Shama's Kitchen A brief glimpse of your channel shows that your “recipes” are actually not super helpful. It seems like you only started displaying the amounts for the ingredients (a pretty important detail) like a month ago. And in one of your videos, the ingredients were literally “plain flour” and “dough.” Do you have any idea how many types of flour and dough there are? Sorry for the harsh words I’m about to say, but improving your content should be your first priority, not whining about your unpopularity on a much more popular channel.

@@SortedFood Suggestion, tiny kitchen cooking. I realize that your home kitchen isn't "tiny" most of the time, but tiny houses are still "a thing" and gaining popularity. Also, RV's are becoming popular again, for off grid or on the move lifestyles, maybe a tiny house then an RV and see what you can do?

Segment idea. Chef Vs Norm: Packet Vs Fresh. Chefs are restricted to only use packets, tins and jars. Norms must use fresh ingredients and build from scratch. Can the chefs save their shortcut meals to compare to homemade.

@Michael Crabtree, I think you missed the entire point of this video! The benefits of canned food is you get many ingredients at a prepared/ideal stage. the Norms have to be able to select, prepare and cook food properly which are all the skills that cooks/chefs already have and they mostly don't... Using a school test example, those of us who cook already have the "answers" in our heads, while amateurs still need to learn the lessons first.😅

As someone from Hawaii, I’m so happy to hear Jamie say he genuinely likes spam! It is an ingredient utilized so often here and can be cooked so many different ways! It is not meant to be eaten straight out of the can, which is why people liken it to dog food often. Slice it up, fry it in a pan with shoyu, sugar, and mirin, put it over some rice and you have an amazing easy dish!

I've been curious for years, why does Hawaiin food have tons of Japanese influence. Spam Musubi is basically a giant sushi. Lots of use of soy sauce (you even said shoyu) and teriyaki.

Spam is also popular in my home country, Korea. We often give it away as gifts, and it at times even rivals the price of fresh meat!

Hey, Sorted! That little bit at the end where Mike was saying that they need to expand their knowledge of how to effectively use tinned food... I think that should be your next cookbook. Honestly, i think its a great idea, and educating both your normals and your audience about tinned goods could be great!

As someone who believes in having a healthy amount of food storage at all times in my home, I really appreciated this video! You can't always cook with fresh ingredients and I love when chefs share great ideas with canned food. Well done!

Yes, I personally don't eat many tinned foods as I dont like sauces or soupy textures but I keep well stocked up on dried goods, variety is the key, if you have plenty of different things you can make variations on everything. Most people go wrong by buying 10 tins of 2 or 3 things rather than 2-3 tins of 10 things

Between the freezer and the pantry, we like to keep about 2 months worth of food. Not because of doomsday or anything like that, but purely the fact that you never know whats going to happen tomorrow. Is the car going to blow up? is the water heater going to split? Never know when some large unexpected expense is going to happen. if you have a good buffer of food and savings, you never really have to worry.

It sounds like one of those things that is intended to be an insult but actually comes across as a compliment 😂 Jamie is very confident and outgoing and being called a ‘character’ probably made him feel like he was being engaging and enthusiastic

That’s actually so true it’s almost sad 😂😂 he’s not picky, he’s not fussy, he gets on with it and eat’s what he’s served. I actually admire him a bit for not having a single care about the quality or level of processing his food has gone through, he just eats!

So, my uncle won't eat cranberry sauce unless it's from a can, and the rest of my family can't stand the stuff. I've taken to making my own cran jelly, and setting it inside a can haha he's been none the wiser for almost 4 years lol

that confit de canard is amazing, i have an aunt that brings me back a tin or two from france every now and then and love it. It's super tender, and has like 2 bones in it, that literally fall out when you pick it up, can cook it whole, or shred it up, oven in and use in fajita wraps. Also, i normally open the can a little, sit it in warm/hot water for a short while and it just melts the fat, so it comes out a bit easier. If you just open up the can straight away you have to try and scrape loads of fat off and its a right pain. Also i save all the fat for roasting stuff, makes potatoes amazingly!! For the price you're not only getting a fancy type of meat, slow cooked in its own fat, making it super tasty, but also cooking oil that makes stuff taste like duck!!

on a side note, i could totally understand how people think its gross and whatnot. But oof, you''d be missing out on so much holding onto the childhood "ewww gross" mentality. Try these things, worst case scenario you have a single unpleasant meal, best case, you have a new meal that will satisfy you your whole life!

Amazing tips! Also, one thing they didn't talk about in the video is that while they cost about the same, and taste about the same, the tinned version will be shelf stable, while the fresh version needs to be used quickly to prevent spoilage. That's a pretty big point in it's favor, I would think! If you aren't planning to use it right away, but want to have some on hand, just in case!

It sounds amazing. I think it's just we've been conditioned to think of things being ready to eat when they come out of a can. It's perfectly valid to have something you need to open up and stick in an oven for a few minutes.

