It has nothing to do with laziness or cashgrabbing, and everything to do with the small budget, because the publisher didn't believe in the IP after Soulcalibur 5 flopped. The fact that Soulcalibur 6 even happened is a miracle, and the developers have done an amazing job with what little they've been given.

Shad, I respect you as a person, I really do, especially since you at least consider yourself someone who always opts for truth, so in that light, I kindly ask you. What the HELL have you been smoking before making this video. How in the world can you praise SC5 in the same breath you throw mud over 6? Most if not all of the gripes you had with 6 are present in 5. Reused assets? Witheld content as early DLC? Well that was in both 4 and 5 allready. Please, for the love of all that is holy, if you consider yourself a fan of the series, do some research before making a vid on it. After the trainwreck that was Soul Calibur 5 it took something close to corporate infighting to even get Soul Calibur 6 released at all. As for Necrid, I do hope you realise the rights to the character are in the hand of it's creator, who is no longer working on the Soul Calibur series, so there's really not much anyone at Bamco or the team can do legally. Side note, yes, Chronicles of the Sword was great, wish it was back, don't think it will though.

While I also share shads critizism, this is really the reason for all this. The developer had to work with such a low budget because the publisher didn't believe in it. It had to be successful otherwise this would be the end of the series. And with this in mind, I think the developers did a remarkable job if you look at the gameplay itself. Yes there are cashgrab dlcs, but think of them as an investment for a new better funded sequel. If you love SC and you want the series to live on, buy it. Else it's dead forever. At least that's how i see it. You can hate the publisher, but the developers? They did a great job for the circumstances they had to work with.

@@mikethegringo8227 I would like to know that as well. I mean the fact that the game had multiple dlc seasons speaks for itself and i thought i read positive things in an interview with the developer somewhere. I really hope there will be another game. SC 6 in my opinion had the best gameplay in the hole series, the characters felt really different and distinct with unique mechanics and i even liked the counter system which alot of people critisize. I was really disappointed by the single player modes as shad showed. If they could build sc7 on this foundation and with great single player content as sc2 and 3 had it would be a really great game. Maybe some would disagree with me because a lot of players like the series for its create a soul mode and i care about that the least. Gameplay is what gets me hooked in the long run.

1. Necrid was guest characte designed by Todd McFarland; not owned by Bamco, and likely, not coming back due to licensing reasons. 2. Gameplay wise; Soul Calibur 6 is pretty significant change from 5 and it does have things that I absolutely love. While character creation being a copy and past of assest from 4 and 5 is annoying and while I do hate that we have to pay for older characters, the work they've done on those characters to change them up is significant. Amy in Soul Calibur 3 and 4 was basically just female Raphael, now she has mechnics and techniques that complete set her apart from Raphael as a character. Cassandra often felt like the Ken to Sophitia's Ryu, and feels entirely different despite using the same weapon. I will conceed and agree that the monitization scheme is shitty, it's a problem that I think needs to be adressed with fighting games and gaming as a whole and not sat squarely on the shoulders of a single title, especially since SC6 isn't the worse case I've seen of it. 3. I agree that the story mode should be more fleshed out and have a lot more to it. It's more than we get in 5, but that's no excuse when games like the Last 3 Mortal Kombats, Injustice and hell, even Street Fighter 5 (which has animated cut-scenes in the main story mode) exist. Even Tekken 7 and Dragonball FighterZ got a better treatment in this department. However, I don't consider Soul Calibur a lazy endeavor, considering the last 2 games were made on a smaller budget compared to Bamco's flagship fighting game series, Tekken. This has a dramatic affect on the series as Bamco refuses to allocate more money to the series even though it has a healthy fanbase that is always clammering for more.

I have to say I find this review rather shallow and unfair to the game. It even includes some misinformation. Lets adress single player content first, which seemed to be your main grievance. I myself wasn't blown away with the single player offerings. The soul chronicles are pretty standard fair as you said, read dialogue, go fight dude, and repeat. However you claimed they don't feature voice over is completely false, both the main and character soul chronicles are fully voiced with the main chronicle even featuring some cutscenes. As someone invested in the series I also think the chronicles did a good job (re)telling the stories of the characters. Despite your focus on single player content you also completely failed to mention the Libra of Soul gamemode, which has you create your own character (but with limited customization unfortunately), and play through another (at least partially) voiced campaign with a world map. Where you even get do side quests and optional boss fights and upgrade gear and interact with the main roster, something you said you wanted in this game, but for some reason completely failed to mention in this review. Then there's the issue of mechaincs. I think it's safe to say that you approached this review from a casual's perspective, which is fine. However it comes off as dishonest to say the devs just shoveled out more of the same for a lazy cash grab of a game while ignoring the massive mechanical overall the actual FIGHTING SYSTEM in a VS. FIGHTING GAME recieved. This game introduced several major new mechanics on a system wide level, and character specific level. Lethal hits, soul charge, soul attack, reversal edge, the changes to guard impact. These mechanics greately affect the gameplay compared to it's predecessors, whether for better or worse is up to you, but you don't even give them any mention. You also make no mention of the new individual mechanics that many of the roster recieved which change and evolve how the returning roster plays compared to previouis incarnations. Especially the returning DLC characters who all recieved substantial mechanical changes, a case of "witheld" or recycled content. To further address the roster, no, not every entry in the series has only added characters while retaining the whole roster from the previous game, that's just false. Fighting games in general don't due this, with the execption being from sprite based games where the same engine was used for each entry (such as the BlueBlue or GGX through GGXX series) Zasalamel was no where to be seen in SCV, and dampierre returned as DLC in SCV after his debut in broken destiny. Also Necrid hasn't playable outside SCII due to copyright, Bamco doesn't fully own the character. I'll agree, some of the DLC practices were wack, such as Tira being day one DLC. Day one DLC characters as pre-order bonuses or otherwise is one of the things I hate the most in modern fighting games, no defense there. I also can't speak to how much effort it is to port over the CAS pieces from previous games to this engine, but either way I also found the CAS part variety lacking at launch, and a lot of the additions underwhelming, recycled or otherwise. Project Soul absolutely could've done better there. Lastly the devs provided 2 years of not only DLC, but free content, including free CAS pieces, free stages, and several substantial balance updates, including adding new moves and mechanics to the whole roster while also supporting the E-Sports scene (til covid came along and ruined that.) It's also no secret that this game didn't have the largest budget after SCV, plus let's not forget that fighting games are a niche genre. Soulcalibur VI is not perfect, and there's plenty to criticize. It's even guilty of some mordern AAA greed, however I'd say it's quite far from a "Soulless cashgrab," and this review is far from thorough and fair. To anyone who actually read all this, thanks for listening to my TED talk I guess.

