Maybe just years of hanging around chefs - but he's become the more consistently good of the "normals".

Agreed. It's relatively easy to think of three recipes then reduce/modify them to a handful of fresh ingredients, but relatively difficult to see those ingredients and identify the planned dishes. An alternative would be to give the normals an hour of planning time. While this seems like a lot, they still have two major disadvantages over the chef. Firstly, they are cooking simultaneously and thus cannot identify which ingredients weren't used before starting other recipes. Secondly, they didn't pick the ingredients with a set of recipes in mind. Whilst this might sound less entertaining than watching them panic, it would allow Ebbers/Kush to be much more critical of the final dishes and of the process taken to get there. As viewers, we would learn not only how to cook but how to plan our cooking effectively.

And chaos ensues
@aleksandra9092 ай бұрын
I kinda like that they rarely go without any planning. Planning ahead is a skill. Chef dont rock up at work with no idea what their ingredients are. You order them in advance. Being spontaneous can be good in a kitchen (in professional kitchens thats often how staff food works and how specials often come about) but the whole idea (and a way to promote the app) is that planning ahead before you even get to the kitchen always gives better results!

Normally, I'd agree with you. However today, and maybe because it was his birthday, Ben was a bit of an arse about it. Very demanding in what the boys "should" have done, whilst following a recipe to an exact amount while talking about finding uses for the ingredients spontaneously throughout the week. It felt less like a lesson on how to make a creative dish, and more of a "I'm better, so shut up and do it my way".

It’s more like pulao when you cook the rice and chicken together. It’s biryani when you boil the rice separately, cook the chicken, and then layer them together. Sending lots of love from Pakistan! Always measure your rice with a cup and use double the amount of water with the same cup-it’s the secret to perfectly fluffy grains, whether it’s biryani or pulao. And don’t forget to cook the rice in a big pot to give them plenty of space to fluff up!🥰
@nachikethass12 ай бұрын
Not quite - some regional (Southern) variations do go without layering. You are right of course about the one-pot technique usually a Pulao, but variants like the Adyar biryani is usually mixed up in a pot before dum. One other all in one pot biryani is from the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, called either Ravuthar (Rowther) biryani or Coimbatore biriyani, though mutton (goat, actually) is the more prevalent meat. My major complaint with Ben's technique was that the pan was open!🤪
@captainace12772 ай бұрын
@@nachikethass1 While you are right, what Ben made is still a pulao simply cause it doesn't have most of the spices that make a biryani, this is more of a quick pulao which even I make when I'm lazy and it tastes great too.

Like each chef has a look at what they have in their own bag and has the opportunity to trade up to 3 ingredients, without the permission of the other chef. So if one chef is missing an ingredient, they can steal it from the other chef, or if they know what the other chef is going for, they can sabotage the recipe by stealing one critical ingredient.

Barry's absolutely right about having a vegetable curry served with a chicken biryani in the UK. Here in France you get a sloppy dish as if the veg curry has been mixed into the chicken and rice before it's served, so you don't get the nice crispy bits of rice and chicken that you do in the UK. It's also less spicy, because the French typically don't like spiced-hot food.

Honestly, it sometimes doesn’t feel “fair” that the normals go into these challenges blind and then the chefs get to go in already knowing what’s in the bag and knowing what they are cooking I’d like to see this reversed, in that the normals shop and plans and then the chef is given the same bag and needs to go in blind

I believe Josh from Mythical Kitchen would be a great guest star on Sorted. I know it would be difficult with the distance and scheduling, but i would love to see how the team would react to Josh's more "unhinged" cooking style and how well he repurposes food into a variety of meals. I think the team would learn quite a bit since they tend to stick to more "traditional" or "chefy" type meals. Also, i think it would be really interesting to see how Josh would do with Ben or Kush teaching him how to cook some high-level dish, inspired by how Josh tried recreating a difficult Japanese dish over 100 times to see if he could quickly learn in one of his videos. I don't know if this could ever be feasible, but I think all of their personalities would work together quite nicely, and that it would be quite entertaining to see how each side would react their different cooking styles.

As both teams succumbed to the draw of macaroni & cheese, maybe it's time to introduce the Sorted world to a particular/peculiar Scottish delicacy? We like our pies up here in the cold North; the Scotch pie (mutton pie) is well known. But we also have the Macaroni & cheese pie. Macaroni & cheese ensconced in a hot water crust shell, with no top. Hand held, delightful eaten hot or cold. If you want to get fancy you can top with skirlie, haggis or black pudding. But I get a plain one with my grocery deliver every Friday as my weekly treat. Would love to see the Sorted team make their own version. 🥧

Its been brought up before that this feels sort of like a "punching down" segment. It would have a different feel if it was the chef cooking with unknown quantities of unknown ingredients, to fit a certain criteria, and the normals cooking known recipes with known quantities and known ingredients.

Agreed. This has become a 20 minute ad, with 2 minute of ‘content’

I feel like it's partly because they just didn't have the chaos this time around. Normally there's a lot more bickering and shouting, but they all just agreed with each other this time. Personally I do find the Chef segment more inspiring. It's given me some good ideas on how to up-cycle leftovers that I just happened to have. Obviously it's just an elaborate pitch for the Sidekick app, but Ben does explain the mentality behind the particular packs most of the time.

100 per cent agree. Ben talks way too much and is a bit boring and a "know it all". Need longer segments of the 3 boys cooking

Willing to bet the app pays for the video to be made, though I have no access to their analytics. So perhaps the solution is to make these videos slightly longer with more of the boys entertainment and the advert-y part interspersed earlier. Dish one, dish two, dish three style

Really liked seeing dishes that only need one pan and a cutting board! And of course, happy birthday Ebbers!
