Young parents should realise that hymns and prayers that are said in church in a child’s early years remain in their hearts and minds forever. I am 87 and I certainly remember !!!

This is so very true. It is amazing how the words of a particular hymn come spontaneously to mind just when you are searching for the words you need to express praise and thanks, or to pray earnestly for help.

My favourite hymn from childhood. Dad sang it every Thursday during adoration prayers at home. He is 72years now. It takes my spirit to heavens.

These old traditional hymns had what no contemporary hymns can surpass: Relevant, devotional text and good, solid music. This hymn, which appears in the Westminster Hymn Book has a superb harmonization.

I absolutely love this hymn, I can remember when I was a child back in my old church Corpus Christi in Manchester UK in the middle 1950s and we sang this particular hymn regularly, it's so nice to see and hear young people singing this beautiful hymn, sadly at my church now in Australia it's never recited, I have noticed many of the hymns we sang as children now seem to have disappeared from our hymn sheets, another beautiful one was `Oh Mother I could weep for Mirth`, Tantum Ergo and many many more, I know we have to modernise but if you ever notice the congregations of most of our Catholic churches today you will see mostly older people and seniors like myself and are sometimes at a loss when all these modern hymns are sung, surely we don't have to loose all our old hymns, please remember there are still a lot of older people around.

We used to have this Communion hymn nearly every morning in the 1960s at 8:00am daily school Mass in four-voice by the Boys Choir under the direction of the late Howard F. Vogel at St. Benedict's in Eggertsville, NY. I still treasure the words of that text. What more prayer than the the text of this hymn and the Our Father does one need to offer up?

All the words of Jesus are eternal and infallible truth. God is the Father of all lawful desires. Marriage belongs to the Father. No one steals from God.

Soul of my Saviour sanctify my breast, Body of Christ, be thou my saving guest, Blood of my Saviour, bathe me in thy tide, wash me with waters gushing from thy side. Strength and protection may thy passion be, O blessed Jesu, hear and answer me; deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me, so shall I never, never part from thee. Guard and defend me from the foe malign, in death's dread moments make me only thine; call me and bid me come to thee on high where I may praise thee with thy saints for aye.

I absolutely love discovering new hymn tunes. How is it that this simple but intensely beautiful tune has been hidden from me when it's near 600 years old? I couldn't have asked for more but got it anyway when the opening of the final verse announced the raising of the host.....and then to discover the text in English and Latin? I didn't "die" but for a moment, thought I'd gone to heaven. Thank-you. Thank-you!

Hymnal in the back of 1971 Sunday Roman Missal, ‘Approved by the Australian Episcopal Liturgical Commission’, attributes this to Pope John XXII.

@@samlawson6507 Yeah, it's also attributed to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, either way, it's beautiful.