Tinned foods can be pretty tasty! It is simply another way of preserving things. Then again, I cant really speak on this as I personally really enjoy kipper snacks aka smoked herring in a can that tends to be around 1 to 2 dollars usd.

Take a couple slices of spam, throw em in a hot skillet and brown up both sides. Toast some bread. Lettuce tomato mayo and hell yeah

I'm with Jamie on this one, I don't mind some Spam or corned beef! I grew up eating them because they were pretty affordable and convenient, and I think if you get creative, some pretty delicious dishes can be made from Spam and corned beef :D

There are some recipes from eastern Indonesia that use tinned corned beef that are amazing. It’s a legacy of WW2 ration packs from Australians as well as from the Dutch colonists. One is called ‘Brenebon’ which I had in Ambon- corned beef, kidney beans, vegetables, lots of nutmeg, good splash of sweet soy. Lovely!

I'm with Jamie on this one - Spam is amazing! Granted, I might be a little biased because I lived in Hawaii for a time where they eat a lot of it, and I never eat it just straight out of the can, but sliced thin and fried so it gets crispy?? Amazing!

We are sorted. A group of mates that will get you through the lockdown. I made Barry's brioche the other day. I'm doing a lemon version this week with things I found in the cupboard (merainges, curd, marmalade, jif) with lemon cream cheese / cream too.

@@krablord But it's not as Huffle ducks commented a "British thing" which was my point I didn't state that it was a US only thing I merely pointed out that it wasn't a British thing. However when most people state that something is a "specific nationality thing" they are usually referring to the region of origin and not just where the item is culturally significant. For example someone might say that the TV show friends is an American thing that doesn't mean that the Friends is only culturally significant in the US

i honestly really like tinned tuna, i can eat them straight out of the tin. it's also delicious on a lot of things; eg rice, pasta, sandwich 🥰

I've made tinned tuna cakes with leftover mashed potato, breadcrumbs, couple eggs to bind, seasoned, capers, onions, etc. Tastes amazing.

As someone who has made Spam Carbonara before, when I was low on fridge items with the shops closed, I have got to say it's always worth keeping tins/cans of food there for emergencies or to bulk out dishes.

Mike was as always hilarious but made a valid point at the end of wanting to do more of these, I’d like to see more of these as well. matty - I didn’t say that metric wasn’t better. I agree that it is. But regardless of whether or not a person decides to use metric or not - the roads here are still Miles per hour, the store still sells things in lbs, clothes are still measured in inches. Even if somebody in a country that uses imperial decides ‘hey, I want to just use metric’ (it is taught in school here. It’s not a matter of learning it, it’s already taught) they can’t do that bc the country overall decides for them

I really had a yes-moment when I saw the confit de canard being opened. I caught on quite fast what it was and kept chuckling all the way until the second plate was uncovered. If you let the tin warm up in some water, until the fat turns liquid, its much easier to lift out and place one a tray and finish in the oven... But for gods sake make a hole in the top of the tin as the first thing. If you forget this and then let it reach an above room temperature, you risk creating a fat geyser in your kitchen. This is NOT fun. Just for your information. It also looks soo much more appetising when the fat is liquified and transparent. Just note that the meat will be more soft, when at higher temperatures and should be handled gently, when placing on the tray. I sometimes make it by my self, when duck legs are on sale. And I always save the duck fat when I’m making anything with duck. really good for potatoes or any confit roots. But first and foremost this is a brilliant way to get fast and tender duck. Often I prepare fresh duck legs (unfrozen) sous vide with a good scoop of cold fat in the vacuums bag (it makes a better seal when you don’t have to worry about semi liquid stuff escaping). When done I chill it as fast as possible and let it stay in the bag, in the fridge, until I want to use it. High temperature in order to get the crispy skin and don’t worry about underprepared meat. It’s already done. It just need the last touch with the skin.

On top of that, get all that wonderful duck fat and roast some potatoes, vegetables, whatever in it and you'll have a wonderful dinner, just a pot to boil the potatoes and an oven and you're set for a wonderful dinner. Minimum fuss, maximum stonks for meals!

A bit late to the party, but one thing I love with tinned corned beef, is to put it in the bottom of a Pyrex dish, baked beans on top, fried/caramelised onions on top of that, mix it in with some thyme and then add a layer of cheesy mashed potato on top to almost make a corned beef pie. Sort of mixes it up if you have the ingredients for a corned beef hash but don't want a corned beef hash.

i'm a strong believer in canned fish such as sardine. i can actually spend a lot for a good quality one. My Grd mother is a collector of canned sardines. it's a big thing. one of them worth Over 100€ now

I literally live of tinned fish as my protien source, cheaper and quicker than chicken and a good source of omega 3 and usually it's got less mercury than fresh fish due to smaller fish being.

I'd actually be interested in what hacks could be done with "Cream of Mushroom" soup. I know it's practically a staple in North America for casseroles, and "one pot" dishes.

You could reduce it, add extra mushrooms, grilled chicken, rocket (think you call it arugula?) lemon zest, white wine, broccoli, peas and make a nice pasta sauce. Most mass produced stuff has a ton of stabilisers in it so it should reduce well and not split. You only need two or three of the ingredients I listed to make it nice. I miss cheffing.

