The way Takumi talks in such a subtly manipulative manner is so so dangerous. I definitely would've fallen for him when I was younger, trying to be 'not like other girls' and the one that can change him

I'm so glad you guys are seeing Nobu's flaws because sometimes fans see him through rose-tinted glasses. Don't get me wrong I love Nobu and hate when on the opposite some try to imply he's as bad as Takumi (yes such people exist), but the general consensus I see is that people view Nobu as this can't-do wrong character. The flaws and complexities of these characters is what makes NANA such a special series

When I was a teenager, I read Nana and saw Nobu as a do-no-wrong character. It's crazy how much my perspective on him changed when I watched the show, after I had adulted for a while. The characterization in this series is so good.

I mean that is exactly why Nobu's character is one of my favorites. He is purposely portrayed as that sun character, that is a good friend who is good to everybody and who had such a good family life but at the end of the day no one is perfect. But are his mistakes that grave for me? I don't think so because a big part of his character is to reflect on his actions and to grow up. Every wrong step he makes he tries to be better, hence why he could never be the same as Takumi. And we can already see it in this episode, did he say some immature, ignorant things? Well yes, but immediately after being called out, you can see that he thinks about what was said to him and he doesn't just try to defend what he does. His "idealization" of woman is alway brought up to talk down his character but it's not like it is his character attribute, it is one flaw he had at one point of the story. I guess what I wanted to say is, yes of course he is not perfect, but I can see why people see him as that good guy, since his good sides are way more present

@@ismetsari987 Agreed. And in the manga he learns from his previous relationship to have an another one with Yuri. They have their own flaws (I will not spoil it) but still Nobu is able to learn and to change. Like any characters in the manga or any other Yazawa's titles. Which is why I love her stories x3

@@Miki_peach Oh I wasnt logged in so I sadly didn't see your comment.. because it's actually an interesting topic. Well I have read the manga so no spoilers for me, unless the hiatus suddenly stopped (I wish). I know exactly what you mean and I think it's weird people always claim that "Nobu was only good in the anime". To be honest I was annoyed by his rl with Asami for a long time until I took a second recently to think about the question why she was introduced and what you said makes perfectly sense. She is obviously a very complex female character who deals with still very current moral questions, aka corn and how a man can find it in himself to maintain a relationship with a person who works in that kind of job. In that sense Nobu showed a lot of understanding which contradicted what he previously thought about people so it was interesting to see him communicating with her and understanding her. He messed up in the latest chapters so it's a shame that is the last we have seen of him. And yes obviously, her characters are very realistic and complex. More so in contrast to other animes. And I think Asami is very overlooked, I wouldn't even say she is innocent in this, since I don't really think she actually loves Nobu and how she seduced him was kind of weird haha

Man Shin is just so good. Rarely does a guy his age understand the complexities of women and doesn't put them on a pedestal but it''s so sad to realise the implications of how he reached this conclusion

And the sad thing is he ends up involved in a toxic, very sketchy, barely legal relationship with Reira. He's very understanding of many things but he's still a young teen who doesn't know what to do when he's in love. It breaks my heart.

Everytime I watch this with you guys I'm just like damn, this show is so good. None of these modern anime have this kind of depth for me. Nana calling Yasu after that emotional devastation... They have an intimacy that Nana doesn't have with Ren, I mean she and Ren have open conversations, but it seems like that part of herself that she holds back with Ren she readily shares with Yasu. And Yasu will drop everything and come running for Nana, and I like that he half jokingly said oh I wish you would leave the nest already, no woman is gonna take me seriously if I'm always dropping her for you (cuz I will) haha. Just like he dropped "Oh I'm leaving the band to seriously be a lawyer" for her. I think I liked Nobu's "confession" here more than you did, I didn't see it so much as high school or juvenile. You guys understood that sometimes those simple words or phrases are so loaded with emotion that they get the point across very strongly. Yasu already has the perfect words that would surely work on Nana "Come with me." and right now he is almost in parallel with Nana as Nobu is to Hachi. So I think those simple words were very remarkable and delivered his message clearly that he knows what's going on, and while he's no match right now he will take her from Takumi. As far as Takumi is concerned, I think there was some truth hidden between the manipulation - maybe he does think for a second he wants someone that really understands him and his lifestyle. He definitely didn't come over with good intentions but I think for how naive Hachi is her charm may actually be working on him a bit here insofar as he's now second guessing his bullshit.

Something I didn't notice as much the first time I watched is how much Nana O has abandonment issues, not to get all Freudian in here, but seeing her talk about Trapnest taking everyone away reminds me of her home life, and I think that's why she can't be as open with Ren as she was before, there's always the lingering feeling of "what if he goes away again? do I want to go through that all over again?"
@ismetsari987

I think Nobus confession can be seen as immature or not well handled if you are still watching blind. At the end of the day his confession didn't really do any harm to Hachi, rather it had just the right effect on her and led to whatever we see in the next episodes. I think it's also not pretty clear right now that Hachi also started falling for him after their previous conversation, which is exactly the reason she lets go of Takumi pretty quickly.

@@blipe992 I think except for Nobu, Ren is the first person she opened up so much. And of course your romantic partner is gonna be different than your best friend. Ren doesn't just remind her of her home life I think, rather he was her home wasn't he? The place they lived together was the first thing she saw as a home, maybe ever I don't remember how she feels about her grandmothers place, and that is also why Ren leaving took such a huge toll on their relationship.

Ooooh I just love the way you both think and deduct all of what may or may not happen 😍 And yeah, it’s absolutely wild how casual Shin and Reira‘s „transaction“ is thrown into the mix for about 3 seconds 😂 Precious Shin deserves soooo much more screen time! Also I think the thing about Takumi is… in many ways I think he speaks his truth and he probably doesn’t want to be a manipulative asshole and wants to have healthy relationships. Nonetheless the result is still a bit manipulative. In a way. Unintentionally and due to circumstances. But still. Also, how much „manipulation“ is just normal, human, unconscious behaviour and at which point does it get intentional and problematic? Aaaaaaah, this show is just pure complex character/relationship deliciousness 🤤 thanks for your splendid commentary, as always ❤

People just manipulating each other on a daily basis is something I thought about a few times before. There are a lot of people who just sees manipulation inherently as something vile and evil, but we manipulate eachother all the time in harmless and less impactful ways. Like asking your roomate to give you a ride to a friend's hose, and you invite your roomate's crush to manipulate your roomate into wanting to give you a ride. Yeah that's manipulation, but it's a harmless manipulation where everyone got something at the end. With that said, yeah there are different types and degrees of manipulation, some less acceptable than others. I'm not here talking about if what Takumi did was wrong or not, I just wanted to talk about this topic since I've thought about it quite a bit before, manipulation isn't inherently vile.

Guys there's also the possibility of Takumi just lying. Saying things that would make Nana sympathise. Takumi has been shown to be a scummy person. You can't take his words as truth especially the ones he says to Nana.

These reactions give me so much more insight, in terms of anime Nana is really one of the best I have seen. Love to see that they finally are aware of the Nobu and Hachi dynamic lol and I really felt the same way like Jacob at that point in the story Love their thoughts about Ren and Nana's dynamic. They are always referred to as that toxic couple but watching the show with you again, I just can see how they could work, if they just tried to work on their relationship together. It doesn't always work but their love for each other could be strong enough for it.
