Has Your Judgement Ever Been THIS Wrong? | Tell My Story

It’s certainly easier to make assumptions about people than it is to spend time getting to know someone. We wanted to put assumptions to the test to see what we're missing out on because we're so busy assuming we already "know" a person. Join us as we discover why you should never judge a book by it’s cover in our new series, Tell My Story.
We are all conditioned with certain biases. In this experiment, we challenged these biases by asking people to make assumptions about their partner's appearance without ever actually seeing their partner. When they flipped around to finally face each other, they were shocked by how wrong they were.
Now tell YOUR story. What do people assume about you?

Hear me out, how cool would it be to have the thumbnail black and the visual black until they reveal themselves, so we can make our own assumptions about them, and after all that they can show the visual to the audio of the video. Opinions?

I think people assume I'm a very shy and/or boring girl and also weird and maybe a bit rebel. Something I struggle with is that I somehow just can't be myself when I'm with people. I have social anxiety and am super awkward in social situations. Only people I have known for a long time or who I feel comfortable with get to know me to some extent. But honestly nobody knows the real me, like how I am when I'm alone. I actually talk a lot to myself and am my own best friend.. can't be the only one right?

Tina de Ronde Well, everything you said is the way I am, and the only thing that I would like to add, is the way people like to quess another's age. Due to my height, appearance(mainly my clothing) and my attitude, people often assume I'm old. Like, once there was this women who thought I was in my early 30s while I'm still a teenager. I know age is just a number, but it just crumbled down my self-confidence and made me question myself if I really looked that old. That was like two years ago though and since then I've gotten used to all this, but I just wish that people really stop assuming things just because of someone's appearance. It's honestly irritating.
@TinaSound25

The dawn right before the sunrise is the darkest I don't know you, but maybe people just assume you're older because of how you dress. Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with your face. I on the contrary, still look like a 12 y/o while I'm turning 17 in two weeks ._.

People think because I'm small and cutesy looking that I'm dumb and young when actually I'm a very acomplished and quite old person. Some judgements are more harmful and extreme than others but we all share that problem because we all judge even though we know it hurts

Some were obviously wrong. I think they went with their gut instinct instead of thinking about it. Like when the woman with the hat guess the other was mid 30s, yet she had grown up children, which is really not common, especially 4 grown up children. The young woman guessed a professor of psychology was late 20s/early 30s.... that is insane, it does happen, but crazy nevertheless. I am not mocking them. It is just me observing how stuff like that was missed. Either they went with gut feelings or they did not pay much attention or maybe was distracted. It was an interesting video!

We were wondering about this as well! Our thought was, perhaps they made other assumptions about their partner that overruled some of the facts they were being given. Have you ever made assumptions about a person's age or intelligence because of the race or gender you assumed they were? Sometimes it's hard for people to let go of the initial judgements they've made, despite new facts they learn about a person.

I can only speak for myself, but the assumptions I made were not due to any nervousness. While doing this experiment, I had a LOT of thoughts going on. What did she say? What did I say? Lol How old does she sound? Is there an accent? Where is her voice coming from? (Was she taller or shorter than me?) Does she remind me of anyone? WHAT DOES SHE LOOK LIKE? What does she think about me? How do I look? Why didn't I get my eyelashes done? Lol, but seriously! Those are just a few of the things that were going on in my head. Knowing that I probably would not be what she was imagining, I knew I could be very wrong. But, I didn't want to overthink the situation. Many thanks to Soul Pancake, for this opportunity. P.S. I adopted my daughter when she was 16, the same age as my eldest daughter at the time. She has now been a Professor of Sociology for over two years. She is 29 yrs. old. I am 53.

I'm guessing you're good at making deductions (at least, better than me) because I would have never caught that haha. I thought the mid 30s thing was weird though, with four kids outta the house. What I found amusing about your comment was that you said they probably went with their "gut feelings" and that's possibly why they were wrong. For me, it's the other way around. I rarely listen to my mind's logic when making deductions (well, only when making financial decisions but even then, I let my gut give some input) but I freely listen to my intuition/gut. Every person is truly different :)

I was just thinking about how no one in my nursing or science classes looks at me very nicely. Although, I'm always smiling and I dress nice. My version of dressing nice is adidas jacket, joggers, nice shoes, and I look very urban and edgy. I think for that reason people assume that I'm not intelligent or that I'm not taking the class seriously. When in reality, last semester I was one of the few that didn't drop out and I got an A in my anatomy class! I walk into a class of people looking very casual or even in sweats; I like to dress I little bit more my style with nice, expensive clothes. I even try to be really nice; I say "thank you" all the time, I'm very polite, but I still get that treatment, it's interesting.

I've been nothing but nice to her. I try not to let it get to me because I know I'm smart. if only my principal came in to my calculus or physics class and saw me hard at work. it's hard to stay confident when people always expect less. intelligent people come in all shapes and sizes. I don't understand how people call judge me based on my clothes. it proves nothing.