Says it's a "Lazy, Souless, Cash grab". Yet doesn't touch on the overall mechanics and how they've improved so vastly in a few years from Soulcalibur V, completely misses the fact that Libra of Souls exists WHICH HAS YOUR OWN CHARACTER INTERACTING AS ONE OF THE MAIN CAST, and has those aspects of Chronicles of the Sword that everyone loves. (Nothing will touch that though, ever). That right there, and such a huge single player thing that was omitted, that would extend your single player content by 8 hours or so. And was updated just as much as the main story line. SCVI has had more content updates, balance patches, and support than any previous entry, and was so popular and handled well that there was going to be the very first actual World Tour for SC because of how well it did sales wise, and overall support wise by the community. And for the ending about Necrid, Talim not only canonically purified him so he doesn't exist anymore, is also a "Guest character" from Todd McFarlane. So there'd be massive issues in general, considering we already had 2 other guest characters in 2B and Haohmaru, as well as Todd is very very protective over his characters/creations in general, and the biggest thing omitted is the fact that SCVI was on a budget seemingly less than half of SCV. How can you praise Injustice, when it followed nearly the same formula as this game and had a triple A studio running it? You do some great reviews, but this one missed the mark immensely and the irony here is you insulted it for being this rushed, soulless thing, but all you had to do was take one extra hour and do some proper research and you'd see there's a lot more to it than you're saying. The worst fact is because you rushed this review and so many have already seen it, you've taken an already niche game/title and spat on it and made it so many new Souls don't want to even give it a shot, SCVI isn't without it's issues like any game is now, but the fact there's so many good things you overlooked for the sake of "getting a video out" just isn't right.
@marlonmontelhiggins8570

One minor gripe that I have with this comment: SCVI takes place before the events of SCI, and Necrid was a character in, and his purification by Talim happened in the events of, SCII, so to state that, owing to that, Necrid wouldn't fit here would be silly. And, let's not forget that Talim is in this game, despite her canonical age around the time in which SCVI takes place being 11. Gripe aside, I do understand there being problems with using the character, due to him being created by Todd McFarlane. Nevertheless, I would like to see him return in some form, whether it be by Project Soul bringing Todd back, or something else. And, if we can't get Necrid in SCVI, then at least make an update of his moveset for Create-A-Soul. At least with that, players can more accurately create Necrid in Create-A-Soul, and/or wouldn't have to limit themselves to using the movesets (and mannerisms) of the characters already in the game for their created souls. This is a major gripe that I have with Create-A-Soul right now. What if I want Xianghua's moveset for a male soul, but not her mannerisms? What if I want a less sexualised version of Voldo's moveset? What if I want a different critical edge from that of the moveset that I'm using? What if I want to create an amalgamation of present and/or past movesets? I mean, seriously, if I wanted to use the current moveset, and see the mannerisms, of a character in this game, I'd play as _that_ character.

