👆 In today's episode of Sound Like, Rabea & Matt recreate the incredible lead rock tones of Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin! With a signature tone coming from the classic combo of a Gibson Les Paul & high gain amplifier, trying to replicate his unique approach to phrasing, vibrato and string bending is going to be difficult...

I play in a LZ cover band and I think a lot of people would be shocked at how well a telecaster captures the sound of Jimmy Page across a wider selection of their studio recordings. I use a Suhr antique T and leave my LP as a backup. That being said, the LP honk is a big part of his live sound - if that is your goal.

Same here sir! Play in a Zep tribute and my Tele gets a lot of work. I use it for all the early material and the slide guitar tunes. Les Paul gets lion’s share of the work, but the Tele is essential.
@samuelshepard
@samuelshepard 2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickmacleod2415 the thing is that it’s impossible to tell how often he used the tele vs his modified les pauls on the records because of how many layers he uses. Sometimes you can tell and it’s obvious, but not always!

@patrickmacleod2415 2 жыл бұрын
@@samuelshepard Sure, and he obviously loved telecasters throughout his career. But I was responding to the comment about the tele being THE guitar on the "first few albums". We know from interviews and everything else that the tele was only the dominant guitar on the first album. The second album was predominately LP and would remain the dominant LZ guitar thereafter. That isn't to say he didn't still use the telecaster, as well the others in her arsenal.

I love a Friedman because the bottom end is so tight, but in this case it seems to do the tone an injustice. This amps are so high gain, that you're having to dial it back to prevent it being too much. Whereas what made tone from Page, and Angus Young, and Van Halen so good was them driving the hell out of their amps to get as much gain as they could. With the tubes wide open that's where you're going to get the power and airy headroom.
@KEEGANC

I should say that the tone for Ramble on seems more applicable, and probably the thickness was coming from the saturation you get from tape.

I'm posting this again, and again, and again, but I want to see these vids sooo badly!! Sounds Like: 1. Metallica (with Chappers, if required) 2. Avenged Sevenfold 3. Eddie Van Halen 4. Green Day 5. Jimi Hendrix 6. Buckethead 7. Brian May 8. Steve Vai 9. Yngwie Malmsteen 10. David Gilmour (redo with driven sounds) 11. Zakk Wylde 12. Paul Gilbert 13. Randy Rhoads ...Without Busting The Bank And please do some vids on how to get the signature tones from different modelling processors and amps of different budgets (and by that I mean really cheap stuff like 20 watt modelling amps to really expensive stuff like huge pedalboards).

+Jip W The Stadium Arcadium era pedalboard would kill you. I tried for a long time to build up a similar board. I gave up when I saw the cost of those damn Mooger pedals he loves so much. Did manage to get hold of an original plastic Ibanez WH10 wah pedal though. With that, a DS-2 and maybe a Line 6 DL-4 delay, you can get a pretty decent JF style sound. The wah actually acts like a gain pedal when it's engaged. Just leave it in one position and it boosts the signal to that lovely bright Slane Castle tone he had going.
@TheJipino
@TheJipino 8 жыл бұрын
Reverend Andrew Mills Yea the Stadium Arcadium pedalboard is the one I mean. I had the WH-10v2, the cast iron one. It really ate tone when it was off, but when it was on you can get some cool lead tones much more treble and bite than most wah pedals... Sold it though because I didn't get much use out of it, and the tone-eating part... Not sure if the original plastic one is the same in that way...

+That smelly guy on the train You really don't. They splurged. Jimmy Page doesn't play a Friedman. What's so special about the his Custom shop guitar? The Friedman is a great piece of gear. But the Jimmy Page Les Paul is purely a collector's item. I'm not saying it's bad but it's nowhere near worth the price. You're paying a lot because it's a limited edition Jimmy Page Les Paul.
@dcp10200
@dcp10200 8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Moseley In a mix this rig sounds better, for a practice friendly setup the 1500 dollar rig has the advantage of sounding good at a lower volume and is still gigable.
@JELIFISH19
@JELIFISH19 8 жыл бұрын
Doug Payne If they really wanted a Friedman, they could've gotten the Mini Dirty Shirley and went over the $1500 budget with just the head. Friedmans still sound good at lower volumes. Even the Supro Black Magic which is supposedly the amp the Jimmy Page recorded on is $1500. I personally think this is more of "get a Jimmy Page type tone with an unlimited budget." You don't need to spend that much to get close to a Jimmy Page tone since Jimmy Page plays cheaper gear than this.
@dcp10200
@dcp10200 8 жыл бұрын
JELIFISH19 Yeah true, I haven't heard a Friedman in person so my opinion is entirely based on what I heard in the video, and the fact most Marshall 100 watt plexi/jcm800 type amps need volume to sound their best. And also most of the records made in the 60's and 70's was made with whatever was available and practical to the musician (there's so much myth and lore behind the Jimmy Page rig that you could spend eons searching for his gear and sound).

Awesome video guys!! And you were totally right in going for the Dirty Shirley (instead of the Small Box)... It is an absolutely amazing classic rock machine. I picked one up a couple of months ago and I couldn't be happier. It's expensive but it's worth every penny: ultra dynamic and touch-sensitive and it really nails those classic tones (Hendrix/SRV/Page/ACDC/Sayce etc).
