"he's not a shred guy" - Billy was in a metal band called Hexxen before Pumpkins and tranferred loads of shredding licks and solos into his later work. There's metal solos all over pumpkins stuff, just with a different tone and approach.

For Smashing Pumpkins in regards to Billy Gish: Strat with regular single coils (Billy's was a 70s with flat pole pickups) while plugged into an ADA MP-1 Preamp using his Marshall JCM800 (modded to use KT 88 power tubes) as the power amp. Pretty straight forward other than some leslie type effects for Crush. Siamese Dream: Strat with lace sensor pickups into an opamp version Big Muff (Plenty of clones online) into just the JCM 800 while using a MXR Distortion II for guitar solos. As far as effects, EHX Micro Synth for the melting guitar solo effect on Today, Ebow for the infamous 40 guitar track part in Soma, and just about a lot of other ones. Mellon Collie: Strat with lace sensors still plugged into a Marshall JMP-1 Preamp utilizing an Eventide Harmonizer rack unit for his trippy effects along with other rack units and being powered by the Mesa Strategy 500 Power amp (The power amp was what gave that JMP-1 the low end...pretty sure he used KT88s in that too) as far as effects...mainly rack units and a few pedals along the way. Haven't really taken the time to check up on his recent rig but lately but that's the quick summary of it. James Iha usually had the same gear with a few different effects here and there like the Digitech Rack Unit for the solo to Zero.
@Breaker1975 жыл бұрын
Love how much you know. I've always been a casual Pumpkins listener, and remember when my friends got into melancholy back in the day. Being a metal guy that's also a recent strat convert, and kinda wanting to stick to single coils, I find myself taking more of an interest these days. Particularly, Zero is often stuck in my head. I know their crunch sound is fuzz based, and it sounds pretty awesome imo. What I'm really curious about atm tho, is what in the living hell James Iha is doing with that solo in Zero. I just figured he was doing some whammy/pitch shifting, a la Tom Morello. From watching a couple live videos though, it looks like he's using a sharpie or some kind of pen as a slide. His strumming technique makes me wonder if he uses it as a strumming implement as well. Perhaps you could shed some light here?

@@Breaker197 live, it might be the whammy setting on the Digitech rack unit set to two octaves up and he just screws around with it or maybe plays some scales. James was using that setting on other songs.

Disagree with the guitar choice as it wasn't used on any of their classic recordings. Needs to be a 70's looking stat with lace sensor pickups, or other humbuckers in a single coil form factor. I would have gone for a squier deluxe hot rails strat (even looks like the old billy corgan signature fenders). A big muff, mxr distortion +, and some kind of phaser

@rbndr7 жыл бұрын
I agree it doesn't have to be the same exact gear, but disagree they got the sound right, it sounded too muddy to me and only focussed on one aspect of their sound rather than the dreamy spaced out bits that are just as important. I just don't think it was particularly informative, Corgan signature guitar and big muff are obvious choices that people could arrive at after a cursory google, would prefer these videos go into some detail of the key equipment a band used and how it contributed to the sound, in this case 70's strat with lace sensors, and then make a case for another guitar being able to get the similar sound, the reverend guitar is very different I think. With the pedals, big muff is a solid choice, but there are many cheap alternatives that are just as good, and then they could have incorporated a phaser and delay for the more quieter parts. Could have also discussed dual fuzz pedals like the devi ever rocket that give both a solid rhythm fuzz, and the super nasal lead tone, maybe touched on his Corgan's use of the EHX micro synth for lead tones, or even e-bows. I know they have a limited budget and are limited by the stock that is in the store, but think this was a missed opportunity as the Pumpkins really had some of the best and most varied guitar textures

He showed one of his Siamese Dream Muffs with the settings still marked on it. Volume 12 o'clock, Tone 1 o'clock, Sustain at full blast. He also said he used a Phase 100 for solos with the speed all the way down and chose random settings for the intensity Lastly he also showed off the MXR Distortion II he used through the Muff on solos with the Siamese markings as well. 4, 11, 11, 2 (o'clock) As for a future suggestion, I'd say CKY. His pedal sounds during that era were USA Muff, EHX Small Stone/MXR Phase 100, Mutron Phase, reverse delay, and Octavia. He did have some rack units during Melon Collie. As you turn that down, the tone focuses and even lends itself to sounds outside its specs - Humbuckers thin out and give you that tone you wish coil-taps actually did. Cheers team!