I’m wondering if you did a shred of research for this review after the game has been out for years. Putting fighting games in the same vein as EA is a huge stretch. The developers have even said that season 2 for this game was not even planned. They took a big risk making this game after the failure of sc5. It is why you didn’t see another game for over 10 years almost. Sc5 used old models and had that luxury, sc6 everything is made in the unreal 4 engine so EVERYTHING is from scratch. This game had indie game level funding and you are putting it in the light of EA? Sc3 had a great story yes and so does injustice. Have you played a fighting game this generation? NONE have a good story outside NRS. You didn’t make enough comparisons. You know what sucks about sc3? All the glitches and bugs that riddled the game. Sc6 doesn’t have that. Balance in old games is grossly unbalanced where as sc6 has the best balance of any fighting game in the current generation. If you did any research you would see why the game is what it is. Low funding, taking a risk, and it models current fighting games, meaning it is pushing the esports or competitive side of the game because that’s who stays. That is where the longevity comes from and tbh, SC doesn’t have that. Tekken is probably the best fighting game competitively because of how it carried on through a time where fighting games almost died entirely. We are lucky to even have sc6. Where you can really tell this just some ramblings of a guy who doesn’t know this franchise at all is the necrid comment. Necrid along with spawn in SC2 are in ownership of Tom McFarland. Necrid was made to sell toys and get the partnership to include spawn in the Xbox version. So because of copyright law, Necrid is not actually a SC character at all. Fighters in general have adapted away from single player because it’s a better idea to make the actual gameplay the best it can be. Considering that most fighters are low budget they only have time and $$ for one half and I’m glad they pick the gameplay half. NRS can do both because the have WB money they can throw at a project. HUGE DIFFERENCE. Ask any semi-competitive or competitive player, and they will tell you this is the best game since sc2 when it comes to gameplay. If you do a review of a game that is over 2 years old, do the research and don’t be lazy. The community behind this game work hard to show how fun it really is. This only hurts it for superficial reasons. Ps. The story actually adds a lot to the original story that was crap before. The retelling is great and gets better as dlc come out. Free btw

Hard disagree on this review. Libra of Soul wasn't mentioned despite it being functionally better than Chronicles of the Sword and having actual additions to the main story. Previous characters not being made available can be forgiven considering the changed movesets and system mechanics. And again individual character stories have more things fleshed out compared to previous attempts at it. (Looking at you, SCV.) The only thing I can possibly agree with are the DLC costumes somehow locked behind paywalls. This review feels unfair and dishonest. The main reason for it being lackluster is that it had a very low budget. Namco has been treating the series so poorly after SCIV. Even the director of SCVI admitted that he had to fight for more development time on the game. It would've been even more lackluster if it wasn't for the director's efforts. I think what they did with the limited budget and time that they had is really great. The game is still alive and has had 2 season passes so far. I hope that gets the message across to Namco that this series has potential, and hopefully SC7 doesn't get rushed or mistreated in anyway.

In this review there was no talk of gameplay whatsoever. You might as well have been reviewing Chess and conplaining that you can't take your Rook on adventures. So let me break this down his conplaints "Have to pay for DLC. " The only thing you have the right to conplain about is Tira being day one DLC. Every character including base roster and DLC are vastly diffirent from their previous iterations. "Singleplayer is garbage." Its true for Libra of Souls, but I don't appriciate you showing Soul Chronicals in the background while talking about Libra Of Souls. Soul Chronicals are fully voiced and have different images for faces and its disingenious for you to say otherwise. This game has more single player than most other fighting games. Also you have to do the Libra Of Souls mode with your custom. "Conpares Soul Calibur to Triple A games" If you think SoulCalibur is going to get a triple A budget then you are outside of your mind. Conparing it to Injustices, a WarnerBrother funded game is asinine. "Doesn't want to play additional SC because of lack of singleplayer content" Again like the chess thing, this is a fighting game. A low budget fighting game that is in the constant struggle of fighting for its existance. This game didn't have to exist, but for the fans it is much appriciated. "No necrid" He's a guest character that uses other characters moves, if you want to talk about lazy than he's your guy.

SCVI is the first Soul Calibur I've ever played and it fast became my favorite fighting game of all time with its movement and weapon based fighting. It even got me to try playing it competitively. I think it's anything but soulless and much of the game's shortcomings can be attributed to low budget and the publisher giving the devs a hard time plus the series was never that popular to begin with (in recent years). I think they've rather been quite generous by still updating it for a long time with frequent balance updates adding entirely new movesets, free stages and costumes also being released. Understandably if you are a single player only kind of guy there's prolly not that much content but just the character creator alone has given me hundreds of hours of play. Also a whole lot of other fighting games do the exact same DLC practises, because it's how they survive as a niche genre, some paywalling is to be expected and it's no different in Tekken for instance.

I think that's partly why you love Soul Calibur 6 so much, because this was your first experience of the franchise. I hated Soul Calibur 6 because it was underdeveloped in all the areas that I liked to play the game. In earlier titles the single player was pretty good where you had unique cut scenes, clever dialogue and strong voice acting. Soul Calibur 6 did not have cut scenes (budget limitations) and the dialogue was clearly written by someone who was not a writer and the voice acting was overacted to the point where it was pure cringe. In earlier titles you still had limited assets for character customization but you had to play the game to unlock all of it. Soul Calibur 6 did away with unlocking gear and made all of it, even the older gear, hidden behind a pay wall. And then there was the decision to hide crucial fan favorite characters behind a pay wall. I understand that the publisher had the final say on making it this way but to put core characters like Tira, Amy, Cassandra, Setsuka & Hilde as DLC content does not make sense. It should have been the newer created characters or the guest characters that got DLC treatment. My experience and Shad's experience of what the franchise used to be had a major influence on why we hated Soul Calibur 6. It used to be a good game, but it sold out its reputation for a quick buck. I don't think they will be coming out with any more Soul Calibir 6 content and when you add up the price of the game itself and all the DLC you are looking at $200 for all the bells and whistles, assuming you opted out of the Deluxe version of the game... That's a lot of money. That is the same price of 3 major AAA titles. Is this game worth the price of 3 games? No. No it is not. The price you pay does not reflect the quality of the game you receive in return. I hope Soul Calibur 7 is better but I will not be buying it. Soul Calibur 5 let me down and Soul Calibur 6 felt like a betrayal. It would be foolish to buy into any of the hype of a sequel and not expect that to flop too at this point.

