Honestly, I feel the movie should've had Fiona remember their argument, not just so he apologises to her, but so that she can then suggest they take a vacation while they find someone to watch the kids. Burnout is a terrible thing and there's nothing wrong with wanting to just take a small break, even from your family, just to unwind. It's understable that Shrek wanted just one day to himself, the problem wasn't that, it was getting it from a shady person and not even discussing it with Fiona.

This movie is super underrated, and a way better ending than Shrek the Third. Yes, what Shrek said to Fiona was horrible, but come on. Everyone says things they don't mean when they're that upset. This is a story about appreciating what you have. And sometimes people just don't realize what they have until it's gone. As soon as Shrek sees his daughter's toy in his pocket and cries for the first time, he realizes how wrong he was. And he faces the consequences of his actions over the rest of the movie, thus gaining a new appreciation for the life he had. He was redeemed. Also, Shrek freeing the Ogres was NOT manipulation, it was a selfless act. He realized he'd never win Fiona back, so he figured the least he could do was free her people, at the cost of never seeing her again and, when the sun rose, his life. He had no idea about the "all ogre" loophole.

Can we all please appreciate how good of a Villain Rumplestiltskin is (sorry if I spelled the name wrong)? He never outright lies to anyone, and uses vague contracts to get what he wants. Like for Shrek signing the contract, he never lies to Shrek, he outright tells him he will give him his old life back, if he removes one day of his life, but never specifies which day. So having the day he was born be removed, removes many things from the OG Timeline. 1. It removes Shrek saving Donkey, which leads to Donkey being enslaved. 2. It removes Shrek saving Fiona, and since no one came for her in time, she was a permanent ogre and was exciled. 3 (the best one). Since Shrek doesn't exist, there is no reason for the King and Queen not to sign the deed to Far Far Away, which, thanks to Shrek's absense, Rumplestiltskin now rules Far Far Away. It's such a good plan.

But he still argued that the was good, because he had fun playing it that one or two times with a group of friends, (and that fun was mostly from doing thing unrelated to the game, but that is just kind of my feeling). So you really have to pay attention to the wording the villian uses because his deals are very much like monkey paw/genie rules, where there is some twist or purposeful manipulation of the language. The deal he made with the king and queen, was for their 'problems' to disappear. Well if they no longer exist, they don't have any problems... See what he did there?
@itsthekyle88416 ай бұрын
The way I look at it, I think his wording of “all your problems will fade away” was referring to the fact in the end they were the problem. THEY locked Fiona away in the tower, and THEY chose to keep her there until someone could break her curse. Fiona is the same person both as an ogre and a person, so it’s not to protect anyone. And they easily could have hid her away at night and nobody would have batted an eye, but they made the choice to lock her in the tower despite a world of other options. The King and Queen were the cause of their own problems, thus, they were the ones to fade away, rumple has his kingdom, and he never ended Fiona’s curse because of his crafty wording. Also we have a king and queen here, they could organize a wedding for her daughter to marry a prince, and if we are to believe whatever prince saved her was her true love as Fiona claimed, then it would essentially work the same.

So just for some clarification, on why Shrek was acting a bit different could be from his own relationship with his parents. One we found out Shrek's father tired to eat him at one point. (in Shrek one i think) Also is Shrek the musical which gives us Shrek's backstory we find out his parents had him leave their house at the age of 7 so he had no true loving parents with him he has been on his own the only way to live was to be scary. IN a comic story we find out that Shrek's parents told him there was no place for any non terrifying ogre in their family. So Shrek's mentality was because he was raised to be terrifying through and through but never to be a loving father. So that's why that fact that he was not scary anyone messed with him so much.

Here's why I think Fiona didn't get saved: In the first movie Lord Farquaad sent other knights to rescue Fiona and bring her back to him. My guess is they probably all failed and he gave up and looked for another princess. And Prince Charming didn't rescue her because at the beginning of this movie Fiona's parents were losing their trust in the Fairy Godmother (who was Prince Charming's mother). In the second movie it was shown that she made a deal with Harold, she'd help them break Fiona's curse if her son became her true love.

