3 down k.o. is way too earlier rule. It was when ippo was in rookie tournament. After ippo defeated mashiba all the matches he had doesn't matter how many times he falls. If he can get up it's safe.

@@grayjay6943 That's not true, the 3 knockdown rule was used in Japan until 2012 or 2013. It's even mentioned in the episode (and show in the video cut of the reaction) that if Ippo was knocked again he would have lost the match. 12:19

I love Ippo's quest to find out what it means to be strong. It's obvious to the audience how strong Ippo is at this point, he's built like a house and all of his opponents talk about the power behind his punches, but to Ippo "strong" isn't a physical trait. If it was a physical trait, Ippo was already strong from at the being of the story (he already had a great physical build from working in the fishing business). Strong to Ippo is this abstract mix of everything he admires in all of his other opponents that he still doesn't see in himself. It amazes me how the author was able to draw so much depth out of a simple concept

And for a great in universe reason for it, too. His father was one of the strongest fisherman out there, both physically and emotionally. He had a big heart and risked his life to save others. And it even cost him. And yet, somehow, Ippo heard his voice one night, and swam out to find his father's cap floating out there. That is the kind of strength Ippo wants. And it's a strength that you can never really believe you have yet, because whatever level you reach, the persona feels even better upon comparison.

By the way, about Ippo traumatizing people: I believe they say in the manga that Ozuma doesn't box anymore due to injuries after fighting Ippo

Ozuma's spine suffered, so he had to quit boxing. Hayami's jaw, which is spoken about later, has become glass from Ippo's fight with him. But at the same time, people like Mashiba and Sendo found themselves more after fighting Ippo. Mashiba started down a better path because he saw how much Ippo sacrificed as well to win. Sendo found a true rival. Ippo's fights can keep people from ever fighting again. But for those who can take them, it drives them to be further. Something we also see later in Kobayashi.

Kugi punch / Sappo / Hammer driving punch = Moving aside or piercing the muscles with repeat strikes to rupture the organs beneath. A personal favorite and appears in some fighting anime.

Also funny how much they're underestimating Sendo. Ippo actually gets more injured from this fight due to head trauma (as usual), while Sendo's fine after his ribs heal in a couple months. It's also implied throughout the later manga chapters that, with the exception of Volg, Sendo could low-difficulty beat down all the opponents Ippo had a lot of trouble with (or would have had trouble with if he actually fought them, Miyata).

What I want to know is what precedent did the show set that led them to believe "oh, sendo's straight up going to die"? Because death in the ring isn't something they've ever even approached, this doesn't feel like "that" kind of story, yknow?

Sendo's whole story doesn't fit. He's supposed to be this guy who fights to protect everybody just like his dad, a fire fighter. But then in episodes like these they never mention anything about his dad being a fire fighter or wanting to be like his dad at all. All he wants is to see who the strongest is. While story keeps conflicting with each other

For me ippo is the most underdog boxer here yes his the main character but his the super supa underdog,. Volg trained when his a still a kid also miyata, but ippo trained because he wants to be trong at late age for old boxers 17 or 19 is a bit late when it comes to boxing

In the manga a couple of fights have gone to points. In the anime i can remember volg/sendo going to points and a miyata fight somewhere as well. Its just that their not as memorable.

Aoki and Kimura get fights that end in points, especially Kimura due to being an outboxer that specializes on staying away. Unlike Miyata, who is an outboxer that specializes in the counter. Volg vs Sendo went to points, it just had been an extremely brutal fight. But most fights end in KO's because Ippo is a specialist swarmer who can become a slugger. He wins matches by hitting fast and hitting hard. Takamura wins the same way. As does Sendo and even Volg. Point wins show off a person's skill, but KO's make the money and reputation. You have to fight and win for a long time for point wins to become reputable. Like Kobayashi's idol, a Champion who had 90 matches or something and yet only a few KO's. So very few boxers actually go for point wins if they can help it.

Hm, didn't like that fight the first time and now I don't like it for the second time. The first season of ippo had a lot of cool episodes I forgot, but this isn't one of them. Season 2 is still so much better in my memory and season 3 wasn't far behind. I am so excited when they get to my favorite fight in season 2. No other fight compares to that one.
