Manu Dibango used to say that Michael Jackson had not been fair enough with him, as this was plagerized by the latter in the first song "Wanna be starting Somethin", the opening tube of his magnum album "Thriller", released in 1982, and which is still to date the world most sold album...Manu released his "Soul Makossa" in 1972, as the hymn to the African Cup of Nation, a football event that Cameroon, his country, was hosting in 1972...so this song as just strike 50 years...had Manu its author not passed away last year due to Covid, he would certainly had celebrated it at the opening of the last African Cup...help in January in Cameroon! In brand new stadium, just as in 1972 Cameroon had just got its first stadium!

I graduated in 1974 and remember the Same. We lived in a dangerous but more stable world than today. I wouldn't trade that for anything, we were better off than we thought. Hindsight is truly 20/20.

Speaking on racehorses, as a kid I was fascinated by Man O' War, and all racehorses in general. Don't know where that interest came from, I lived in the projects in the Northeast most of my life.

Ahhh, I love Secretariat. I despise horse racing. My favorite of all time is the angel Barbaro. I try to rescue horses from slaughter.

While I'm a metal head, I can't escape the beat, it just pulls you in and and raps you in funk. Excellent

This song was so influential to the disco movement in the 1970s. It was picked up by the clubs in New York at the time on a label from cameroon and went on to be a huge hit at the early disco clubs.

Good to hear! Is that your guitar playing on the recording? Cause, it's part of what makes this song so distinctive and funky.

In 1972 I bought this record and played it all the time in Chicago, and the radio stations played it as well, this was a jam on the skating floor, but you had to be a damn good skater to stay in rythem with the beat.

Late-1972? I had it pegged as early 1973. Yes, it got some heavy rotation on the AM radio stations out of Philadelphia, PA.

Cameroon saxophonist Manu Dibango, became an overnight sensation when his 1972 song was picked up by a New York DJ who played it nonstop, soon word got out from the Bronx to Europe, Afrofunk had arrived, even Michael Jackson sampled it

No offense sir but Manu Dibango was already well know in the streets of Paris as off 67 and specially 69 (Saxy Party album that i recomand you). Soul Makossa made him known worlwide and NY'djs sure made a big boost to this worldwide notority. Cheers 😉
