I simply love this scene, it has SO many great quotes and shows us Raziel from a completely new angle. The whole powerplay between them, Raziel's naivity and Moebius' cunningness...it just adds up to a perfect scene. Seeing Raziel take a stand in this way, yet at the same time finding how hopelessly easy he is to trick in this state of mind....this story truly has some real flavor.

Actually I think its because Moebius is trying to sound old to deceive Raziel. Where as in Defiance the Façade is no longer necessary.

You noticed it at the first cutscene when Raziel follows Kain back. He starts off with the harmless old man routine, but immediately drops it when Raziel reveals he knows Moebius isn't just a harmless old man

Killing Kain was not enough, they wanted a change in the timestream using paradoxes in order to have a timeline where the Elder can feed on mortal souls. Most of the timelines ended with Raziel killing Kain and then he became trapped in the Reaver.

@@ericocccams5865 yeah, but he can't feed on vampiric souls, because immortality, Elder needs vampires and hylden out of the equation, so he can feed on humans who are easily manipulated, that's the great scheme, to alter fate so vampires and hylden are destroyed/banished from Nosgoth.

@@Rafesco Yep, and the fact they needed Raziel to do it because of what he could do with paradoxes... as well as the fact the Elder God and Moebius feared Kain's destiny as the Scion of Balance, since it was shown later he is destined not just to restore Nosgoth, BUT to also slay the Elder God and free the Wheel.

Raziel, despite being a champion of free will, is so easily manipulated throughout his whole jurney... I hated this part, but I realize it was also necessary for the end to come. After all, not even Moebius thought of the possibility that Kain could survive the Battle of the Champions at Avernus Cathedral. When I played the game, I scorned the way Raziel pardoned Moebius' life throughout the story... yet in Defiance, I understood that he would not have done anything by killing him. D.R.

he didnt know he only had one chance at killing moebius(when he 1st finds the reaver in william's tomb) and in all of his othr ecounters afterwards he figured there was no point if he was serving the Elder God, he would just be raised again unti lthe time he was meant ot die. if he actually tried ot go for the kill here some contrivance would end up negating him the chance. plus Raziel needed im here ot operate the device evne if he tricked him.

It is a shame Raziel is so determined to learn his origins that his recklessness and even his selfishness lead him so easily manipulated by Moebius and the Elder God all so they hope he will kill Kain and thus end Kain's threat to the Elder God, as well as how he unintentionally even aids their enemies, like when he resurrects Janos in Defiance, allowing the Hylden Lord to take his body after Mortanius dies when Kain refuses the sacrifice to restore the Pillars. Raziel means while, but he also doesn't see the damage he causes until it's almost too late.

This game's voice acting with word play was phenomenal for its time... Or perhaps still is. Such a shame the gameplay is wretched, and mangled to the point where the developers had to start from scratch with defiance. (It's really unfair that a great plot like this is held down by game play.)

I think the dialog and writting is masterful executted, that was thanks to actual theathrical actors and professionals. The gameplay is seriously outdated. Original Soul Reaver was heavy inspired by Zelda, maybe they can take in to account recent itherations of Zelda if for some miracle they try to remake the series.

it's no like he was capable of calling him out on it Raziel doesnt know how to operate the time streaming devices in order to be able to tell there was foul play. he had no leverage to strongarm Moebius into doing as he commanded, moebius doesnt fear Death and his shred of ominscience as guardian gives him the assurance nothing worse cna happen.

That's why he has free will - he's a walking, talking paradox, strolling around with a second, time displaced instance of his own soul bolted on to his arm. The reason why space distorts in Soul Reaver 2 and only in Soul Reaver 2, is because there are actually THREE Reavers involved every time. The Wraith Raziel, The Wraith Blade, and The Soul Reaver. It's literally giving reality an aneurysm.

I wish I could still play this game. Sadly the Steam version has some issues. Among them that once I shift to the special realm I can't move. Raziel does the run animation but won't go anywhere.

It really is a Thirty Gambit Pileup as you say. Its like when Raziel says that the right hand doesn't seem to know what the left is doing. Everyone is running their own schemes and agendas throughout the story except Raziel and Vorador (for an ancient, jaded vampire he's almost as unassuming as Raziel throughout it all. Probably boils down to his fatalism). Moebius, Kain, Janos Audron, the Elder God, Mortanius/Ariel, and the Hylden are all working at cross or marginally complimentary purposes at best.

at this point, nothing. Raziel is not at the brink of a paradox like last time. killing him here would be the same as as any other time, either circustances would take place ot prevent the opportunity or the gos he serves would bring him back as he did before.

@@chrishill3536 if he had the capacity to do that at that point we would know. its shown at all points that where you are on the verge of a paradox caused by the reaver raziel notes a distinct sense of vertigo and his perception of space warps around him. this did not occur this time and this event happens after the wraith blade and " wraith Raziel" collapse on each other(when he repaired the broken reaver), past this point the reaver on hisarm and raziel are a singular entity. this was the solution of the paradox at the time.

In that moment he understimated Moebius, he learned that at the end of SR2. And Moebius never let his guard down in front of Raziel from that moment.