Tira was not finished and still needed work but the community wanted her immediately so they pushed her out as a day 1 dlc and she was incredibly buggy because of it. Obviously the budget was dog shit and the 6 developers they have working on this game can't do everything, this is no secret, namco had little faith that sc would succeed after sc5 nearly dragged the entire franchise into the grave. Okubo needed to convince namco to let them try and keep the series going with a skeleton crew. The customization is terrible compared to sc5 as we are missing a massive amount of content its not the same.

It wasn't even supposed to exist and it's actually a miracle it does. As a result, the budget for making it was SUPER minimal. Knowing that, I still don't think it justify all the recycling (they got assets from SC4 for god's sake...) and low effort tactics they used to get your cash. The moment I saw that P2 outfits were just color swaps, which is a first in the whole series, I knew that something was off.

I don’t know why this video was made unless you saw the information, and chose to ignore it for a cash grab video itself. Soul calibur didn’t have a choice as it didn’t get any budget. It’s still well renown in the FGC and I could tell you reached hard for a cash grab case. Look at any fighting game, they all withhold characters for dlc. Go and find one that doesn’t. That was your first main point too. If you were gonna make a video why didn’t you talk about DOA6 the most cash grab fighting game in history, the pre buying costumes, and $1 for hair color change even though soul calibur is free.
@InfernalSpyro

Saying the game was a direct copy from 5 or a cashgrab isn't completely true imo. At first glance it doesn't sound like much research was put into this particular video in regards to single player while the other aspects of the game (which are important as well) are not mentioned. Libra of Souls is the CaC successor and there is dialog within the story both in text and in game cutscene for both story mode and Libra of Souls. In addition this was made with a small budget much like Tekken 7 was. Both of the games were mainly successful in part due to their respective competitive communities which are the main ones supporting fighting games for many years even to this day. Hence why more support occured. I get it when it comes to dlc and microtransactions. Unfortunately games have started to go towards this trend. SC6 and T7 were both successful enough for seasons to be added down the line mainly for tournaments and game balance. It has its problems (graphics, load times, reversal edge) but it sold enough for the developer to make a sequel and the gameplay is the best it's ever been for a long while which was surprising considering its budget.

Your forgetting that the Developers for this game were not funded as much as SCV. The fact that this game is in even a thing and plays so well gameplay-wise is nothing short of a miracle. The game kickstarted the Soulcalibur franchise, it constantly provides story content with the paid characters. The paid characterrs (who are old school characters) have been reworked fully to make them even more unique than ever, and in some cases, they been given full redesigns (Hwang Redesign is crazy) Yes, the game has its problems, and it had a very rocky start but the fact that the developers are very transparent with things and are engraved into the community is the opposite of a soulless company. Edit: Also I don't know if your playing the game on mute or something but every single voice line in the story mode is recorded. The only lines that are not all recorded are the Libra Of Soul lines (which you use your created character)

Some are talking about the small budget and that is also true... but what you Chad, as the superficial fan that you are, can't notice is that the characters in every installment are very different and requires effort to make them. In SCV all the characters were made with less moves in order to make the balance easier. But in SC6, even with the small budget, even with the little development time, they give all the characters so many new moves and brought back old moves that is ridiculous to say things like: "Why aren't all the past installment characters from the start?" SC6 almost wasn't made at all and was given hardly any budget so cheap? Maybe. Lazy? Not even close. The movesets are deeper than any previous SC. SC6 wasnt "low effort." The effort was just diverted from the superficial stuff to the important stuff. The old characters that are used as DLC are totally revamped and have a whole list of new moves so that you can tickle people's nostalgia and give them something they already like while also giving them something new. To say SC6 brings nothing new is ignorant and disingenuous. They added a ton of new dynamics to the gameplay including the new reversal edge mechanic. Trashing a game for not having a proper budget just ensures we never get another. Buy SC6 because Shad is full of poop on this one. Could it have been better? Sure. But the old characters aren't just copy and pasted from old games. If you like the previous SC games, SC6 is worth it only to see the vast improvements in how each character plays. Also the game has season passes...how is that objectionable? You have fighting games like Dead or Alive that nickel and dime people to death. You get games with loot boxes. But you're picking on the one that has an honest model that gives you exactly what you pay for? This is a real bad take.

