OK I got one of these for a Christmas present by accident, my brother was supposed to buy me an E5 portable sound card to hook up to my tablet/ phone but bought me this thinking it was the same thing as an E5 but a newer upgraded version. I already own a Sound blaster Z onboard sound card. But I tried it out anyway and rigged it up via the optical lead to see what it was like. I use a set of Sennheiser HD650 headphones which are definitely quite a good set of cans. When I started to adjust the graphic equalizer using the G6 I first noticed that the decibels only go up to 8db on each frequency, but what I was mostly not impressed by, was the fact that when you adjusted each frequency, the others would flake out and become muffled slightly, the G6 couldn't handle it. My sound blaster Z is much better in this respect as when you push the decibels up on each frequency the others do not flake out and also you have far more range to play with (24db's). Obviously there are some good things, like the surround sound functions are quite good and the audio, when flat on the equalizer, is also very good. You can set it to 32 bit 324khz (Studio quality) in sound panel, but only in direct mode. So in direct mode, you don't have access to crystaliser, surround or any other functions that X-Fi utilize. I did not notice any real change in audio quality over my SB Z onboard card when in this mode though. Other good things were the RBG control on the lighting of the sound card (I like shiny stuff like that) and the simplicity of the software which has become very geared towards your hardcore gamers in some ways. I sent this back as it did not really make any improvement over my current on board SBZ, in fact its not anywhere near as good in terms of flexibility with the graphics equalizer which is kind of a big thing for me as I like to fully tailor my sound. In short, if you already have a reasonably good onboard sound card, don't bother with this, its a good external sound card but not good compared with a proper onboard.

This is actually surprisingly alright for a Creative product. Fewer gimmicks than usual, and actually has good internals. Good luck finding just the virtual surround decoding on anything less expensive, and that one is not a gimmick if your primary use for the amp will be gaming.

It's not simulated surround, it's Dolby Labs algorithm for 5.1 and 7.1 surround. The spatial left to right is because of the discreet amplifiers.

The problem with this thing is at its given price point... You can buy a Schitt-Stack for a little less... (Magni + Modi Combo). The only thing you are giving up is DD decoding for the most part. Budget = Xonar DGX (or DG if you still rock a regular PCI slot), Mid-Range = G5, and the High-end range is comfortably crowded with the Schitt Stack and AE-5 for less money.

I have the older model and its so versatile that makes it great. Sound quality is definitely great. I have bettwr dacs and headphone amps, but they aren't portable. The imaging isn't as good as my other gear, but they are substantially more money, and for the versatility, its awesome.

This really ought to have been a blind A/B test. You should have a friend help you, without telling you the which device you're plugged into, and see if you can still tell a difference. It's possible that this thing might have more powerful amps than a laptop sound card's, so the loudness could be a dead giveaway, but it would be interesting to see the results without a selection bias.

An amp can output a certain level of power, split between two channels for stereo. Motherboard audio runs this way. Creative uses a dual amp system, so each channel has it's own dedicated amp. They call it Xamp, although most headphone amps run this way as well. It does provide a cleaner and more consistent sound to each channel.

Did you test to make sure the sound intensity (i.e. decibels) coming through your headphones was the same out of both inputs? I have noticed when moving around to different sources with my Sennheiser headphones, that a source which is slightly quieter will seem a little more muddled than another. But if I turn the volume up a bit, it becomes "clearer". I don't know about you, but I find it extremely hard to do reliable comparisons because of this and inconsistent frequency response curves.

check your usb port in pc you don't need to download additional drivers from creative website just windows drivers are enough too run this device

I want to improve the overall sound quality of my setup, even tho it has a good onboard audio, i think my Asus mb got some sparkling noises from time to time. Noticeble when starting/pausing videos or Windows sounds, i think a DAC/AMP might help on that.