Idk. I get judged differently by different races. Black people think im snobby and try to be white. Other races think im just shy and stand offish. Im a black guy but people say I "act white" which is stupid. I act how I want to act not trying to be a certain race. Then if someone plays "ghetto" they're acting black. I dont act like that sooo... clearly not. Stereotypes are so stupid.

because I'm 1/2 black, my teachers often assume I can't comprehend or do the work asked of my white peers. most of my teachers ask me questions slowly and loudly, and take me aside to make sure I understand what's going on. They do none of this to anyone white in my class. They openly act surprised when I receive top scores on anything or are able to answer a harder question. It's annoying to know that just because of my skin color my teachers assume I'm slow and can't catch onto things.

Because I have a wheelchair, people often assume that I am mentally challenged, rather than physically, and they act like I need help with things that I don't or that I don't understand things which is not true, I know I am intelligent and I understand lots of things that able bodied people might not. It's also assumed a lot that I am younger than I am (a blessing and a curse) because I have chubbier cheeks and big eyes and I am quite petite. In terms of my clothing, I wear a lot of comfortable clothes rather than fashionable ones, which makes people assume that I am lazy or lacking in social awareness. To that, I say that I am not lazy, I do ballet a lot and I go on walks (the wheelchair is only temporary, I'm not in it 24/7) and my social awareness is in fact very high. Someone once told me "I'm glad I got to know you, because you're not how I thought you would be at all,". Apparently, they thought I would either be very slow and boring and dumb, or too snappy and protective and ignorant. I must admit, that hurt me, but I hate that people make assumptions. I'm not saying that I don't because everybody makes assumptions because that's just how society works, but I wish people didn't. Thank you if you're still reading this, it shows me what sort of person you are, without having to make assumptions ;-) XD

I hate when people with tattoos complain about "being judged". being tattooed is a choice being Black American is not.

Rachel D that doesn't change the fact that you can get judged for having tattoos though.
@chickenpermission6890

***** ok? That's not my point either. I'm Hispanic and it's not the same as being tattood. For example. That by it self does not change the fact that prejudice towards tattooed people exist. In the same way, tattooed people being judged before hand for being tattooed does not change the fact that black people might exprcience racism. Both of them have the right to express their feelings towards both issues that affect them and that's exactly what they did.
@chickenpermission6890
@chickenpermission6890 7 жыл бұрын
***** that's not the point of the video though. Of course I don't know the struggle of being black. They were sharing experiences and relating to each other though. Supporting each other. Why is that so hard to understand. They weren't competition for worst experience award. Also, if someone else having a broken leg will not make the pain of a cut disappear. It's like telling someone who hasn't eaten for 3 days to stop complaining because there's starving children in Africa. I'm not lessening or degrading the reasoning that black people can go through rough shiet but that's not the point the person in the video was trying to make. Please understand that. He can talk about his experiences as well as her. Also, having a tattoo and because it's a "choice" does not make it okay to go after a person. Also, "last time I checked the majority of people like tattoos" "last time I checked the majority of people aren't racist " (and I get that that's not the only reason )that statement could work too but there's always that group of people that don't follow this category. ✌

This video and the others about assumptions are really interesting. They make a point saying that assumptions a lot of the time are wrong but it's something we all do. Even when you try not to judge someone you do it anyway. If you do judge that person at least keep an open mind to change those assumptions later

I think because I’m proud of my ethnicity and culture people assume I dislike white people. And this is absolutely NOT the case. If I wear a Malcolm x t shirt and loc my hair, this doesn’t mean I dislike anyone else. It simply means I love myself as I am❤️. Also, because of my skin color; many assume I’m uneducated when I’m a card carrying member of MENSA. People also expect Ebonics to roll out of my mouth when I speak and are often taken aback when my vocabulary is more vast than their own 🤔

I hate to admit that I've been judging Lucy by her appearance through the whole video. However, what she said and how she said it, it just did not come along with the image, it was less shallow and more sensitive than I expected. So I've had this fight in my head between the look and what's inside there and the video has definitely illustrated the "don't judge by the cover" saying for me.

@nathaliamonroe7454
@nathaliamonroe7454 7 жыл бұрын
You're not lying. I would probably be one of those butthurt Black girls! It is my personal belief that there is something wrong when you are not attracted to your own people. I don't think it has to be an exclusive attraction, but I think you should love your people. That being said, I am a Black woman who married a white man. I've known a lot of Black men to get butthurt about it. It's not that I don't think Black men are beautiful. I simply fell in love with a white man. I don't know how the hell it happened. It just happened. I find myself getting automatically upset when I see Black men with white women in public. I find myself with eyes narrowed and lips pursed, every single time. And then I realize that I have wed myself to a white man, and I''m being hypocritical. I had always wanted to marry a Black man, have chocolate babies with natural hair in puffs, sing "brown baby" to them at night--as my mother sang to me. But life is strange, and unexpected, Demetrius. You never know why things are the way that they are. I know how my life looks, from the outside. I have learned not to judge.