I usually buy a few cans of cream of mushroom, not to use as a soup but to go with meals. sometimes I make a sauce out of it, reduce it; add stock/herbs/spices. Sometimes I'll add it to rice, very simple, turns plain rice into something a bit less boring.

I feel like mushroom soup has been "hacked" to death, at least in the US. There are lots of "fancy" ways to use it. I like adding more mushroom stock, tons of garlic sauteed mushrooms of all types, fresh herbs and serving it with toast. For our family it was mixed with shredded chicken, topped with stove top stuffing and baked! Yum!!

I think you should try surströmming like it's meant to be eaten and see if the prejudice towards it is unjustified lol. Some fresh potatoes, red onions, sour cream, chives and a little of the surströmming on top of a knäckebröd (hard flatbread) 👌🏻you're also meant to open it under water and rinse the fish 😉

Rinse the fish!? No such thing! Open it under water to prevent spray and catch some of the water soluble odors, yes, but you wouldn't rinse the fish any more than you would rinse brined crayfish.

The fact that you need all those other extra ingredients to make surstromming taste nice says a lot. I tried surstromming about 6 years ago and I still remember and fear the smell. I still remember the deadly hiss and the salt and the utterly overwhelming stench

Jamie is everyman. I grew up eating like this and still do. Tinned corned beef is a luxury item for me as I have to get the imported stuff and it is a bit expensive for my budget now. Kippers. Pickled herring. Jars of pickled pigs feet eaten with buttermilk on the side. Canned slam loo n. Pacific saury from Korea. So many good things in tins. Try a cup of milk with a nob of butter and a small can. Of oysters salt and. Pepper Heat and serve. That is an old depression recipe from when oysters were cheap. Beans tomatoes corn with the right seasoning is a great vegan meal. Go on for us Jamie. I am right with 6ou.

Ben didn't cook the sardines. Those were sardine straight out of the tin and that was why Ben was suprised. But portuguese fish tin industry (tuna and sardine) is quite diverse and popular choice to have at home! ;)

When I was in Sicily, I was recommended to try (Tinned) tuna and onion pizza. I abhor any sort of canned meat, but I tried it and it remains my favorite pizza ever. I’ve never been able to recreate it at home, sadly 😢 I should try again.

My dad makes homemade pizza from time to time (admittedly a very British version with a thick doughy crust, not proper pizza but delicious in it's own way 😂) and he often tops it with frozen prawns and tinned tuna and anchovies, it's quick and easy and if you like seafood, a really tasty combo 🙂

Mike and Jamie with the corn beef and spam is literally me an my husband a few days ago. My husband even said the thing about the sharp edges and the white stuff 🤯😅 Also, canned mackerel in tomato sauce, just like the tuna you tried, is a staple bread topping in most homes in my country 🙂 bread + butter + mackerel, and if you are fancy, + mayonnaise + lemon juice.

@@table4glasses Well, I wouldn't call tomato mackerel smørrebrød. Smørrebrød, at least how I'm used to it, is a bit more fancy (and expensive) with things like fish fillet, remoulade, caviar and decorative orange slices or cucumber slices 🙂

Hell, the rest of the UK outside of their London bubble eats tinned food like it's going out of style. It's not uncommon for Northern England to make pies out of tinned meats. Corned Beef and Potato with lashings of gravy, some mustard and steamed veggies is so damn good with a pint on the side.

Corn beef was a staple food for camping. My parents make a delicious ‘spaghetti bolognese’ with it and put it in a carrot, onion and potato mash. So it is in those two dishes that I like it, because of nostalgia.

I like tinned foods actually but since I was young the only easy-open tins I encountered were like that of Spam (like that of canned sodas/drinks) and not the one with key (the one Mike didnt know how to open). Then, once a upon a time, young me was hungry. Since I had no prior knowledge that kind of easy-open tin existed, I screwed up, almost cut myself, and resigned to using a can opener then a knife for its corners. 😂 Thus, the relief knowing somebody else doesn't know how to open it consumed me. Lol.

I’ve actually been rewatching these because I’ve been coming up with recipes and go-to’s with cans. With how hard it is to want to eat at home when takeout is so convenient for people like me who work a lot and have some health issues making it hard to use my hands for more than a few minutes at a time, cans are coming in handy. I’ve started ‘cheat’ recipes that sub in canned goods or every day ‘easy’ foods like Ramen but leveled up into a real chicken soup. I even made leftover Turkey biscuits and gravy using dried herbs and canned vegetables.

After this video, honestly I'd love to see you lads take a crack at MRE meals for a one-off. They're interesting to prepare, and they sit in a weird place as tinned or packaged food that's made to be cooked in the field, and quickly at that. Even so, they're remarkably high quality nowadays.

I come from the Pacific Northwest, which has a huge supply of fresh fish, but there are lots of things that tinned fish is just better for, like kippered herring or flakes tuna in a sandwich