Billy layered a lot of tracks, not fuzzes. He used the BC108 op-amp'ed Big Muff into a Marshall JCM800 that he used the master volume up all the way and used the preamp gain as a master volume essentially to keep it clean and bold sounding. No need to use 2 fuzzes, unless you like super muddy tones. Lace Sensors would have helped the sound drastically, clearing up that low end, which is what that bass contour knob on the Reverend guitar is used for.

i know Thurston Moore has a signature Jazzmaster which they no longer make so a Jazzmaster is a shout straight away
@promospray7 жыл бұрын
but you can always get a Mustang or some regular Jazzmaster (cuz "they`ve played jazz" mostly, haha) and blast it with the screwdriver or drumstick! i`m curious to watch guys playing sonic-tunes)))

Yaroslav Ra Hendrix just destroyed a guitar he didn't explore the tonal capability of an enflamed jazzmaster

Right. But, are either of those guitars Arctic White? Haha! Great sounds, and I don't even mind the use of the DSL 40 again.

Could you guys do a sounds like Josh Klinghoffer of a Frusciante ( again )
@KeeperOfPoops7 жыл бұрын
i watched the interview with Ian Sheppard (Josh's tech) and he has so many pedals to choose from and a nice marshall head set, so it's gonna be a good but expensive one
@gonecoyote7 жыл бұрын
i'd like to see a frusciante rig again, but this time they may invite mr. Dave Simpson to school them in the process.
@emilianwieczorek4377 жыл бұрын
Gonzalo Nose Llama yeah Dave is the Frusciante guy on yt and he's good too but it's also fun to see Bea and Matt do it

It may be true that Siamese Dream was released in the "Era of Grunge" but Billy Corgan himself resented the label, pointing out that the band was from Chicago. In an interview Corgan says: "We were fans of everybody. So it wasn't like being compared to something you didn't like, but at the same time we felt we were so much more sophisticated." Oh, btw I am totally going to have to get the Big Muff pi O: the sound was soooooo massive!!!! ty for putting this segment together! (
@stefanorozcomusic7 жыл бұрын
Disappointed with the result didn't even use the Siamese settings on the muff!!! Corgan made a video on his exact settings volume: 12:00 Tone:1:00 Sustain: cranked all they way Also disappointed in guitar choice wasn't even a strat with lace sensors :(
@KeeperOfPoops6 жыл бұрын
you can't get a strat with lace sensors for under 1500

Hey Bea and Matt, can you please do Sound Like Orianthi?
@KeeperOfPoops7 жыл бұрын
that'd be a good one cos it's a female guitarist and she uses PRS guitars
@SixStringsandSauce7 жыл бұрын
William Allison I don't care that she's female, she's just an awesome guitarist! Also, you're quite right. She does use a lot of PRS, and I haven't seen many (if any) Sound Like videos with a PRS.
@KeeperOfPoops7 жыл бұрын
they used a PRS on Mark Tremonti, Santana, Incubus and i think that was it
@SixStringsandSauce7 жыл бұрын
William Allison I saw the Santana one, but must've missed the others.

@KeeperOfPoops7 жыл бұрын
they have to do Eyes Of A Stranger
@rambusinek7 жыл бұрын
I will never stop begging them to make Queensrÿche until they do them. Chris DeGarmo, Michael Wilton and Eddie Jackson are masters of the tone!

'Revolution Calling' would be a great song for Bea to get his teath into.
@ElectricLabel6 жыл бұрын
Corgan used a Strat on the first three albums, Gish, Siamese Dream and Melon Collie. James Iha did most of the humbucker stuff on a Flying V and occasionally a Les Paul.
