Soulja Boy thinks Method Man's simply reacting in the moment by swearing off any future Hot 97 Summer Jam shows -- but Soulja says the boycott does raise an interesting point about hip hop's mecca preserving its history!!!

The bay area and Houston are possibly the only two cities that still respect and acknowledge the OGs. You can go to the bay and still see kids listening to E40 or too short, and even quoting them on a day to day basis. You can go to houston and see kids listening to scarface, paul wall, mike jones, ugk, etc…i havent seen that level of respect for the foundation of hip hop anywhere else. You’ll see some of that in LA, and other parts of the midwest. But not that much. NYC on the other hand, despite being the birthplace of hip hop, ironically doesnt care about it as much. They are quick to say “we invented it!” But probably cant name atleast 5 DJs from the 70s or 80s that had a hand in creating it in the first place

Sounds crazy to older ppl like myself (im 34) but you can’t be mad at the younger generation if you haven’t been feeding the younger generation any new music they can relate to… I respect how hip hop started but never in my life have I sat around listening to MC Shan or Melle Mel or the Furious 5 because its just too outdated for me

It's not that serious. I grew up in the 90s and love hip hop. If I went to a concert in 1999 and they put Rakim on stage, I wouldn't be lit either. How can you get lit for a song you didn't grow up with; doesn't mean you're disrespecting nor dislike the artist. I knew Rakim songs and liked them but that 80s boom bap sound wasn't lit to us... doesnt mean we didnt appreciate it. Yal taking it to serious. If rap was created in the late 60s, early 70s yal old heads who grew up in the 80s, wouldn't be vibing to it either.

The ironic thing is, Method Man is huge globally as well as the other OGs like Nas etc. They sell out overseas because the audience loves original boom bap/hip hop. The current American audience "trap"ped in the same holding pattern for almost the last decade. Not all of America of course, but a big part of it.

Lawd... I hate to sound like a broken fuckin' record, but music runs in trends and ALL artists eventually get phased out of the mainstream in order to make room for the next wave of talent. Look at history, ladies and gents. Queen Latifah had the late '80s to the early '90s. When Lil' Kim and them came out, Queen Latifah got phased out. When Big L and Nasir came out, Big Daddy Kane and them got phased out. See, it happens to ALL artists. NYC kids (keywords 'kids') do not know Method Man music because he's a '90s artist who's no longer in the mainstream. The kids of this generation are kinda different from the kids of my generation. I'm 38 so as '90s kids, we were always diggin' through them crates tryna find the dopest cassette tape or vinyl to listen to. I started out listening to Hip-Hop when I was really little in 1990. I was goin' all up and through my dad music collection being intrigued by LL Cool J's _Mama Said Knock You Out_ or even Lakim Shabazz's _Pure Righteousness._ As the generations go on, kids ain't doin' that no more. Everything is completely different nah. To all of my old school artists, do not feel down about the ageism thing because we can all remember that it's inevitable. "THEY ONLY DO THAT TO BLACK ARTISTS!" That's a gotdamn lie. What happened to New Kids on the Block after they got older? Hell, they phased out Debbie Gibson and she was only 23 years old. Spice Girls, Britney Spears, etcetera. See, ALL artists eventually get phased out of the mainstream.

Gen Z is the first generation in history to have complete control on how they consume media. The old school was forced upon previous generations because it was part of the package that was consumed. In fact, hip-hop was created from and still thrives on flipping tracks from the previous generation and making new music. So when young people don't acknowledge the previous generations, it is a little sad. However, it's their time to make a statement, so I can't be mad at Meth for deciding to move on.

How is it that when we where teenagers in the early 2000s we knew the older generation and younger generation and That's both hip hop and R N B this new generation don't respect nothing that was before them and That's why all the music that's being put out now is trash and these new artists not making money like that.
