Though they started many years before Kid Cudi: Funny fact both are from NY and yes, Mike Doughty the singer said in an interview that he was trying to sound like the beastie boys in some way

Kid Cudi does sing a lot like Mike here honestly, I do see what you're saying. (Btw just because it's a comparison is between old and new doesn't make him wrong, it's a simple observation)
