The segment of the thug's story is actually pretty deep for a supposed throwaway character. He is the representation of the downtrodden living in a cold, uncaring society. The guy lie, cheat, and steal because that is all he can do. That you have to look out for number one, because no one else will care. Even as he lay dying, all the onlookers doesn't even care, as if they are looking at some roadkill. Yet, a small child whom he have taken advantage of so many time come to his side and shed genuine tears over him. It was then he looked back at the times the child hold his hand and realized these are genuine affection and not some transactional relationship. He may have thought then that this is the first time anyone has cared about him, and shed a single tear. This show does not play. Like God damn.

Domas has the same mindset of a lot of bad teachers where, instead of having the kid solve a problem in their own way, they force them to do it the "right" way, even when clearly it is not working. Even if you are the best at what you do, it doesn't automatically make you a good teacher of that subject.

no matter what I still shed a tear when Kage says " you looked so cool" and "I want to be in your corner from now on" Bojji is the light to Kage as he thought about his mom linking them together. Kage thought his mom was cool , the same with Bojji. So seeing Bojji getting beat up, he wanted to stop it cause it correlated to his mom's death. Bojji for once in his life has someone on his side
@Mossy_Dahlia2 жыл бұрын
A really interesting bit of symbolism is Kage leaving the toy horse to steal the tomato, symbolizing him leaving his innocence and childhood behind for a life of crime and survival. Then him flipping the coin to get Bojji's attention in the end, him leaving his thieving ways behind to support his newfound friend.

One thing people can miss in the anime is how the man who "adopted" Kage was the one having the flashback moment. In his final moments as those around him looked down at him with empty uncaring eyes he remembered those small moments with Kage and realised what he had done. Too late of course but had he survived there is no doubt he would have been a changed man. How changed is debateable but at the very least he would have treasured Kage as he should have.

It's important to note that the way people see kings in ranking of kings is completely different than how kings are seen in real world midieval times. In this world, the king is supposed to be the hero. He's supposed to be the strong guy that can go in and fight off threats. That's why they mention in the very beginning that the most important criteria in the ranking of kings is the strength of "the king himself as a hero".
@minsungseungmin2 жыл бұрын
This episode is the hardest for me to watch. When that little girl covers for Kage's screams of pain and loss, I mean, she's brilliant, and she and her guardian did save his life. But that second when she stops her fake crying, and you catch a moment of Kage's real cries of pain... THAT moment hurts. And when he gives up his most loved possession, the last thing his dead mother gave him, when their life was normal, for a bit of food, just to have it smashed... It's SO painful. I know he's a Shadow, but, he's obviously starving, just as a human would, and he's just lost EVERYTHING, and he gives up his ONE thing to get a morsel to eat, even though they all treat him like garbage, and then that bit of food gets taken from him. I mean, I feel terrible for Bojji, too, but what Kage went through, it really hurts my heart.

Cowardly swordmanship is basically all swordsmanship. No one wants to get stabbed. Dying kills people. Its just sad that people can so easily buy into idea's over reality. Things like idiots using daggers to be super fast and armor being so heavy you shouldn't even wear it at all.
@Kingdo_RGT2 жыл бұрын
It's just that, contrary as everyone like to think, appearances matter. Of course a fighting skill based on dodging is a valid one, but since he doesn't have strength to lend a blow, he looks like he's making fun of his opponent. That apply to basically everything. That why you need to look good when you search for a job, because even if you are really skilled in your expertises, if your look isn't professional, people just assumed you are not competent, while there is absolutely no link between look and skill in many jobs.
@soultaker0672 жыл бұрын
In this kingdom because of their king they’re used to a more offensive/aggressive combat style. Maybe if it was a random kid they wouldn’t mind that much or at all, but Bojji is the first son of King Bosse.
@Merilirem2 жыл бұрын
@@Kingdo_RGT True because those people are idiots and the world is full of them. If you ever get put in charge of raising a person be careful not to raise them into such a fool. You have to live with reality and dress up to such peoples expectations but never forget how stupid it is that you do.
@Merilirem2 жыл бұрын
@@soultaker067 Yes, and its dumb. That was the point of my comment after all. The idea that a "Kings Swordsmanship" is to overpower the opponent with brute force is macho bullshit that has unfortunately taken root in this kingdom thanks to Bosse pulling it off. Even if Boji couldn't beat Daida under those rules it should have shown Daida's weakness but everyone ignores that in favor of his strengths because they approve of that type of strength.

ROK is an actual masterpiece. The characters are so multi-layered, and despite it's almost sickly levels of sweetness at times, it never pulls it's punches when it comes to darkness. It's quite reminiscent of a classic fairy-tale, but if you know anything about classic fairy-tales they often get *very* dark. It's probably the first anime to land a top spot on my personal rankings within the first 2 episodes, and I wasn't certain it was gonna hold up that level of quality for the entire show... But somehow it just got better and better. Also very happy to see SOS crying at episode 2. We're in for one hell of a journey, this won't be the last time.

I think this is the episode that kinda decides whether someone will like the show or not. If you empathize with Kage and Boji here, you're in for an emotional ride, if you feel emotionally manipulated and like it's just "oh another sob story to ellicit an emotional response from us", everything is gonna fall flat from here on out. Without knowing anything about this, from the moment Bojji first evaded Daida's attack, I knew he had a way to fight that was relevant to his weakness (and strength!). And then in this episode they said it's not the way to fight for a king, which is such bs. If the opponent never hits you, and you have an appropriate weapon, one strike is all it takes to win a battle.
