3BO: Set Etiquette - Sound Speeds

Quite possibly one of the most difficult concepts to grasp is set etiquette. This is because in order to learn it, you have to be on set and by then... you had better know it. Well, at least the basics.
In simplest terms set etiquette is how you behave on set. Forget about the collective film-making process you learned in film school, it doesn't apply here! Sure, making a film is a team effort but you won't last until lunch if you do some of the things you learned in film school.
In this video I go over the basics of set etiquette including key tips to success that are critical for the green. As the sole representative of the sound department on set, having a solid understand of set etiquette is a necessity for any boom operator.

Curious to know: What are your thoughts on a Boom Op asking lighting for a courtesy? I've heard stories of Directors getting annoyed at Ops constantly asking for a courtesy (I imagine in that case they were an irritable Op) but I've always tried to go with lighting's flow.

If you need it, you should have it. I'd start by asking a DP for help and show the issue you're having. Hopefully he/she will have enough experience to resolve it. They'll call in a flag or something of it's needed.
