Not just timing. Variation in frequecy range according to the expectation of a certains amplification by the ear can also give clue of position in 3D space. There are some video on some science channel that had fun putting some play doh on their ears lobes and compare how well they could place object being blindfolded. By changing the shape of their ear lobes, the way sound is amplified changes. For some, you could end inverting sounds coming from in front and behind or above and below. The brain is doing a lot.

The thing about practice and fooling the brain. I try listening to music with eyes open and closed and the difference is really big, even on an iem.

What about binaural tuned to your HRTF? That way you get the true sense of space when using headphones when your environment is dead (no reflections/added noiss). Also for open backs, wont music come out from the rear of one side and get reflected in the room and enter into the other ear cup and give additional cues, skewing the actual imaging?

Timing. Spot on. For me, this is a quality of headphone playback that matters to me. And even tho I cannot claim to know perfect timing, I know I'm looking- so to speak, for this quality. The same goes for speaker set up. I sort of know that the room is capturing sound in areas and it will sound congested ...er, somehow.

So how does Sonos sense the room and adapt the output and does that actually work in your opinion. I’d love some active KEFs for simplicity in my loft office.. with 3 small windows.. is there a model online or an app to figure out acoustically how good or bad a room is?
