Not quite included in the dub, but Toguro essentially went to 120% power at the end. Yusuke pushed him literally beyond his limit
@affable86962 жыл бұрын
It's one of the rare occurences where the dub kinda undermined what the original tried to convey. Calling it 85% (no matter the justifications people bring up like it being a bluff) instead of 120% (or simply beyond 100%) cheapens the transformation, imo.
@jessebrown19962 жыл бұрын
@@affable8696 Well you can't actually go 120% that's a illogical, and from an actual Japanese speakers point of view it's more a long the lines of he was using 100% of 100% and not 120%.

@affable86962 жыл бұрын
@@jessebrown1996 I think the problem lies in you taking this from a logical/literal standpoint. "Going past one's limits" is one of the main principles of shonen battle manga, especially when the characters have special energy and transformations. Toguro used 100% against Yusuke, and when he finally met his match, he managed to go a little bit past that. We both know that is impossible in real life, but majority of shonen is literally built on defying this, most often via a new transformation (super saiyan forms being the most prominent example). We could say that by attaining this "new" form, it became Toguro's new 100%, but I don't feel like that's the point you were trying to make. Plus I feel like it's semantics anyway, as it would still be 120% (or 100% of 100%) of his old form. And this is not even considering the whole spirit/demon energy stacked on top of the life energy or the energy lent to you by other characters.
@sharksfan2322 жыл бұрын
You know, the "What I said was 100 was actually 85" was a really weird mistranslation. That final form of Toguro was described as "100% OF 100%" in the manga, and I like that description more than just saying "I was just playing you earlier, this is 100." That is just my taste.

In the manga, it's 100% of 100%, which he later equates to 120%. Like how people can push themselves to 100% of their strength, but then push beyond it on an adrenaline rush to do things like pick up cars or pianos.
@TheKyrix822 жыл бұрын
And the dubbers rightly decided that was stupid, and made it what it actually was.
@devonm0426902 жыл бұрын
@@TheKyrix82 The problem with that line of thinking is that absolute 100% is not sustainable. The muscles would tear themselves apart and the bones would break under the strain of performing feats allowed by absolute 100%, if it was more than just a burst of strength in emergencies. It's why normally there are limiters enforced through body chemistry, making the normal maximum around 80% of the absolute maximum. Beyond that, a big problem with calling 100% Toguro 'more like 85' is that it makes 80% Toguro more like 65%. Likewise, it backscales every other announced tier Toguro has stated to be using, so Toguro initially fought Yusuke and Kazuma with around 15% instead of 20%, and when showing off to scare Yusuke into participating he used around 50% instead of 60%, and what he told that 'Spirit Warrior' was an honoring of his strength by using 45%, was actually around 30%. No, Toguro started his fight with Yusuke at 80%, then bumped up to 100%, and then when told by Yusuke to give it everything, he assumed a 'limit breaker' form. The fact that pushing himself in that form quickly killed him is proof enough of that. It's like the Gate of Death from Naruto in terms of aftereffect, but more like the Gate of Opening in terms of benefit. Or to go with something closer to the airing time, it'd be like if against Vegeta, Goku using Kaiokenx3 was his equal. He'd be pushing his body too far, and then have to try to grapple with a then-equal opponent on top of that.
@TheKyrix822 жыл бұрын
@@devonm042690 Except again, it falls apart, because unlike those other examples, Toguro wasn't shown to be putting any real effort into anything. The Japanese is akin to the Goku/Frieza fight being: Oh, you're at 75%, well, I'm only at 50%. Here, let me go to 100%. Oh no, you're a Super Saiyan, time to go to 120%! In reality, Goku was at 50%, Frieza was at 1%, went to 50% to show Goku how fucked he was, then went to 100% when pushed...at which point he overtaxed himself, because he had never had to go 100% before. Toguro is literally in that same boat. Which is why the dub is much better. Otherwise we get "One For All, ONE MILLION PERCENT!" all over again.
@MajorLawliet2 жыл бұрын
@@TheKyrix82 it is stupid to think it is stupid. This is still an anime, a piece of literature, not reality. Someone literally pushing beyond their limits carries a lot of literary meaning when used well. I don't see you calling explosions of blue energy stupid, why the double standards? Why is spirit energy okay but not pushing so hard you literally wield more power than your body can normally produce?
@TheKyrix822 жыл бұрын
@@MajorLawliet Because, by definition, the most power you can physically put out IS 100%. That is definitionally a fact. To go to DBZ style powerlevels, if Toguro stated his 100% was, say, 50,000 and later jumped to 60,000, he's not at 120% now, he's at 100%, he just lied about what his 100% was. Now in DBZ, the Kaio Ken actively does add power, but that is a technique, and it does more damage than your opponent is likely to. Toguro didn't use a special power technique, he just used the rest of his power. At best, you could argue it's a Frieza situation, where it's a different form with a different powerlevel, but again, it's still 100%.
