They were the best rock band of the 90s, and the best of grunge. Alice In Chains was cool because it had Layne Stanlley and today Jerry Cantrell can't hold it together, SoundGarden is one of those bands that with RARELY exceptions ALL the members are top level musicians, just like the Beatles or PinkFloyd, where all the members were talented and multifaceted. The bassist (Ben Shepherd) is a monster, the drummer (Matt Cameron) is a killer, the guitarist (Kim Thayil) is breathtaking in the tuning and complexity of the riffs, and Cornell sings like a God of Olympus, as well as playing very well, it's a band that has everything in terms of music, composition, chords, sonority, it's like a classical music show where the Maestro is rock n roll.

For me I love all what were seen as the big four "grunge" bands of the 90's. I don't think you say there is a best one, as they all had something unique to offer and were equally talented (albeit in different ways). For me, Pearl Jam is my favourite but they were all great, such a tragedy that only one of those four amazing singers are with us still. RIP may your music live for eternity 🤘🎸

Douglas Staggs I saw them in July/14 His voice has matured. He's lucky he can still belt it out. Robert Plant could not even reach these notes at his age. Chris quit smoking, drinking and doing drugs in his late thirties. You really cannot expect someone to sound as they did in their 20's. His vocals would put a strain on anyone. Mr. Cornell has a 4 octave range, which is in itself a major accomplishment.

No amigo. Saludos.
@silvercoke110 жыл бұрын

The Cult played Argentina recently and the crowd knew every song and sang along to every song and generally went nuts! It was an incredible show! They’re not jaded or bored like Western audiences! And Chris screaming Save Me! I wish someone would have done exactly that! Another great singer gone and from what I could tell about him he seemed to be a really good guy! That makes his loss even harder to take. There’s plenty of jerks, assholes and just plain evil people that I wish would drop dead but they go on living! They’ll probably live to be a hundred! People who are slagging Chris's vocals need to go back and listen to some live Soundgarden from their heyday in the early 1990s. Even then he couldn't belt the tunes live in the same way he did in the studio (in fact I think he sounds better live these days.) You have to be a lot more reserved with your vocals live-especially when you sing like Chris-else you'd never make it through a single set, let alone a whole tour.

GuccioneAle Matt Chamberlain is a very successful session musician who now works from LA, but worked out of Seattle for a long time and became friends with all the guys up there. He's played with a bunch of people (check his Wiki,) including Pearl Jam for a short time, which is coincidently where Matt is doing his thing. Just a scheduling conflict, nothing serious, Cameron is still in Soundgarden but Chamberlain is filling in for him this touring cycle where he can't make it. jazzlive You are sorely wrong, sir. Everybody in Seattle back in the day called Matt the best drummer in town, including Chamberlain. Some get close but none play like him. That said, I'm a big fan. Chamberlin is more fluent over many genres, but Cameron is more adept within his confines of the prog/jazz influenced rock he perfected.
@onalyd10 жыл бұрын
Carlo Von Sexron you're so wrong. There's nothing exceptional about Cameron's drumming. He's a banger, not much creativity. A case could be made for Chamberlain as the best groove drummer in the world. "Everybody in Seattle"? I live in Seattle. WTF do you know
@acarlovonsexron199410 жыл бұрын
jazzlive Oh my goodness, sir. Am I being punk'd? Matt Cameron is easily one of the greatest drummers of his generation, the amount of combined energy, finesse, power, taste, and technique he executes in his playing flawlessly is a sight to behold. Not to mention the ingenuity and thoughtfulness he puts into recording. He's also in my opinion easily one of the most talented sticksmen to ever weave through odd time signatures in that fashion. He makes odd meters sound straight, straight meters sound odd, he makes time his bitch. And no creativity? For fucks' sake, Little Joe, Face Pollution, Rusty Cage, Beyond the Wheel, Gun, Hands All Over, Searching With My Good Eye Closed, Ty Cobb, Never the Machine Forever, Mind Riot, Black Hole Sun, 4th of July, My Wave, Like Suicide, Fell on Black Days, Let Me Drown, She Likes Surprises, Kyle Petty, Jesus Christ Pose, She Likes Surprises, Rhinosaur, Dusty, Never Named, .... That's just a good bit of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog has Wooden Jesus, Pushin' Forward Back, Reach Down, Four Walled World... Man I could go all day with this. Don't forget his extensive catalog with Pearl Jam and his side projects like the Garage Rock of Wellwater Conspiracy and Hater, to his real influence- Jazz- with his band Harrybu McCage. Matt is a great mixture of Steve Gadd, Tony Williams, Stewart Copeland, and Bill Bruford. Just listen for it. And of course he's a basher he's in Soundgarden, they cover all the bases. "Of all the Rock drummers to emerge over the last twenty-five years, few have been as consistently tasteful and inventive as Cameron." - Modern Drummer Magazine "11 Reasons to love Matt Cameron" November 2010

@nedim_guitar3 жыл бұрын
Of course his voice had taken a lot of damage over the years. It's not only age, but also the profession. He sounded great with only the acoustic guitar, but with the full band, the more screaming and high pitched vocals, those clearly sounded more challenging. He still did a great job, though. But his voice was past his prime for heavier songs. It's also a question of how the form is on that particular day.

Always surprised they never dropped a half step for Chris (though I am sure that was his choice). At 50 years old here, you can hear he's flat quite a bit but hell, he's singing stuff he sang at 20 and still doing it justice. Good show.

To all the yahoos who say Chris's voice is shot, listen to the whole thing next time. His voice sounds infinitely better at the end of the show than it does at the beginning. He's getting old, so he needs some time to warm his voice up!

BoxCarBoy12 I saw Soundgarden live in '96, and I couldn't believe how his voice got better and better as the show went on. He was ok at the beginning of the show, but by the end it was insane how good he was.
@malcolmkettering7 жыл бұрын
I've seen them around 10 times and pretty much every time his voice got stronger and he took more risks toward the end. I remember in 1996, the last 5 songs were amazing, he was hitting every note like it was 1989.

Chris' voice is getting better but I still hate people blaming Audioslave for his voice getting destroyed, it was mostly the alcohol that he drank before audioslave that did it and you can't sing that long and sound just like you did when you started.
@CCDaDon154 жыл бұрын
Yeah Chris' vocal burn out starts pretty much in the middle of the superunknown tour. It was just at it's worst during audioslave. But there was never a moment in his life where Chris was a bad singer. Or even less than great. He just set unrealistic expectations in his early years, which is the fault of music fans not being realistic.
