Will is one of the loveliest people you will ever meet. His golden retriever level's of positive energy are off the charts. He did an audio narration about bats. Oh my christ it is the funniest thing I've ever heard. Also as an instructor of harsh vocals, he is so engaged. Even though he'd just got back from touring and he was dealing with like forty people in the zoom calls. Chris and Elizabeth kept having to remind him that the time was limited because he just wanted to have full on conversations with everyone and explain to them how they could tweak something or improve something or he'd go off on tangents about throat singing. It was an utter delight.

Yeah I don’t think it is anything other than an arrangement choice. Some listeners get really upset if you mention it but honestly it doesn’t mean people are talented. I’ll need to watch more of him talking about it. Thanks for watching my dude 😊💜

It is remarkable that the intensity of extreme vocals and the creativity has continued to flourish for all these years when it was in its infancy and I was going to see some of these early shows you just simply could not believe the power and intensity that vocalists like David Vincent from morbid angel, Chuck Schuldiner from death, John tardy from obituary, and let us not forget the immortal Tom Gabriel Warrior from Celtic Frost.... you couldn't believe the sounds these guys were producing with no pitch shifters and no cheating they were just putting this amazing power into the microphone and shaking the room with their guttural voices now all these years later these kids have had so much to stand upon as all things that progress it's built on the generations before you and I think we are going to see even more creative and interesting things from these kids as the years go on it is the nature of things in the arts. Now it's easy to get caught in the Trap of thinking that your generation was the be-all and all and that the new stuff sucks but that is just not the case metal heads come on... open up your brains and remember that when you were in the trash and early death metal all the standard issue heavy metal guys thought you were a freaking clown. But this stuff has stood the test of time and it's a legitimate genre

I think the best way to hear what Will does and where the production comes in is to listen to his one takes. I did his metal vocals course and it's very different to hear unproduced vocals from an instructive tutorial point of view. There are a lot of exceptional harsh metal vocalists out there but they don't have the backing of the sound engineering required to make something marketable. Though there are some harsh vocalists who can actual double harmonic without any required engineering. Alex Terrible being one of them. If you want to go down the harsh metal vocal tunnel (tunnel instead of rabbit hole because tunnel throat, I'm a riot) then starting with Dickie Allen is probably the best place to start. Dickie is the throat GOAT. Then you have the likes of the one take harsh vocal god from Nitheful. Props to Will for being an absolute vocal star but he was inspired by people like Dickie who have been doing the most filthy vocals for decades. Also CJ McCreery the former singer of Lorna Shore is an exceptional vocalist and worth checking out. Dude got the hard end of the stick with the accusations that led to him being dropped from Lorna Shore but he's bouncing back which is awesome.

Yeah, Will Ramos has quite a range of vocal techniques going on. And he does them really well. The vocal production e.g. with Lorna Shore though is quite extreme - as is the genre and it's sound standards. It is something like blackened deathcore. Both genres are not known for crystal clear, punchy and defined sound. And it is hard to get that right, already by how the music is written and performed. 7 to 9 string guitars are there, often downtuned, the sound is often scooped and mushy in the mids (YMMV, but this is how it represents itself to me...), and there are some sound heritages from the modern black metal influence, like the exaggeration of quite high definition from the guitars and some boomy lows, as well as cloudy mids and lots of room. If you want to compete with the voice against this, you need quite extreme EQ decisions, IMHO. Therefore, probably double tracks etc... to make it work better in the sound context of the songs and instrumentation ... Yeah - you are so right. "No effects in the studio" and competitive production are excluding each other. I once made an EP production from live tracks out of the desk of a small venue. And to make it somehow competitive to the standards, you need quite some work, and the genre was melodic death metal. The sound guy at the venue knew his stuff, and the guitar sounds normally worked really well and were using minimal effects live. Still, it needed a lot of work, and of course - the vocals got most attention. Even the guys in the band did not remotely recognize HOW much work and effects were in the vocal sound. Not even the vocalist himself (I never played the original audio tracks to anyone...). It sounded like we/they INTENDED it to sound. It was far from natural, but it sounded like stuff that you listen to in studio productions. Leave the vocal tracks dry in these extreme genres, and you are LOST. You compete with extremely polished hi-end productions, to make it work. This said - I strongly recommend to look into Dickie Allen's vocals in his band Infant Annihilator next. This guy is NUTS. He is a legend for a reason. I saw a clip of him recording some crucial vocals for "Blasphemian", and they made fun, and it looked so easy, but MAN, this guy sounds crazy rich without effects thru the camera mic already. Infant Annihilator generally is an extreme band and does not take itself serious. They are legendary, because they push everything to the max in deathcore. Let's call it the hardest genre you can think of, at least the way they are doing it. And it insanely technical, these guys have skills to show off. I seriously admire these guys and totally love their attitude. Like how to exaggerate literally everything, set a new level for the word "extreme", even in the lyrics, and have a great fun time reading the comments about how they program everything or how they use all kind of "computer trickery" and how this all is "not legit". In short, all this stupid boomer musician jealousy of people that can not stand the skills of others. Really, I love these guys for that alone. Oh, and their videos are nuts also. Have a great weekend, Melisa, I always appreciate your videos. I think it's great that you look into the more extreme genres and what kind of vocal techniques are used. There is a lot of diversity and strange talent there... Best regards, my Scottish dudette!

Completely off-topic, but I figure you'd probably know - I notice you have several Discworld paperbacks behind you - have you read Maskerade? Do you understand what Agnes was doing with her voice that was so impressive? I get that it was amazing, but I don't know why. . If you fancy another version of This is Halloween from the "inhuman" side of vocals, I strongly recommend Nik Nocturnal and Austin Dickey's version.
@SoulSingerDiscovers Жыл бұрын
I love Maskarade, I think I’ve read it like five times! Honestly I don’t think anyone can do what Agnes did but she did occasionally sing in harmony with herself which a singer named Lalah Hathaway can do sort of. I like an off topic question 😊💜

To each their own. And to be honest, these vocals are an abnormal acquired taste(like black licorice, hate that stuff 😂) lol and not everyone will come around to it. It took me years to finally enjoy these vocals lol I mean I could start a riot with just saying a few well known singers names that I don't like. In no way am I saying they aren't talented, they are professionals haha, it's just that their voice's do not appeal to me
