I love Ben just getting to the point at the end there.

I saw a more recent interview with Matt Cameron, where he's asked the same question, and his response is: "Chris quit. He wanted to just do other stuff. I think he was under a lot of pressure from the industry. He was the focal point, the voice; he was that guy. Everyone wanted to interview him, everybody wanted to photograph him, you know? And to his credit he really did a great job in that whole promotion world. Better than the rest of us did. But I think after a while it wasn't fun, you know? And the great thing about our band is that we always had a great time together. [...] the last tour [...] for sure there was some tension backstage and there was a lot of drinking by people other than myself, but you know, those things happen and fuckin', it's the way it works sometimes" .

From what I heard Chris wanted to call it quits to do more commercial rubbish with Matt and left Kim & Ben in the lurch, Ben didn't know about this till late and threw a hissy fit on stage, spat at Chris and Matt, threw his bass and walked off stage, Ben was sent home on a plane and that was the last gig they done in 97. I guess for everyones ego here they are all just kept their mouths shut when I bet Kim & Ben had a few stories to tell really.

Kevin Westenberg, their photographer back then, said on his Instagram he was more surprised than anybody when they reunited knowing the things he knew about their breakup at the time- he figured they were done for good. He didn't go into specifics, but it does seem it might not have been as amicable a split as they later recounted. Most of the talk is just rumors though. I would've loved one last Soundgarden record before Chris lost his timbre in the early 2000s, but Euphoria Mourning is a beautiful record in it's own right, and looking back the more I can appreciate Chris' original "preservationist" attitude to the band. Added that Rock music was changing in 1997- the wave of kids who so enthusiastically embraced Nirvana were growing up or moving on, and it was their younger siblings turn. Lollapalooza ended that year, making way for Vans Warped Tour and Ozzfest, and a lot of kids turned to Hip Hop or straight Pop- it seems that it was time for change. I am glad they reunited for all the fans who never got to see them, but I honestly could've gone without King Animal as their final statement, because you can't compare it to what they did in their prime. It's sad, but Chris dying has now re preserved their legacy, but this time for good.

Carlo Von Sexron are you nuts? Bones of Birds and Been Away Too Long are epic. Some of the best tunes in their catalog are on King Animal.
@acarlovonsexron19946 жыл бұрын
@@WhyTheHorseface I haven't listened to it since Chris died. I'll have to give it another shot with that perspective behind it. I can tell you that when Ben put a little bit of the "Rowing" bass riff into the final feedback at the Chris it really hit home. That song in particular is haunting now in retrospect, added to the fact it was the last song on the last album.

Yeah, I always found it interesting (though I am glad I got to see them reunite) that they reunited in the first place since Chris had been on record as VERY adamant about Never reuniting or rehashing the Soundgarden thing, ever. I remember an interview from Rolling Stones that Hetfield (Metallica) stated he saw the band back stage back in like 96'ish? saying they didn't seem like friends anymore? Like suggesting that their was some sort of weird tension between the group. Like most other super talented artists-songwriters (Sting, etc.), Chris seemed like he wanted to go on an pursue more independent projects, and probably explains why he wanted to do projects like Euphoria Morning/Mourning (Love that album) and Scream (not so keen on that album) along with his acoustic solo albums, etc. And though SG eventually reunited, and though they never openly stated it was for a money grab, the reuniting always had a tinge of a money grab element to it (IE - their explanation for reuniting was always to "update" some weird legal aspect of their catalogue for their fans, which is why most of King Animal never felt truly organic, but more like, here's some old shit we had in the back, have at it! I'm SUPER HAPPY I got to see them, and LOVED their performance in The Great Western Forum in LA. Chris was in fine form as was the other guys, but I'm heart broken that Chris left us and +1 year after he's gone am still not over it. I'd be more than willing to take back any form of reuniting to have him back on this little rock with us (though maybe that's being selfish, I dunno. Still confused by all of this nonsense). I hope he's at peace, but I feel for his family.

Have to admit, I remember those old interviews of Chris saying things like SG would probably never reunite and there was no point. I remember seeing him live the year before he dropped the “Scream” solo album and he went from playing a huge venue to doing a large bar tour the following year. I think that album hurt his reputation a bit (not with me, even though I’m not a fan of the album, but I still bought it in support of him) But after that album essentially flopped and he got negative feedback SG got back together. Obviously I wasn’t complaining as I got to see SG like 5 times after 2010 along with 5 or so acoustic shows from him, but it definitely felt like a money grab or a way to get some reputation back. Oh well was fun for the fans though.

The other guys seem to be suspiciously silent. Everybody know Ben and Kim almost got to a fistfight in the last show in 1997. But well, shit happens. Maybe that just was the last drop.

I think Matt C and Ben S were the making of SG, Hiro had a funky punk style but it wasnt aligning to their direction. Badmotorfinger as a break out successful album owed alot to Matt & Ben for the rhythmic power of the album & Ben's injection of creativity in the song writing. Cornell & Kim though were the artistic visionaries in the band no doubt.

No ego. His individual musical style was more diverse than grunge guitars. One thing is trying all sorts of things on his own, which is fun, than to collaborate with a band. If you ever heard "part of me" you know that does not fit in Soundgarden.
