts wearing grey and eventually black when she loses all the emotions within and can't feel anything. This movie has such an amazing story and is portrayed SO well. 💛💙♥️💚💜

This movie is soooo good cause it shows not to hold back your emotions if your feeling happy Express it, if your sad Express it or your scared Express it like let your emotions live not silenced ahhhh and I love how every other character has a more dominant aka lead emotion in charge like someone's could be anger or fear etc