Something feels odd about this video, as I remember there being two different kinds of story modes for SC6. The one where you pick a character and follow their perspective through the first few games, then there was the one where you can take a custom character through their own journey. SC5 had a similar problem with the lack of cutscenes where you had to read along with still images (but there were still a few cutscenes). I don't think we have the same idea of what a cash-grab is, as I'm unsure of the expediency of the production of the game but it wasn't to cash in on something else at the time (I think? I like SC6, but I totally agree with ALMOST everything here like 95% 😂. Necrid- Disagree with this, for those who don't know, Necrid doesn't belong to Namco, it belongs to Spawn's creator, that's why he hasn't appeared in another game, his case is similar to the bonus girls of SCIV. They cannot be used by Namco (unless they are negotiated again). Story mode- I don't think it's garbage, I think it is wonderful...story-wise. Gameplaywise, yes, I agree story mode is trash and boring. The AI (in the few 3 battles you actually play) is an insult to the player. If you want to watch the story mode is easier and more comfortable to do it in KZbin. The AI is overall a problem in this game, horrible programing, even in Legendary difficulty the AI can stay idly by waiting foro you to wreck it...🙄...boring. The AI in SCVI provides no challenge at all, in previous games it was so exciting to test yourself against it (including SCV). Here it is just waste of time. I agree in everything else, you totally nail it. Also, Chronicles of the Sword in SC3 (best mode in the franchise ever) is not even the main story mode, and even so is GODLY, limited but well written story and great gameplay combined with strategy. That said, Tales of Souls, the main story mode is awesome too, (and overall all the content SC3 offers). Libra of Souls was so disappointing, and don't let me start on those boring wall texts. All this DLC bullshit is worrisome, in the case of SCVI, instead of being a plus, is a NEED to make the game decent. There are even people who want a Season 3 (which only means more characters- the boring leftovers of Characters, by the way😴- and recycled creation parts, nothing noteworthy). Next game they will just sell us the same DLC of SCVI or just swap them with some of the already small base roster. Almost no content, modes or even noteworthy content at all, small base roster, recycled creation parts, I love the franchise, but definitely I will be careful before buying the next game.

The main story mode is text, yes, but it always has been, except 5 which while it had cut-scenes, it laser focused on a couple characters giving no one else a story at all. I would like to add something else, after reading all the debates in the comment section and as a fan since SoulEdge. We have to be honest, SCVI was almost dead (And I am saying ALMOST, not for COMPLETELY) even before Season 2 finished. Currently I have been playing through SCIII's content again, and I am having a lot of fun like with no other game in the franchise. Very difficult to find a match online in SCVI the lack of replayability of the very few single player modes the game has (only Libra has replayability, but I see not many people liked the mode, including myself I confess, so the mode goes ignored most of the time) Add the pandemic... And the worst of all, the lack of communication from Project Soul doesn't help them in any way (especially in pandemic times it was a must to improve this). But overall, as much as we love the franchise, do not be blind, we have to accept the game never got that much of attention compared to other games, it was a decent success compared especially to SCV, an okay-ish comeback, but even in the competitive scene, like in last EVO, it paled in comparison to other games as one of the two games with the least number of participants (even Samurai Showdown had more and it was still in beta at the time), and a lot of the EVO people (neutral ground) complaining because SCVI was there instead of a "better" game. 😢 But at this point, after all these months is safe to assume the game already gave everything it could. Personally, I think the game could had been better, and I understand the low budget excuse, still, I think the DLC is WAY TOO overpriced. I am definitely expecting a major improvement for SCVII, especially in content (of quality) and base roster. Because if in the next generation they use again the "low budget" excuse, then I am definitely out (because that means pay full price but don't expect much), I can understand it, but that doesn't mean I must like it or even support it. And I am a player that plays a lot of online, but that is NOT the reason I love this once unique franchise, this franchise offered a complete experience in the past, and sadly not anymore. But for those who say that because it is a Fighting game it doesn't matter the content, well, sorry to disappoint you, but this game offered a complete experience since the first installment, Soul Edge, so expect a more varied fanbase- a fact, even if you like it or not. 🤷 (If you were talking about Street Fighter, Tekken, or MarvelvsCapcom, etc, who have always focused only in Player vs Player I would agree with the single player content being just a plus and the least important aspect, but in the case of SoulCalibur...sorry but no).

Love ya Shad, but this felt a tad bit unfair. The game is not perfect and I do hear your complaints about reused assets. But given the games small budget I think they did a great job. The gameplay is the best since SC2, gameplay feels fast and fluid with characters having more depth and options than ever before. Lot's of single player options, three different kinds of campaigns: mainline (Taki, X, Kilik), individual character stories and than the custom character story. In particular the custom character story has all sorts of modifiers, weapon upgrades and exploration involved. There is also an arcade mode, although that is barebones. I don't think it is fair to compare it to NetherRealm's stories due to the fact NRS games have massive budgets while this game from what we know had a small budget even compared to T7 let alone NRS games. Training mode was overall done well, some quibbles but still very good. Initial roster wasn't that bad either 21 (20 if you don't count Tira) is pretty good these days and three of those were brand new characters. The only fighting games these days that have massive initial rosters seem to be KOF games. The only withheld content I can think of are the outfit DLC's, which is kinda lame since that used to be all unlocked. I don't count characters or stages since those obviously take much more time and money. Main complaint with the game is the netcode. It's better than T7's, but Bandai Namco really need to get their act together with good netcode. Other Japanese studios are figuring it out and implementing good rollback netcode. I don't know, I mostly only care about the gameplay and this one did that great with many additions and most characters receiving many more options and tools. Not every studio can afford an NRS style multi hour cut scene story. P.S Glad to know someone other than my brother liked Necrid, lol. My impression was that the character was a bit of a joke in the community.

