Sounds Like Hard Work 3

In this video we see many a Steam locomotive and crew hard at work be it on the climb to Shap Summit on the 1 in 75 or the 1 in 100 gradient on the Settle and Carlisle Railway . Locations and engine are as follows .One of the more spectacular climbs is of 45662 Alberta ( Galatea ) on the climb to Copy Pit summit at Portsmouth .

6233 does perform very well on occasions ,certainly the custodians go for more measured performances generally .. The first clip on Shap Wells she had bad coal . Superb selection of clips your certainly in the right place Stephen !

Great sights and sounds! Only possible of course without a diesel giving an indeterminable amount of assistance, which is the unwelcome scourge of recent steam specials.

One of the reasons the NRM will not steam Hamilton (Apart from it not being painted Apple green or Garter Blue) is that it would be duplicating an existing class on the main line. Well my suggestion is the Princess Royal Trust retire this one, bring back Princess Margaret Rose which used to produce some awesome performances, and bring 46229 back. Because 6233 is almost guaranteed to produce dull uninspired performances. All the other locos in this film are brilliant.

Another factor is the likely cost of making those locos ‘mainline’ ready. The last time those locos ran on the Network the only requirement was AWS. Now there is multitude of new technology including TPWS, OTMR and GSM-R equipment that cost a fortune to purchase/hire and fit. Having said that to see them steam on a heritage line would be a compromise but better than nothing. I think it’s a shame that 46235 ‘City of Birmingham’ is sat in a museum with there being no prospect of it ever steaming again. ☹️

Totally agreed. I’ve never understood why 6233 always seems to underperform; it’s totally eclipsed by the Royal Scots!

Thanks for the non swivelling camera work, you missed some good footage. And is this the LMS show? No LNER, SOUTHERN or GWR? Don't they work hard enough for you.

Thanks for the advice Colin. Out of all of the shots only was a possible pan around as the rest were not worth it just to get a tree in the shot and nothing else. As for LMS that’s just how it worked in part 3 but part 4 will have a wider selection of different regions.
