Germany lacked the strategic resources to fight a long war so they had to achieve all their objectives as quickly as possible to avoid being bogged down into a war of attrition. You say that the US entered the war late but the US spent years after declarations of war preparing for the invasions. The US simply lacked the capacity to seriously challenge the Axis forces for years after Pearl Harbor. Time was also on the Allies side as they had access to the resources of an entire continent whereas Germany never even managed to take control of the strategic resources which were the object of its invasion of the Soviet Union. Thus the Allies pursued a long war strategy in order to bring all of North America’s industrial capacity to bear on the Axis. Germany assumed that the Soviet Union would basically collapse after they kicked in the front door and that Britain would accept a political settlement after their boys were driven into the sea. Neither of those things happened but, remarkably, Germany maintained cohesion basically until its society was literally destroyed.

We now know the Wartime English commentary towards the end ( 5:45 onwards) describing the Sherman tank as a 'formidable weapon' and describing the German claim that it's armour at its thickest point is thinner than panzer armour at its weakest point as "propaganda" is itself propaganda. There is more truth in the cited German statement. There is also no mention of the weak gun in the Sherman (excluding the Firefly). The first casualty in War is truth. Be assured every government will lie to the people in time of war. 'Weapons of mass destruction' anyone?
@KB4QAA7 жыл бұрын
B: Get off your high horse. The Sherman WAS a formidable tank and performed its' job well. It was designed for different purposes than the panzers and to different requirements and limitations. Armor thickness alone is not proof of anything. In the end the Shermans supported the infantry as their primary mission and still defeated the German tanks in the end.
@barryolaith7 жыл бұрын
Hello Pelican, no high horse here, I fear you miss the point. Are you not comfortable with the concept of British propaganda? Regarding your opinion on how good the Sherman tank was, I hold a different opinion. Like any subject, it can be debated. There's no need to get angry.
@desertbootguy6 жыл бұрын
One thing is often missed concerning the Sherman. It's the fact that it was SHIPPED to Europe and you need ships, a lot of them, to carry the task. Patton in particular, didn't want bigger and heavier tanks in smaller number. A bigger tank takes more room on the boats, it means fewer tanks delivered to the front. Also, Patton didn't want to lose time training tankers on a new machine. He wanted to rush on Germany. May be for good reasons. But he got the point. As a matter of act, he didn't even want to switch to the higher velocity 76mm gun for the same training reason. It was to costly in time. He was very influential. That's why the US army had a tank that was no match to heavier German armor. Plus the doctrine. Tanks, the American ones, were supposed to support infantry. German tanks were supposedly dealt with Tank destroyers. But the Sherman had its qualities. It was faster, far more reliable than German machines and it was a match to the PZIV ...

A good amount of the Wermarcht troops in normandy were not even German but ost-truppen which made up much of the static troops defending the Atlantic wall. Panzer lehr was the best German divison in normandy. The Fallshirmjager and the SS and regular panzer divisions would be considered crack but most of the infantry and Luftwaffe field divisions had much to desire. In the end, Europe and the USA were lucky Germany was stupid enough to attack Russia. Had they not done that they would have won the war. The Germans DID have far superior weaponry but thanks to the losses suffered in Russia, they lacked the numbers to go against the sheer volume of soldiers the USA was able to bring. Hitler very early on started to believe his own fantasies of invincibility and that's what made him make stupid decisions. That and a lack of resources. The latter was the reason why the Tiger and King Tiger weren't put into production early on. Only in late 1944 was it decided to produce more but Maybach never developed an engine for those monster tanks and they had to put in the same engine the Leopard tanks had which was way too weak to get the Tigers to drive at a decent speed, especially in rough terrain, where the Tigers barely got to a measly 5mph...

The Germans spread themselves far too thin and didn't have allies with enough resources, ability or in some cases......heart. Germany almost single handedly fought the entire world and if the US never got involved, they very well may have won. Even with the fact that Hitler had lost it by the end and gave orders that only got more of his own troops killed, they still almost pulled it off. These are impartial remarks, as I am glad we won the war but the truth is the truth.
@AlexNicholls.5 жыл бұрын
Same could be said if the Soviets or British weren't in the scene, it took a combined effort. In the end the Americans got involved for the same reason the British did; they knew if they didn't go to it, it would come to them. Well it did come to them at pearl harbour I suppose.
@notsosilentmajority15 жыл бұрын
@@AlexNicholls. The Brits were basically involved from the beginning. Churchill approached FDR many, many times pleading for the US to enter the war. A lot of people forget that Russia was an ally of Germany when they invaded Poland early on and they signed a non aggression pact with Germany. The US didn't officially enter the war until they were attacked by Japan. Many people also do not realize that the US was supplying Britain with a lot of war supplies before entering the war and that the US even sent troops to Iceland to take over for the Brits before entering the war as well. Don't forget that someone would have had to eventually take on Japan if the US didn't enter the war. Who might that have been? Germany truly may have still won the war if the US had never sent war supplies to Britain early on and if the US didn't actually enter the war. This is just trying to be impartial. The war would be over in April 1945. 10 months later. The US entered the war with no real army Dec 1942. Built an Army 1943 equipped it, sent it overseas 1943 first half 44 and it fought for ten months from this footage. Never having been stopped, not once. The war was actually over for Germany by Jan 44. It took the US all of six to seven months to utterly defeat and destroy Germany. In the East it was the same story after 1942 a constant reduction in territory and resources. It is a falsehood to think Germany could have ever won the war. There is far more to war than what tank you bring or rifle you carry. In that arena Germany could never have hopped to compete.

The PershinG arrived in the final weeks of the war and saw little action. At least 1 was destroyed by a German Nasehorn tank, within Germany. Check the loss figures for Shermans - easily killed by ALL German tank types , assault guns & antitank guns & panzerfausts & panzerschreik bazookas And they burned very easily.

The Sherman is like paper to RPG & Kornet antitank weapons, as is even the Abram tank.

Check film Clips of RPGs 6 other infantry anti tank weapons 'torching' tanks in Syria, in 1 case a grenade down the tank cannon detonating breech Shell, fuel & ammo locker. Check film of Hezbulla Kornets destroying Israeli tanks in Lebanon offensive. Check out WW2 Sherman losses in Europe. FACTS, EVIDENCE!! And tidy up your spelling: LiterALLY not littery.

the Sherman tank a FORMIDABLE WEAPON? lol just look at the documentary on the crew of these tanks, also available on youtube. The Allied propaganda made more deaths than anything else, lying to their soldiers, as well as the propaganda on the MG42 and many German weapons, which were described as inaccurate, realized the soldiers at their own expense that it was not at all so xD

R3nN4 The Sherman was a pretty formidable tank to fight if you were fighting it in anything but a tiger, which were very rare to be seen.

typical german propaganda film from its time. It is a good example how they have embedded filmmakers to the front.
