That is what I thought for many months after really getting into Soundgarden. Then I heard Room a Thousand Years Wide and the ending of Searching With my Good Eyes Closed. To me, those 3 songs showcase Cornell's out-of-this-world voice the most. If I was a movie director, I would do a remake of The Three Little Pigs. One pig would be the true evil norsk hardcore elitist saying "Soundgarden is for whimps, (because) it is neither metal nor frog noises/blast beats". The second pig would be the "Ed Sheeran, Akon and Usher are much better singers since Cornell makes Grandpa music while the others got ten times the viewers on youtube and spotify" thinking ignorant. And the third pig would be the label boss ripping talented musicians off. And after hiding altogether in the brick built hut, you can hear Chris Cornell from the outside, screaming and wailing, causing an earthquake, the hut collapses, leaving them piggies buried by all those bricks.

That whole album showcases his vocals, it's great. The next song "Jesus Christ pose" might be my favourite. I count myself *blessed* to have seen Cornell do his solo show- that sh1t was incredible.... he just opened his mouth and any of his many voices would just fall out his face! o_O Ben Shepherd's bass work rarely gets the love it deserves, & that guy grooves like a futhamucka, even thru a simple drop-D dirge like this, so kudos for shouting him out here. Kim Thayil is absolutely *unmistakeable* ,his #IommiWithSomeFriendlySchizophrenia guitar work is certainly not for everyone, but Soundgarden would never have been the thing they were without his flavours in the mix imho. Personally, I love his stuff for being 100% unique. And Matt Cameron is just a machine on the drums. I wonder if anyone else has spent more time playing live drums than him over the past 3 decades?... I mean a decade with SG, then another 2 decades with Pearl Jam doing 3hr sets real regular.... and I've never seen any live footage of him misplacing a hit *ever* Can you tell they're in my TenBandsYouWouldn'tWantToLiveWithout list?! LOL ;)

@THEDavidHeretic That's fair. My only argument is that NO ONE is perfect. However, there are few that achieve the pinnacle of achievement. For that reason, I believe Cornell is deserving of a 10. Hear me out for a second here, and consider this: those of us who've studied Chris's work know that as he aged, he didn't have the same vocal range as songs such as this or "Say Hello to Heaven" (which I would love to hear your reaction on that video. It requires less stamina as Slaves, but has higher peaks), BUT his tone and vibrato got significantly better (You Know My Name). THAT, in my view, shows the growth and maturity as vocalist. Thoughts?
@THEDavidHeretic Жыл бұрын
@@fdakis I mean, everyone is going to have their opinions on perfection, and what qualifies as such. As an artist myself, I would never want to achieve perfection. I will always strive to improve and reach for perfection, however I know I'll never achieve it. And to be perfectly honest, I would never want to achieve it, simply because if I did hypothetically achieve it.....then what? Now what do I do? It will never be better than what I just created, nothing will ever possibly top it...it's literally perfection. So what do I strive for now? I would rather have that carrot dangle in front of me, and have it there to motivate me and drive me and inspire me to always reach that next level. Even if I ever became the very best in what I do in the entire world, there will always be that next level I would want to strive for, and if I don't have that next level to work towards then I would become stagnant and complacent. That's not something I would ever want, as an artist or as a human being.
