I hope y'all remembered this bus from the '80s, it's the TTC Orion III.
Toronto Transit Commission 6360-6419, 6530-6559 were Orion 03.501 buses built and delivered between 1987 and 1989. This series of buses was purchased alongside 9530-9564, Orion II buses used on Wheel-Trans.[1] The Orion III was a joint venture between Ikarus of Hungary and Orion Bus Industries of Mississauga, ON. Ikarus provided the frames of the vehicles, and Orion installed the mechanical systems and other components such as windows and interior.
Cracks and corrosion developed in the frames rather quickly due to poor workmanship, materials, and rust proofing. Thus the buses were pulled off the roads en mass several times during their careers. After the first discovery of frame issues in 1995, the TTC placed an order with Orion for 135 Orion V 40 foot long buses, enough to replace the entire fleet of 90 articulated vehicles. These Orion V buses were numbered 7000-7134.
While all of the buses were retired by September 2000, 19 buses were rebuilt and put back into service a year later due to a bus shortage and increasing ridership. The final 19 were retired for good by June 2003. Other units were sold to OC Transpo, where they were rebuilt and lasted until 2003.
May this bus RIP :'(
Engine: Detroit Diesel 6L71TA
Transmission: ZF 5HP590
Note: Audio not mine, is from this link and it's recorded by Allen Dicion (I think): www.transithub.net/sounds.htm

I remember these on the Dufferin line in Toronto. They were my favourite to ride in. Especially right over the engine, in the front section.

Pretty tough to beat the sound of one of these taking off from st Laurent (95) on the transitway just screaming / reverberating off the concrete tune walls under the 417.....I miss these soo much. I wish there was more videos of these.

In a drag race to 100kph which octranspo orion 3/ikaras 286 were faster. Octranspo own spec with red seats or ex ttc with brown leather seats. I alway like the octranspo spec more slighty more horse power quicker off the line also better shift point rearly put out a lot of black smoke

It's a shame they had to be removed which caused the TTC to stop having articulated buses for a decade.

It wasn't better for us here in Portland, OR: at Tri-Met our 1981-82 Crown-Ikarus 286s, which used the Cummins Big Cam and Allison HT-740 (although one of them was converted to a Detroit Diesel inline 6-71TA engine, but still with the HT-740), also had numerous structural issues. Among them were the wheelchair lifts, located at the rearmost door, which were permanently disconnected in 1989 after someone tripped on one. Ours were retired for good in 1998-99.

Those buses might have serious corrosion problems but other than that they were quite well built, and were reliable. The engine and electricals were reliable. Just like 1987 Toyota Camrys were reliable but they rusted out by 1994 unless very carefully treated with rust protection.

If they had major corrosion problems then they weren't reliable period.

@@WeatherxCalipha with your logic, a late 1980s Toyota Camry or Corolla was then unreliable. However they were considered the most reliable cars. Without exceptional care a 1988 Camry in Canadian weather, was full of rust by 1995 being only 7 years old.

Rust is not the same as corrosion; it might be an attribute but rust in itself is at the result of oxidization when exposed to certain elements. Corrosion is gradual degradation and destruction which results in structural compromise. More specifically; cracks and corrosion developed in the frames and articulated hinges of the Orion-Ikarus III; are you implying that a vehicle that's has essentially had it's foundation compromised is somehow reliable? You don't need to answer that because the TTC's decision to retire almost the entire fleet within 8 years because of these circumstances speaks for itself.

The powertrain was pretty much the only thing that was reliable and hence survived on these buses; I suppose after being scrapped, they saved most of the good parts for other purposes.