Like they look about the same as other ones, maybe a smidge better, but whenever they move, example Fiona and Shrek sparing/romancing, it looks like it’s missing some fluidity like theres no in-between frames and just key frame 1 snapping into key frame 2. Obviously, the whole movie’s not like that, but it just feels like it’s happening more than it should in the 4th movie of a franchise like this. Either that, or I’m going nuts like the rest of them. Lol

I don't think I've ever seen Brie laugh so hard before lol. I'm a little disappointed because this was one of my favorite Shreks, 3 for me is the one that shouldn't even exist, with or without it this timeline works out, I guess except maybe the kids. But after you guys pointing out why it happens, it does kinda ruin the motivation to root for Shrek. I mean I can kinda get losing your temper and blowing up, but maybe not the specific thing that he said lol. Idk for me this one is depressing and kinda deep, just cause thinking about if you're life was ripped away is sad, but you're right he's the reason it happened lol. It was just as much as his fault as it was Rumple's. But he was more, I feel, trying to get a little refreshed and then come back ready to be a dad again, kinda get a little time to himself, like he says. He didn't realize he'd be tricked obviously.

It's interesting to think about how Shrek's journey in this movie is pretty similar to Puss' in The Last Wish! Maybe that's why it's so good, at least in my opinion. I think for a lot of people, Shrek 4 definitely helped redeem the franchise after Shrek 3. It's the most emotional Shrek movie there is in my opinion (Puss' movies are their own separate things to me). But for real, Puss and Shrek both go through their own experiences of mortality and learning to value what you have before it's all gone. And both of which have heavy focuses on earning back the love of their partners (Shrek had to prove his love to Fionna who doesn't trust him, and Puss had to earn back the love of Kitty who doesn't trust him). In the end, both Shrek and Puss realize they already had what they could ever wish for, and choose to appreciate their family and friendships over a life of solitude.

If they dislike how Shrek faces no consequences, just wait until you see 'A Christmas Carol'. (Which, by that, I mean: The consequences were shown to Shrek and he changed before any lasting damage could be done. That's literally a best case scenario for most of these stories - not every person who does something wrong has to be punished for it. If they realize they're in the wrong and change, isn't that enough?)

This movie is basically just "It's A Wonderful Life" but with Shrek. To say that Shrek meant it when he had a moment of weakness at the party, is kind of like saying Jimmy Stewart's character screaming at his family in that movie is in anyway a meaningful act and not just some impotent anger. Though I do agree that the movie shouldn't have brought Shrek back before he smashed the cake and said what he said to Fiona, it would've been interesting if the movie show him apologize to his wife.

I love how everyone in the comments is banding together to explain why the movie is better than you think. When you think about how different Shrek's life is at the start of 1 vs 4, it's understandable that he might have a bit of an identity crisis about losing his previous life as a 'real' ogre. So when pushed to breaking point at the party he does take it too far, and so the whole contract with Rumple happens as punishment for his actions. Of course Shrek didn't know the reputation of Rumple and was lured into the contract because it was the easy option for him, rather than going back to the party and apologising to Fiona & everyone else. Plus Rumple made plenty of eyeball-tinis too. It's like how the second film has Shrek take the happily-ever-after potion because he thinks it will make him accepted into society and is easier for him than attempting to make peace with Fiona and her parents. I will acknowledge there is the difference that he thinks the potion will benefit Fiona. But of course the result of the potion vs the contract are rather different, with the stakes being significantly higher in the latter's case. And I love how the climax has Shrek accept that he can't force Fiona to love him, and that he decides to give up in the hopes that Fiona and all the other ogres live a free and safe life, wishing that Fiona can have the kids she wanted. Damn, maybe I need to make a video essay on the Shrek franchise, I clearly think way too hard about these films.

This whole plot could’ve been avoided if people surrounding Shrek noticed he just needs support from his new world. Shrek only became the bad guy here because it all blew up and the lack of emotional support made him say those things, so I understand him. Fiona does best at keeping score of Shrek’s debts while enjoying being a queen of the house. This movie is a real life scenario for couples, imho. Men aren’t allowed to show emotions, as society dictates.