Soulcalibur was always treated like the red-head stepchild. SCVI wasn’t supposed to happen. As it is one of my favorite game series of all time you have to understand that they did what they needed to do bc Namco Bandai doesn’t support them as much as they Support Tekken. If you’re going to shit on the game, understand the situation the devs were put in. SCVI to me is still one of the best fighting games in quite a while. The character stories were voiced-incredibly well if we’re being honest and most players didn’t care much for that CAS story mode thing but it was fun for what it was. Yeah they cut content but after SCV we weren’t supposed to get a SCVI

This, sadly, is true. Soul Calibur was putting everything in their combat and characters but we're not supported for much else, Tira was not supposed to be in the game they were developing lizard Man, but they saw her popularity and tried to get her in, they ran out of time and namco policy would make her payed dlc. Namco has little faith in the series because of its niche gameplay being completely different than the Trinity of fighters, Street Fighter Tekken and Mortal Kombat, heck Tekken's side step is a gimmick and plays more like the traditional 2d styles of the other two. Finally it has no competitors within this niche, if you want a fighting game that is easy to get into yet hard to master, provides full 8 way run movement, and has weapons based combat focused more on spacing and decisive hits not on long combo chains, this is all we have, companies don't want a casual audience in fighters anymore, they want big competitive players because they create more hype, yet for someone who doesn't have time to dedicate all their play time to learning one specific character and remembering all their moves and in what specific way to use them, those types of games aren't fun and I don't have the time, the Soul Calibur franchise allowed me to play it and not dedicate myself to it and I hate seeing companies destroy that type of entertainment

Shad, It's a highly competitive franchise and it had an extremely limited budget. I hate to tell you this, but the single player content you're after was simply not the focus. It is, after all.... a fighting game, which typically do not have huge returns. They had to put the focus on versus. It had nothing to do with being a cashgrab. In fact, Bandai Namco didn't even want to make it -- Okubo had to make several arguments for its existence. Also, those characters that are DLC got far more in the way of rework and new mechanics than the base roster did, so you arguably got more than your money's worth on that. SC5 played very different from 6, it wasn't all just copy paste. I don't expect you to understand the difference in mechanics..... just castles. We'll leave it at that.

He also said that there was no voice lines to go along with the story when literally everything is voiced. It might still seem "cheap" but it had to be because they weren't given much of a budget. From what I've heard, SC6 was going to be the last game in the series if it didn't perform well financially. So I guess that we should at least be glad that we got a cash-grab sequel rather than no sequel at all. Also, I've heard that SC6 multiplayer is quite a bit better than previous games, but that's just because basic things were missing from the previous 3 games like half-decent netcode and game balance. And this is just an opinion, but I don't think that fighting games get as much out of singleplayer content as other games when everything always just leads back to 1v1 fights on a very small stage. If you want a good singleplayer game, don't play fighting games. Play something else like Dark Souls which offers a large explorable world with a huge variety of enemies, bosses, and weapons with unique move sets and stats. For this reason, I think that the content in fighting games should be made to serve and complement the multiplayer and that everything else is just fluff that's added into the game with diminishing returns. I'd be satisfied if a fighting game just had an arcade mode, a solid and feature-rich training mode, a solid lobby system for multiplayer, and solid netplay. But if a fighting game WERE this minimalist, I would also expect it to be cheaper or even F2P, but it seems that fighting games haven't properly explored this business model. It seriously would've been awesome if SC6 were F2P. In fact, I'd say that one of the strengths of a fighting game is that it can be much more polished than other games which is why being minimalist would be alright IF it were F2P. And players that just want to play by throwing out moves with no proper regards for risk/reward or safety should just go play a different game. Fighting games can be fun for casual players, but the value proposition will never be as good for these kinds of players as it would be for people that REALLY want to be dedicated. Dark Souls PVP is a lot of fun for casual play.

SC6 has alot of quality of life improvements on character movelists (Hilde feels the most fleshed out out of all the games she's been), revamped the meter system from SC5 to something interesting. It has two story modes, one of which has voice acting work for the characters and retreads their stories ala MK9, and another that's akin to Weapon Master mode in SC2. That's much better than the shitshow that was SC5, and speaking of which is a miracle 6 was able to be greenlighted. I think Tira was the most controversial character to be made as dlc at release, but the other characters (Hwang, Setsuka, Amy, and Hilde) feel so much fun to play I think it outweighs the cost to paying them. This is from a gameplay standpoint tbf, and the thread for fighting games these days are to hype up these single character releases. I simply waited until their prices dropped and a sale comes along, like a few hours ago. The costumes I don't really care about. That's what's modding for, right? ;)

If they made SC 6, took out super bars, brought back the classic SC 2 and SC 3 parry mechanics instead of this just defend nonsense, the game would thrive again. They dont have any of the original mechanics or systems that made us all love the franchise years ago. Thats why they have flopped for years now. You never see anybody bring this point up though. I have no idea why. Take out brave attacks , just defends, supers, SC isn't about that. That makes it any other fighting game. SC has always been a unique game. If I’m given a low budget for a game I’m making from Bandai Namco then I’m going to milk any amount of money from it because it’s better to get something out of nothing. They didn’t even think this game would do good so why not milk more money out of it? Hell SC6 base roster was literally 20 characters + 1 Guest and Tira being Day One DLC so it was a good amount of characters. Making previous characters and items DLC was fine to me since it also came with updates to fix bugs and give patches so it didn’t go empty handed. The new characters we got were Grøh and Azwel. We also were able to use guest characters weapon style in which NO other game ever did unless you used a mod. Single player had Story Mode, Arcade Mode, and Libra of Souls. Since you don’t mention Libra of souls and I honestly feel it’s perfect for casual players as yourself. Story mode I can say was pretty good because of some lore you get out of it. Story Mode did have voice over to it. I’m trying to see did we pay the same game. Now as someone who is artist I felt offended by your remarks on the 2D artwork because an artist took their time to do them and they did change expressions I don’t know what you’re talking about but they did change expressions in story mode. Soul Calibur 1, 2 & 3 were more for casuals because it was no online play. SCIV and up changed that when online was available. So online play is the norm for fighting games.

