Gullfoss maybe is the best and most usefull plugin I ever bought!
@ΝίκοςΠιτλόγλου6 жыл бұрын
After understanding Gulffoss, soon it became one of my favourite tools in mixing & mastering(always using it in little doses). Check the 2 filters where you can exclude areas of the spectrum. Well said man, it's not Snake Oil! Thanks!
@Dot_je5 жыл бұрын
Check the red line on the left & right side, it should allow you to limit the gullfoss range. (low & high freq)

I find a little goes a long way with Gullfoss - I often just use the tame setting - about +15 to 20%...on most material it just opens everything up and sounds better...
@AspenTruth4 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love watching your reviews. I hate cracking manuals at times, but - understanding a few basic principles of any interface before one twists virtual knobs (or sliders) will help tremendously.
@ThomasCremier5 жыл бұрын
You can drag your pointer to create a low pass or high pas filter so Gullfoss won't affect the low and high frequencies 😉
@niklassilen43136 жыл бұрын
You can use both tame and recovery at the same time. That's why there is a BIAS control there. It biases in border cases between taming or recovering frequencies (Exactly what it says in the manual). You also didn't explore the filters that limit the operation range of the plugin. Soundtheory have also said on Gearslutz that they are making a "pro" version of this thing with a lot more control.

I only discovered this today and I'm amazed. EQ'ing is the hardest part for me, especially dynamic EQ, and this sucker does all the dirtiest work on its own. Exciting times. I had to come and search for the Snake Oil episode, I knew it would have one.

Ha! @ 1:20 is why I love this channel. That cut to the full screen of you saying "I'm neither of those" with that genuinely confused look on your face was so well done. Hilarious! Great info, your gut instincts are usually pretty right on, I've discovered a gem or two (this one is giving me plugin lust!), learned a lot, and get great entertainment value. Definitely on my list for Patreon as soon as I'm able to do that on the 1st. Will have to start small, but will increase my contribution as I'm able to start doing more work again. A+

I LOVE GULLFOSS!!! The best tip in using this GREAT plugin is don't listen to the manual when they say it should be the 1st plugin on your mastering chain....NO...it should be the last plugin on your master buss chain. This plugin is a dynamic EQ really and it cleans everything up nicely.

i have two eqs (1073 then pro q) ssl comp then this then limiter last, so not last, but def not first i agree with that
@fluctura6 жыл бұрын
@White Sea Studio Actually, you have control over it. Left and right in the graph are red borders. You can drag them to limit the frequency range (band) affected. e.g. only 500 to 2000Hz. Now, set your settings for this range. If you need another band modified, add another plugin instance in row. So you can have as many Gulffoss EQ's as you want and multi-band is perfectly possible.
@fluctura6 жыл бұрын
And wow, then the thing becomes powerful... limit frequency range from 20Hz to somewhat 90Hz, Tame 50%, Brighten -10% and Boost 6dB and wait for a kick. Wow. It leaves the mix "as is", until the bass signal comes it. Only boosts a signal when it is playing (realtime). I start to understand what the thing is doing.. you could do the same thing with a standard EQ, but you would need to automate it. It also balances the mix... so when the bass is boosted it also levels the other frequencies to keep "sounding good"... interesting. Seems to have a psychoacoustic model in it's algo

Glad to see you did a video on this. I'd like to think I was the first one to suggest it to you. If I understand it correctly, the BIAS should get you closer to what you want to control, but also as someone else has already mentioned, you might like to look into the Sonible Smart EQ too.
@NapalmCandy5 жыл бұрын
Did you another video of Gullfoss as you said on this video?
@ignite1376 жыл бұрын
This thing is more acting like Sonible Smart EQ (which i own). When you click the magic staff on that EQ it does the same handling at first site.. Although you got more and immediate control with Smart EQ, and better results..
@rikkardo19806 жыл бұрын
I think the same...I like Smart EQ because you can do your fine adjustment after, so I use as a guide but then I can still follow my EQ idea
@VagendaAdnegav6 жыл бұрын
The main difference that I see between Smart EQ and this EQ is that this EQ is constantly adjusting itself in real time to the content. Smart EQ makes one analysis and executes a static answer that you can dial in from.
@dickiedicksma13896 жыл бұрын
Completely different beasts if you ask me( and I have both, even the latest version 2 and the LIVE version). Gulffoss uses a model of the cochlea to shape the sound , I can't find any reference to a model in Smart-EQ just "presets" for certain types of instrument or vocals that are then "strived for" by the dynamic eq part, but maybe that's hidden somewhere in Sonibles Webpages or manuals... But it is in no way the 100 times per second that Gullfoss does its measurements ( and keeps doing it, like with Smart-EQ LIVE, but I can't find how often a second...). I think the basic difference however is in the AI model behind the two. My results with Gullfoss are way better than with Smart-EQ , which I found remarkable at the time and bought them all.

@bradbloom56492 жыл бұрын
Was just thinking you might be able to use three (or however many bands you want) instances of this, utilizing the low and hi cut/pass filters so that for example instance 1 was filtered to only effect material from 0Hz to 5kHz, the second instance filtered to only effect 5Kz to 10kHz, and the third 10kHz to 20kHz. That might be a workaround for the frequency band/eq curve manual manipulation, etc. Outstanding plug-in regardless though.

@atellsoundtheory87746 жыл бұрын
Not only for bass and treble, but also for a band. You can achieve this by moving the low-frequency range selector over the high-frequency one, which will exclude the range between the two from processing.

My problem after fiddling with the demo yesterday, having some great results and one spectacular disaster (it matters more than regular eqs where in the chain Gulfoss is), is should I just get better and better at EQ or give it up and become a Gulfoss expert? I would like to see you do the octavox and some of the other plugin's with the slate bundle... I'm interested in the ones that are not a straight emulation but still have a analog interface. They looked interesting... although I agree on the analog looki a like interface thing .. but then as someone with no much money, they are some what of a comfort to see on the screen... once I have these in real life they are going to drive me mad. Plugin's should come with skins and you can decide when you want it to look analog or when you want it plain

Nembrini all the way! Sounds better to my ears (I just installed it in PT) and while they copied the design the also got rid of the useless controls like 'Noise' 'Sample Rate' and 'Anti-Alias' that only complicated the AVID version for no reason. Most importantly, the added 'Volume' control of the Nembrini version is very useful. I expected to see a Wet/Dry control as well like the Nembrini version of the Sans-Amp PSA-1 (called PSA 1000) has. But maybe they wanted to keep it as simple as possible which makes a lot of sense. The PSA-1000 lets you distort in a very precise and versatile way. The LOFi Clipper on the other hand is quick and dirty - and great.