Unless the testing is done blind and the audio levels are matched to within 0,1db, any A/B testing of audio equipment is useless and subject to bias. You're very likely to play slightly louder when using the G6 than when using the build in audio, and a difference in loudness greater than just 0,1db fools you into thinking the audio is more clear and superior. Also, confirmation bias from knowing the source will have an impact. In 2018 a DAC is a chip that, when implemented according to specs, is audibly transparent and indistinguishable from any other modern chip. Likewise; any amplifier in a portable device such as a laptop or the G6 is likely also chip based and designed specifically to drive relatively low impedance headphones like the ones you used, and when implemented and used within specified parameters is unlikely to sound different from any other. Any perceived difference in audio quality is likely to be due to bias and difference in volume.

I have a supposedly "high end" audio dac on my mobo. Biggest upgrade I ever made was an external dac. The difference was night and day. It totally destroyed my integrated dac. I have high end headphones, amps, etc but no upgrade was more obvious than the dac. Do yourself a favor. Obviously you need some decent headphones to appreciate the upgrade.

lol, why? first, this soundcard doesnt have bluetooth. the E5 does. use LDAC lossless high rez audio that are available on your headphones. it can easily handle flac bitrates. hopefully you are not using a cheap BT receiver.

there is decent buget DAC/AMP's that go for less than $150, the thing with DAC's and AMP's is you need to ask your self if you need / want studio grade audio and if you are willing to spend studio grade money on that, or if you just need better audio and you are good with a cheaper model. either way this product is not going to give you studio grade audio, and it is also more expencive than the cheaper and equally sounding options. anything branded for "gamers" is a waste of money of there is similar product marketed for normal people.

All of these "gaming" soundcards are a collosal waste of money. Buy a proper Audio/MIDI interface instead. Since they're used for audio production they're crystal clear with zero gimmicky fluff. I have a Beringer UMC404HD myself, and it's even slightly cheaper than the XG6. I saw a deep analysis of the DAC on a forum (don't have the link to hand) and it's shocking how clear it is, even at the full 192KHz sample rate. Soundblasters have always been a bit shitty, especially compared to proper production interfaces.

But there are few doubts about those Behringers. Everyone says they are zero latencies products, but then there are people saying the latencies are pretty big. This machine is lot bigger than these SoundBlasters. So many connectors, it makes you feel like, oh... and where do I put my USB ? People don't usually know that the printer shaped port is also an USB port. What about gaming? Will it be compatibile, work fast? What about listening to music via computer? Is it going to work just like that or am I going to be in need of doing some more settings before Iam on the go. Those Behringers are great... Especially for recording singing, instruments, the ability to have 48V, ... I'd love to put my hands on them, but the problems I listed are the ones I believe most people are going to have and will rather choose these gaming ones.

@@MrSeifer159 I believe you heard about people, who ask if an AMD GPU is compatibile with Intel CPU and vice versa. This kind of stuff that is absolutely easy to understand. I believe that if any device does not advertise, or worse even list, the compatibility with Windows, use with games, listening to music, ... people will still go and buy X G6. Me myself, Iam going for integrated ALC 1220 with good driver implementation, when I, hopefully, will be buing a mobo. Reason is, compatibility reasons. I cant risk problems as BSOD if cable disconnects, ... or worse as Asus has with their Xonar Essence STX II with ZEN platform.

@@krakenader Yeah that's what I wanted to hear :) I'm waiting for Asus Rog Crosshair VIII (x570) or similar mobo, I like that I won't lose 1Go ram because of this dac too. Thanks for your wisdom :) Are you waiting for Navi and Ryzen 2 to hit the stores too ? :D

@@MrSeifer159 Well. I mainly aim to finish my Bachelors degree. Then it will depend if I will go and move from my FM2+ platform to Zen2 - but yes Iam excited for R5 3600X, but I am interested in B450/B550 - something sort of MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC - or if will realise that no I still dont have any spare time and stay with my notebook. I dont consider any GPU upgrade tho, my GTX 660 is enough for games that I play: Witcher 3, Kingdom Come. I could use a more powerfull GPU if I was still around 3D Graphics and redering but again, I dont have that time now :-)
