Including the time it took to buy the ferry tickets, the boat took longer than expected. Nevertheless, we finally arrived in Kazakhstan. The port is an hour's drive from Aktau, our short term destination. We need to take out cash, buy a SIM card and then figure out our next move.
We have a couple different options for transportation. Kazakhstan is so big that travel is either long or expensive. Will we take a 30 hour train ride to save some money or will we buy a flight to save some time?

Well, you are taking the road less travelled. That's hugely impressive, especially as like me you don't have Russian. Also when darkness falls, everything seems different. You did brilliantly. Taxi drivers can be a pain. I had 10 around me when I arrived solo in Lahore, one changed his price after we agreed and I just got out of the car and removed my luggage, starting all over again. I chose the quiet driver at the back of the pack and the cost was really cheap. Those skills to cope when things are intense are invaluable. What I do know is you will always remember this part of your travels. I appreciate your dilemma. I have enjoyed long overnight train journeys in the Stans but you need the time and Uzbekistan is amazing! Been twice, I am so lucky. Thanks for great content. You are both brilliant!

We have the same thought process as you when deciding who to get a ride from. Wait for the pushy drivers to leave and then find the nice quiet one. Russian would be extraordinarily helpful in these parts but we managed to get by with the amount of people who spoke English. We wish we had more time in the Stans. Central Asia is very high on our list of places we need to return to. We barely scratched the surface!

I lived and worked in Kazakhstan for three years. About cabs...ANYONE can make their car into a cab. To find one, just stand beside the road and raise your hand. There is also an app to call for a cab, like Uber. The drivers will quote a price on there and you just choose one. As for groups of drivers, one might quote 6000 tenge but ask for a lower price and they start bargaining amongst themselves. Walk away and finally one will catch up to you and THEN quote you a reasonable price. They use any foreigner as their ATM...if you let them. Keep in mind they make VERY little money but remain pretty nice people. I've even had beggars offer ME money after chatting together for a while. I still have several Kazakh folks on my Facebook from my time there, all really sweet people!

We slowly figured out how the taxi system works in these parts. Fascinating and very convenient but difficult if you are unaware of how things work. We laughed later about our first driver way over charging us but taking us all over town to get the things we needed. We need to go back and give Central Asia the time and attention it deserves!

@@SOSASATSUNRISE It's quite a different system but works for them. I really did enjoy my time there as the people are very special. Do keep the clips coming...and stay safe!!!

Just came back from trip to Aktau and Astana. Taxi drivers were good with gas pedal and looking out speed radars. Everyone was very friendly and we didn't have any problems. Taxi price was maximum of 6€ / 30min and that was from airport to city. Found sim-cards also easily for 8gb about 3.5€ Kazakhstan was really good place to visit and have to go back someday!

You're right when you say it was one of the most interesting areas. We are glad we spent what little time we had there. Unfortunately, getting on the boat to Kazakhstan took more time than expected and we already had plans in another country to attend a celebration. We will be back to central Asia eventually!

Greetings, Amber & Nathan. I recently left a comment on this vlog regarding a suggestion to visit Pakistan but you didn't respond to that comment. Did you read it?
@SOSASATSUNRISE
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
Yes, we did read it. It must have gotten lost in the mix. 😬 We would love to visit Pakistan and the other Middle Eastern countries. We did not spend nearly enough time in this part of the world and we wish to go back.

What's a doner? Also on days like these do you guys just plan as you go?
@SOSASATSUNRISE
@SOSASATSUNRISE Жыл бұрын
A doner is like a wrap sandwich. Very common in Europe/Middle East. Most of the time we are booked about 2-3 weeks ahead of time but since we werent sure when we were going to get on and off the cargo ship, Central Asia was different. We only booked things for the next day. Not having a plan is not our favorite way to travel but this was fun!

Peace be upon you, Amber & Nathan. New subscriber here. I have to tell you this: You must visit Pakistan 🇵🇰. I mean it! Pakistan really has the potential to become the number 1 tourist destination in the world! The unmatchable hospitality of the country & the wondrous landscapes of the Northern mountain 🗻 areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Skardu, Swat Valley, Hunza Valley, Chitral, Kagan Naran etc await you! Just Google these areas & travel vlogs of these Pakistani Northern 🗻 areas in particular & see for yourself. The Pakistani cities of Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Multan etc have a lot of culture & history tourism to offer too. The country has a lot to offer to tourists in terms of delicious food, positive aspects of culture, history. It's one of the top destinations for adventure tourism. And you're in Kazakhstan right now which is near to Pakistan. Also, your trip to Pakistan will be really economical and you'll have a really high chance of getting a lot of new viewers & subscribers. Many KZbin travel content creators have visited Pakistan & travel vlogged from here and their subscriber count has reached in 6 digits because of that (or even more!)