I been a fan since SCII and yes some SC games had some flaws but they have some good things with them. SCVI being a low budget game gave characters like Cassandra and Amy blessings. They added new features that made online play even more exciting to play and makes you focus even more. Hell they even listen to fans and gave people basically a mini Chronicle of Swords with Libra of Souls which I have finished and enjoyed the feature. People who complain about this game I feel didn’t fully play it or had their hopes up too high. SCVI imo does cater to casuals and competitive players. However; fighting are now moving into the online ranking meta which a lot of people don’t see. Tekken, Street Fighters, Mortal Kombat imo caters to online play. I feel for casuals but majority of the time fighting games are mostly bought for online ranking. You will see some videos of single mode but that’s mostly cutscenes, character dialogue, and story mode. The rest is mainly online ranking.

As others have pointed out, SC6 is the hail Mary of the franchise, where if this installment didn't do well, the series would be officially dead. The fact that we got a sequel at all is a miracle. I keep seeing the idea of "lazy developers" come up in this video and it is a bad take. From what I've heard, the development cycle of this game was hellish, and given a low budget and/or short development time. If there's any party to blame for the faults of this game, it's Bandai Namco for not giving the devs the development time to finish all the returning characters and to polish the game. Besides Tira, every character DLC was developed post-launch. So the argument of "withholding content" for a quick cash grab is silly. Yes I would rather have the characters at launch but they weren't ready with the time that they had. Could they have released all the returning cast? Maybe, in a broken, buggy state with less moves/features. Each DLC character is fantastic, and you can tell a lot of time and care was put into each of them and their new, unique mechanics. They are definitely worth the $6 ($3 with the sale that just ended as I write this comment) purchase if you plan on playing them for an extended period of time. Also, I don't know if you've noticed but basically all fighting games have the same monetization model, and I would even argue that SC6 is on the tamer side of things. For a look at the worst examples, look at DOA5LR whose DLC collectively cost well over $800. Without a discount, all of the DLC for SC6 costs $64. Just to put things into perspective. That being said, half of the creation sets are pretty trash and not worth getting. You're better off buying the stuff you want individually rather than the Season Passes that include them. So I actually agree with you for the most part on this front. Next, is your rant about the story mode. So in SC6, there are 2 story modes within Soul Chronicle, one that follows a main narrative (Main Story), and one that goes over each individual character's story. Soulcalibur didn't have a main narrative story mode until SC5. Each individual story was only a thing in SC3 (Tales of Souls) and now this game. What you reference to compare these modes to is Chronicles of the Sword, which isn't even the same type of story mode. Not only that, but you didn't even mention Libra of Souls mode in SC6 which is most similar to Chronicles of the Sword which seems either dishonest or incompetent on your part. Now I didn't get to play SC3 but I did play SC2 which had Weapon Master mode, on which Chronicles of the Sword is based. And I can say Libra of Souls is superior to Weapon Master mode. Now maybe it isn't as good as CotS, but the fact that you didn't even mention it is silly. You also really don't like the text + pic + voice cutscenes in SC6, which I don't care for too much either but what would you rather have instead with the same budget? Just fighting and no exposition other than a text box like SC3 or Weapon Master? Don't pretend like it wouldn't cost additional development time/budget to make every single dialogue part of a rendered cutscene. Development time and budget that would be taking away from developing and polishing returning characters! Yes Injustice 2 has cutscenes but do you honestly think Bandai Namco is going to give the same resources and budget as freaking WARNER BROS? 8:30 - 8:40 um, Libra of Souls? Now I'm not sure if Sir Ben is serious about Necrid, but they couldn't bring him back in because he was a Todd McFarlane OC and Project Soul doesn't actually own the rights to the character.

I'm gonna put something out there so u all know. And can understand. 1 project soul isn't one split team. It isn't ever a stable group. It never has been. It's had several team leaders and many different people working on this franchise 2 the lead for 6 had to fight tooth and nale for bandaid namco to give any funding becaus they DONT FUND SOULCALIBUR ANYWHERE NEAR AS MUCH AS OTHER GAMES. If u look into the funding for a Tekken game verses a soulcalibur game it is astronomical. And that's not to even mention the size difference in the teams working on it 3. If u actually play lybra of souls you will get asclose to soulcalibur 3 as you can get with the lack of funding. Because the team that did SC2 and Sc3 didn't doo much if any dlc for 2 instead they saved the funds that where there to make 3 better then that was it for that team I do b legs that's just some of the issues I have here don't get me wrong I love the game I have sence I was a child I just hope you.learned something about why there are reused assets why the graphics are the same. It all comes down to lots of things that this franchise and the teams on it have to deal with and work with ps sorry if there are any extreme typos I'm nearly blind and using talk to text

Namco's Project Soul and Okubo (Soul Calibur 6 Lead)had made this game on a budget for the development, my guess is that they used A LOT of that money on Geralt. Which affected everything else later. The 2nd season was the indicator that game was gonna fall right back to sleep, with 2 more guests. Haohmaru and 2B ( big cash grabs imo ) the game tried it's best to follow the sibling title, Tekken. It didn't go well of course. Okubo left Namco a year after, I think. Abandoning Soul Calibur as a whole, leaving questions on "what happened?" and "when's the next game?" Harada (Tekken Lead and Namco GM) responded to those questions about Soul Calibur recently saying something like, " Soul Calibur 6 was successful, but didn't perform well financially. The series is on standby until they can figure out who'd want to lead the series, their finances for the next Soul Calibur development, and if people REALLY miss it."