I really like this movie. The only thing that holds it a little back for me is the first two movies focus on how much Shrek doesn't want to be seen as a monster and wants be accepted, and now that he has all that, he doesn't like it. I think I also understand a bit of why they say he doesn't face consequences, because in the timeline that matters he doesn't, the alternate timeline might as well have been in his head because he is the only one who experiences it. Its good that he sees the error of his ways in the end, but that doesn't absolve him from his actions either. I guess it boils down to if you think he should have gotten a chance to rectify his actions or not.

I have mixed feelings about this movie, mainly because of the reason for why events unfolded the way they did. This all basically started because Shrek missed being a feared and monstrous ogre. But isn't that what he use to hate being, back in the first movie? Yeah he enjoyed scaring villagers every once in a while when they came knocking at his door, and enjoyed the solitude in his swamp. But in that same movie, he specifically told Donkey how he didn't like being hated and feared and misunderstood by others simply because he's an ogre. "They judge me before they get to know me." was the exact line he told to Donkey in the first movie, and expressed beforehand what his lifestyle was like and how he seemed to dislike it; constantly being feared and hunted, people hating him simply because they thought he was nothing more than a monster. And clearly, as we've seen, he's more than that. So I don't understand why he suddenly wants to go back to such a life. I get he wants peace and quiet, even if for a little while like a vacation or something, but he shouldn't have to be alone and hated again just to get that; especially since it conflicts with and contradicts his whole character. And it feels like my point is made even more prevalent when Shrek apparently stands by what he said to Fiona, about wanting things to go back to the way they use to be BEFORE he rescued her from the Dragon's Keep. Like, what?! He's basically wishing he had never met his wife nor had a family with her. Yeah ik, people say horrible things in the moment that they'll immediately regret. But for someone to stand firm by those horrible things said after saying them? Especially someone like Shrek with all he's been through? That's not right nor makes no sense. Sorry for the somewhat long comment. Just wanted to throw my thoughts in for some constructive discussions, or simply to air it out.
@indie_gamer78 ай бұрын
I think it's more or less how he misses when he wasn't know by everyone and didn't had to have responsibilities, we all feel like that were we think "man i wish i could go back in the day" because we think things were somehow better before, without thinking. Maybe he liked the tranquility of it all, maybe he liked just doing a little bit of trolling every once in a while (in Shrek 1 and 2 we can see him running and spooking people for fun)
@StargazerZ998 ай бұрын
@@indie_gamer7I don't think it was ever about responsibility in any way. But I get the idea of "maybe things were better in the past at some point". But to wish to go all the way back before you met your significant, let alone before having kids with them? And even telling your significant other that to their face?? That's just messed up and doesn't really fit well here, at least for this character and the previous stories told so far. And I get wanting to mess around with villagers and other people from time to time. It has been shown in 1 and 2. That part's fine. But the whole thing about being feared, hated, and misjudged is something i remember Shrek in the first movie had expressed about. It seems like the theme of the first movie was "Don't judge a book by its cover", which obviously makes sense for Shrek but also quite a few characters in the first movie.
@indie_gamer78 ай бұрын
@@StargazerZ99 I mean, he did this wish after getting angry, while in anger you say things you don't actually mean or want things you don't mean to, I had that and saw people who said similar things to people and wished them in anger, but after a while felt bad and apologized. Maybe if Shrek had taken longer to think he would l've gone back and apologize when he calmed down, but Rumpen went to him while he was in this angry state.
@StargazerZ998 ай бұрын
@@indie_gamer7 I'm aware of that and I get he was upset. And sometimes, when someone says something out of anger or whenever their emotions get high and tense, when they say something they don't mean, they don't immediately realize what they said. So it would take a bit of time for them to realize what was said, and regret it and apologize for it later. But there has to be a line drawn here for that, like an extent to how far things can be said by someone before they realize they messed up. Like, idk how Shrek didn't immediately realize how horrible what he said was and immediately regretted it then and there, and apologize to Fiona right after saying it. Idk, that's just me I guess. You are right though, if Shrek had just taken the time to think things over, I'm sure he would've gone back and apologized to Fiona after calming down, and realize how wrong he was for what he said. And yeah, Rumpel took advantage of the situation right away.
