Producers expect that everyone on a film set will magically be able to do their job without question. For us in the sound department, we need a lot of help if it's noisy. Anytime you're on location, and even when you're not, you have to deal with noisemakers that cool things. Sometimes it's a deep freeze keeping meat frozen, sometimes it's air conditioning units keeping the Director and producers happy and sometimes it's a refrigerator keeping wine cold for the restaurant you're shooting in. There are ways to handle them and in this video, I'll be talking about just that.

Another great talk on controlling the environment. Thank you very much! Another thing to think about is device fans, such as computers and some audio equipment. I recently did a shoot at a bar where one of the loudest things on location was a pair of audio amplifiers' fans screaming dissonantly! There was also a computer that was responsible for the cash register working on the other side of the building as well, for the same business, but thankfully that didn't make much noise. Also, the pumps for beer taps are a relatively common nuisance. They can sound very similar to refrigeration equipment, but they'll get loud from time to time. Some businesses can be reluctant to turn them off, which just means I should learn more about them.

I always send detailed requests to all location reps after tech scouts, and stay in communication with them throughout the tech scout on items that will need pre planning. An email with dated attached document is critical, so you don't look like your throwing something on production on the day. It's all about good communication and pre planning.

Some businesses play an endless loop of white noise in their offices. I think it was Curtis Judd who encountered this and had to provide audio for a corporate video with that white noise running. Would be interesting to know specifically how he worked around that challenge.

Robert Linthicum Yikes. If it were me... white noise sounds like a raised noise floor and if they wouldn't kill it, I'd do my mix hot and process it out as normal.