To be fair Namco gave this game a pretty small budget, fighting games are a niche market and the previous Soul Calibur had a pretty bad reception. And don't forget that fighting games, specially in japan, live and die by the competition around it more than anything else, that's why Street Fighter V still profits even tho it had mediocre sales, the competitive scene is still very strong, most of the budget for SC6 had to go into the gameplay and everything around that, it's not even fair comparing this game to something like Injustice since their budget is way higher. The characters as DLC thing is a pretty standard practice nowadays and I do feel it's better than reselling new versions of the same game over and over, and on that same note, for the casual audience it may seem like they just readded an old character for a fee, but there's quite a lot of work when it comes to bringing back a character to a new game, they have to be rebalanced around the new system and mechanics, it's not just a quick copy paste, but I agree that it sucks that you can't get new characters without spending some dosh, and making Tira day one dlc stung quite a bit. And in all honesty the gameplay might seem the same on the surface but there was a lot of work there, movement is great, the movelists for each character are very well thought out and the overall speed feels fluid, it's pretty much a combination of the highs each previous game had combined into one. Oh and Necrid was a guest character lol I'm not trying to defend shitty cash grab practices, but as someone that plays fighting games, I felt like giving my 0,02$, specially because most of what I've heard here comes from a more casual audience, which is not a bad thing by itself , but it's necessary to get the whole picture when talking about FGs since these types of game go pretty deep.

SCVI was on a low budget and it showed from the start. As a long time fan, who's played and owns every game in the series, SCV was BAD...but at least it felt fresh and like a new game...a lacking game, but it felt different. SCVI feel dull and uninspired. "Oh look guys, character creation! Everyone loves that!" No arcade mode, very little modes to choose from, 2 player battle has never been worse, small character list, small stage selection, no stage variations, no original character costumes, reused characters animations, hardly any dialogue, museum's a joke compared to past installments, no CGI opening... something that every single Soul Calibur game has always had...Arcade mode...it's so boring. The new version of the Soul charge mechanic is very annoying and gets repetitive and old very quickly, reversal edge is annoying AF! I really wish they at least have the option to disable this mechanic entirely. It turns of fighting game into luck...why? It beats a lot of counters in the game and you can't even throw the opponent out of it not only that but it can be spammed as much as people want throughout the entirety of a match because it doesn't given cost HP or meter wtf? I was really excited for this game and I was really hoping that it would turn the franchise back to its former glory. (SoulEdge, SC, SC II, and SC III) Sure the game proved with updates and it's more fun if you have all of the DLC characters and I'm really glad they included the soundtrack from the entirety of the series for fans that care. (I do! The soundtrack of the Soulcalibur Series has always been very solid!) But it sucks it took until the last update of the game and the fact that you have to buy all the DLC just to make this game feel anything close to occasionally fun... I really hope this disappointing installment hasn't completely killed the serious because I'm hoping so caliber 7 will be able to release on next-gen hardware and do much better than Soul Calibur V I ever good. I really hope the series returns to its classic fighting game roots and feels like a true Soul Calibur installment once again. Soul Edge - Soul Calibur III The legend will never die.

These fighting games need to stop creating a shell of a game for the intention of potential e-sports popularity and go back to making games with a full package (available at launch / not disc-locked content). SCII, III, and even IV had everything to standard, maybe not as much as 3 but there was enough content across single player to make it worth the MSRP price. SCVI should have been $20 for how bare it is, and the characters from previous entries should have been free.

Chronicles of the Sword from SC3 was also one of, if not my most, favorite feature in all of the franchise. My friend and I both created our own sets of characters and would hand the controller over when it was their characters turn to fight. It was fantastic. But that feature is gone. Then some of the coolest characters have been removed. ZWEI was sick. Patroklos was pretty cool. Yun-seong. Among others.. And as you said...the campaign... I played the game for a month or so and just stopped. I play with my friends online now and it was really cool having random's join in on the fights. But the game is honestly dead, so it's just us 3 fighting each other on repeat. It wasn't fun anymore and my characters looked so badass. I feel you 100%, Shad... A true disappointment.

I forgot to mention that Nekrid only appeared/ was allowed to be in sc2 because of Todd McFarland/ Bandai's deal to allow Spawn in sc2 for Xbox. Bandai made a deal with McFarland toys for figures and the usage of Spawn, but Todd McFarland wanted to create a character to be in each console version of sc2 (Playstation, Xbox, Gamecube) hence Todd McFarland made Nekrid. That's why Nekrid hasn't appeared in any titles since.
