I’m from New Orleans, born and raised and succotash is something completely different to me and the people I grew up with. We call this dish in the video either smothered okra and tomatoes with shrimp or smothered okra and shrimp for short. It’s south Louisiana food (what is often described as Cajun-Creole), instead of soul food. It even uses our local aromatic vegetable combination (onion, celery, bell pepper) called “the holy trinity”. Succotash for us (at least in New Orleans where I’m from) is a dish of corn, beans, tomatoes, okra and shrimp. It’s almost like a shrimp corn maque choux, but with okra and beans in it. Maybe your family was thinking of a different dish?

WOW! I was gonna ask to speak to the manager because there wasn't a dad joke. Glad I stayed till the end. I'm thinking substitute extra firm tofu for shrimp and add some seaweed for fish flavor. 😍 ❤ 😍

I just wanna say that I love how you thought of your own vegan substitutes instead of asking or even demanding the non vegan (who occasionally does make vegan recipes) to rework the recipe

Shrimp is certainly lower in fat and calories than lean beef: Three ounces contains 31 grams of protein, eight grams of total fat, and 3.2 grams of saturated fat. Even skinless chicken breast has a little more fat than shrimp.👍

Great simple recipe! Personally, although I can follow them and do well, I STRONGLY DISLIKE long recipes that require a million different ingredients (especially uncommon ones).

This ain’t soul food, this is Louisiana food (what is often described as Cajun-Creole). This dish is not part of some racial cuisine. It’s part of a Louisiana cultural cuisine. I’m not black and I’m born and raised in south Louisiana and I grew up my whole life eating this and everyone I know down here no matter if they are white or black or Native American cooks and eats this dish. I make this dish, my mother and grandmother make it and even my great-grandmother used to make this all the time especially for fridays on Lent (for Catholics) and her great-grandmother before her made it too. It’s part of our local cuisine which is not race based it’s region/culture based, we all eat the same stuff no matter the race and we all share the same food culture. It even uses our aromatic vegetable blend of onion, celery and bell pepper called the “Holy Trinity” (La Saint trinité in Louisiana French). In south Louisiana, we been sharing food culture no matter what race we are for hundreds of years and that developed into a distinct regional/cultural cuisine. Even what you call soul food is also region/culture based cuisine from the US south originally called southern food that whites, blacks and Native Americans eat and cook, all the same stuff. I don’t know why all the racial claims, these cuisines are not race based cuisines but are regional/cultural based cuisines that are multicultural in origin.
