Greg took care of Steven when he was a baby because the gems didn't know how to raise a human. The gems took over when he got a little older so they could teach him how to be a gem. It's a slow gradual process because there is so much for him to learn about and be introduced to and much of it is heavy topics. That's partially why the show starts off sorta silly and slowly gets more serious. In the beginning Steven is mostly just a carefree normal kid, as the show goes on and he learns more about the gems it gets more plot focused and serious

Space Race is such a neat combination of storytelling, musical accompaniment and lore. There's a huge spoiler about the origin of the Crystal Gems in it that won't be revealed fully until the last season.

yes that's how reruns work. it's weird and sucks. it's part of why these cartoons end up having all these side adventure episodes. it's why season 1 of the owl house wasn't super plot-focused and i think part of why the show ended up being shortened when it became more plot-focused: it's harder to do reruns when the episodes are continuous. and for a "kids" show especially they want random one-off adventure episodes to rerun.

When this show was being released the episodes weren't released consistently. They were dropped in large chunks called "Steven Bombs" before taking like a 3 month Hiatus. It was really painful lol, especially in season 2, having to wait for new episodes but it did great to hype us up

As these reactors have a tendency to be quite harsh on Pearl, I was really worried about this one as her choice to try to bring Steven to space was one of her most worst decisions so far. But I really love that they were understanding and could see how Pearl was feeling, how much she was hurting- while still acknowledging that she wasn’t making the right choices 💜💜💜

House Guest might be one of my least favorite episodes in the whole series, but man y'all got a lot of discussion out of it, good stuff. Space Race is so scary but really reveals a lot about Pearl's mindset.

So, when the creator was given the green light from Cartoon Network for Steven universe, she was told they wanted just random plots, no story line but she wanted to do a whole story line so she would make random plots but have small things that connected them together which then lead Cartoon Network to getting fans wanting a full story so they ended up giving the creator the go ahead to do a continual story… hence the change from one off randomness to a cohesive plot and character development and more songs and just a better viewing vibe.

"House Guest" is Greg's worst moment, by a long shot. In my opinion it teeters on the edge of being out of character for him, and I always worry when watching reactions that it will spoil people's opinions of him, because gaslighting his son and taking advantage of the Crystal Gems is not who he is. I'm glad you guys still like him.

You have to factor in though that he just previously went through a fairly traumatic experience. He probably never feared that much for his son's life before and was absolutely helpless and could pretty much only watch.. Acting "out of character" can happen in real life after an event like this, it's realistic to lose some sense of self after for some amount of time. He overcompensated by grasping for control, as well as wanting to watch his son a lot closer and be close to him and since all of those he never really previously enforced he didn't have the right mental "tools" to do it in a healthy way

with steven universe reruns i think they did air in the same sets of 2 episodes you guys are watching, so stuff like mirror gem/ocean gem would usually air together. though with later seasons they would get less reruns because it got more serialized and would usually just air once as a multi-episode event.

The whole 'reruns' discussion makes me feel so old. Because especially back then, it was rarer to have shows that had a main story line that had back to back segments. So reruns were made to intentionally be able to be played however or whenever to fill network time. As time passed we got more and more plotted storylines, so it made reruns harder. If they did, it was purposely done to hooke you onto the show every aired weeknight. Yknow, next time on- (insert show) We all started moving toward a more bingeworthy format of story telling tho, and steven universe is one of those shows that really tested the network and I believe its another reason why it was threatened with cancelation so much on top of...well...other things. I had a roomate who had cable and when the season 2 premier happened theyd run a huge event on the channel for it with episodes in order, so viewers could catch up before the new episode premiered. And a lot more cable cartoons ive noticed have adapted this.

It was the moment my love for Pearl bloomed xD When I watched the cartoon on telly, i used to have very much different attitude toward each of Crystal Gems, but over the time the show unveiled more and more insane shit... my opinion of various gems changed just as well. And some episodes were keynodes for the whole wonderful shift of perspective.

since steven would be living with the gems to learn about gem stuff, discover how much gem magic he had, learn to control it, and all of that, maybe the gems thought he'd be a distraction? plus he'd be constantly freaking out whenever gem monsters attack the house (like first ep with the centipeetle) considering how often the gems left steven alone at first before he started going on missions, greg definitely should've been living there with him, and I feel like if he had pushed for that, like even if the gems didn't agree he could have but he probably didn't wanna cause conflict. it's an example of greg not being strict enough as a parent

It's funny... I LOATHED House Guest when it aired. With time I've grown to tolerate it. Space Race is great. Greg is legit a great dad (the best cartoon dad imo), House Guest is a slight booboo to that reputation that reminds us that even the best people have flaws.
