I started getting serious about making music in 2020. And I could confidently say that I learned how to make my own music while still having much to learn. I saw this video to find things that are not true about the learning process and try to clarify some misunderstandings and stuff. But this is pretty much how everything happened for me, except for a few things. I only own FL Studio Trial version, I don't have studio monitors, I don't know anything about music theory, and I don't have any midi controllers. I've been using FL Studio trial version for about 3 years, and I can say that pretty much know my way around a few things. But everything about the learning process, struggles, and issues are very accurate. For any aspiring producers out there, this video is highly recommended to get started.

also to anyone who was struggling on the same thing i was (recognizing notes and keys so that you could actually replicate songs for remixes or put the melodies you have in your head into an actual song), you should try making some remixes of songs with a lot of midi files around and practicing the notes, it was and still is the greatest obstacle in getting into this hobby for me.

Excellent presentation, thank you. And yes, you CAN record and master through headphones. I've been recording since 1961, I've met a few people who actually know what they're doing and have the ability to explain it to others. You are one of those people. Instant tip from an old timer --- run your 'master' through the nastiest speakers you can find, like 3 dollar intercom speakers. If your mix sounds good through those AND your studio monitors, you're golden. Most top pros do that, few will actually ADMIT it. Thanks again, Bill P.

Ok music theory is a tool you can use but it's not all about music theory it's about how passionate you are to create. I've created so much sitting down with a guitar when I had no idea what I was doing, when I finally learned a lot of theory out of curiosity some of the new things I made didn't sound as genuine, it might sound more intricate, but the more you treat music as an art rather than a science it becomes amazing.

Some say that M40x is better than M50x. As for more headphones, good ones to recommend are Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, Sennheiser HD280 Pro and Sony MDR-7506 A midi controller isn't mandatory if a person isn't comfortable with keyboards (although it's better to learn how to play and creativity reaches one easier than just computer keyboard and piano roll in DAW) A great video though!
@necrobynerton73842 жыл бұрын
Honestly, this video may seem barebones, but it is more than really accurate. I'm working with fl studio since 2017 and still don't have that tick to make stuff that is... well... decent to listen to and make you come back to it. Thing is, what is already said in this video is honestly how it goes, and if you get a midi controller/piano alongside a pair of studio headphones (or speakers/monitors) will definitively help in sound design and mixing department. First year, maybe even 3, you will have to spend time learning and overcoming the feeling of being stuck a bit. Keep your hopes up and it becomes cakewalk. Once over that initial procedure, once you get comfortable in using your DAW of choice and your equipment (both hardware and software like vst-s), next thing is easing your way to more music theory related stuff and playing around with them (having a midi keyboard most definitively will help, especially the ones with more keys). This is if you decide to actually get seriously serious and are willing to go forth. I don't want to sound condescending, but this is my experience, and it most likely won't be a trouble for everyone. At first most definitively you will suck, but give it time, listen to music moderately and try to pick up how the different sounds are, watch music production videos that are plentiful here in youtube to begin with, and you will prosper. What I can't say is having followers, since I don't post my stuff anywhere (sorry for this, but right now I don't want to do that, mostly for my ears right now) but I do believe having feedback will most definitively help in improving. Personally speaking, I don't have a lot of time to spend on a track, so I often am just left with an idea that gets abandoned in my hundreds of other ideas, or spend too much time patching a synth that literally end up with only a 4 bar simple "melody" (that i don't know if it even counts as one). Oh, I almost forgot - If you are a beginner that has no experience in music production, and as much as I don't want to say this, DON'T BEGIN TO TRY DUBSTEP or related genres like melodic dubstep, complextro, brostep, deathstep, etc. mainly because you will hate yourself and will have a brain hemorrhage once you do try. I know many probably won't because not many are into this genre, but I almost left for good. If you are insisting, I insist to do something simpler first then go for this stuff, if you want a bit of a challenge go for something like synthwave (if you are into this genre) since it is way more enjoyable to produce and you don't have to pull your hair out because you don't understand how things work. Seriously though, don't try to fly when you can't drive, it will hurt you. I would assume many would go for trap, since it is all the rage nowadays, and I don't think it is super hard, but can't say because (warning: personal opinion) I don't like it, so I don't go for it. But I've seen plenty of artist posting production videos, so you probably may get quicker results in your journey with this genre. I apologize for this long comment, but I do hope people at least try, It isn't impossible but give it time. I also found out about modular synths 3 years ago, and personally having a tidbit small background in electronics, that is extremely fun stuff, but a bit expensive. For those that do know their way around electronics (but absolutely not limited to), try vcv rack software if you don't know, it's free, and epic. Thanks for reading my ted talk

So glad your video came up in my search. I’ve watched others, but you’ve done a great job at saying everything needed simple to the point. I got tired of watching other videos because there’s so much unnecessary rambling. Thank you for not doing that lol. You just made me want to continue learning how to produce my music even more.

dude, you said 15 times the word DAW & Digital Audio Work station Where is my Prize? really liked the video man. When I saw the minimum spec for the PC I got a kidney Attack like, I use Core2Duo with 4GB DDR2 RAM & I got Ableton lite key borrowed from my friend & I am good with what I have. & I got an earphone to monitor. I'm even eligible to call my self as a producer?

Thanks a bunch my friend! Exactly what I needed! I'm a writer/poet by nature, but have come across hip-house music with the tone to match my content and wanted to create something in that arena. I doubt there'll be any success here for a while, but I'm chasing that euphoria of completing a song that I'm truly happy with. Following your advice to start with! Thanks again!

its kinda interesting, i am trying to start producing music for years but there are a lot of things keeping me away from that "start" u know, gaming, being lazy, work and and and.... but after your video i feel like i am already a part of it. I was writing some songtexts just for fun but u made the point of my being lazy here I think, now i am going to look for ableton or FL Studio. #justdoit

About the headphones some nice computer based headphones have applications that you can make it studio mode. I'm not sure how perfect it is just thought you should know.

Hey man thank you for the video, this is really helpful. Good vibes, thanks again and I hope all is well on your end. Cheers! EDIT: You know I have one question, which is, what's the difference between a MIDI controller like the ones you talked about and a DJ controller like the Pioneer DJ DDJ200? I am looking to just get started, completely new -- I'm not sure what I want but I know I want to have the option to mix music live, and also make my own music. Should I consider getting both an AKAI mini and a dj controller? What's the difference? Thank you again for your hard work on this vid

This industry is so flooded with men, no hate because I am a huge fan of many of them and their music. I'm currently majoring in digital media art and so I have to learn various programs for it. I've been a performer all my life as well and sing. Taught myself the basics on the ukulele, got piano lessons when I was younger. I've always wanted to explore a little in music, EDM specifically, but its a bit discouraging that there are barely any women to look up to in the space. I personally feel like I have great taste in EDM and could get the hang of creating stuff.
@SoundConstraints2 жыл бұрын
There was an interesting interview with Diplo where he said he wishes there were more female artists and wants to sign some/ is always on the look out for new acts but there are hardly any women interested in producing EDM/trying to get signed (his words) So yes the space is mostly men.. but the majority of people even interested in producing EDM seem to be men haha. REZZ, Alison wonderland, whipped cream, Lucy, and Cray (just to name a few) are all very talented female producers that aspiring artists can look up too
@Blueeyesinthesky2 жыл бұрын
@@SoundConstraints Yeah I don’t deny that, I think it’s the technological aspect and how anything to do with that was just completely dominated by men since the beginning lol🙌🏻. I didn’t know Diplo was looking for that and that’s awesome he is. And yea I also love Alison Wonderland! Its a small start but it’s a start! Maybe on my break between semesters I’ll play around with GarageBand or something and see where it goes haha

I've beena musician my entire life but always used a tascam 4track recorder. had no idea about DAWs or how to use a PC with my music making. Thanks for the jumping off points. Trying to record everything live yourself with a 4 track is very difficult

For anyone entering the space truly blind; decent headphones/monitors first if money is tight, this cannot be stressed enough. All the production gear and technical knowledge in the world will only take you as far as you can trust your reference output, so build that relationship as early as possible.
