Most people don't even realize that music comprises nearly 40% of a movie. This score underscores this belief with a soundtrack that is as timeless and beautiful as the film itself. I call this classic, "The Best MOVIE Of Our Lives." Brilliant, from start to finish. Btw, watch the scene when Dana Andrews is visiting the bomber graveyard... all done with mindboggling camera work and the magnificent, soaring music. Of all the memorable scenes of this film, which are nearly uncountable, this was the single greatest marriage of sound and cinematography I've ever seen. I better stop before I start babbling...

This is the movie that really made me LISTEN to a soundtrack in a dramatic film. I totally agree with you about that specific scene, it is one my favorites of any movie I've watched. The music is incredibly moving and powerful, a perfect accompaniment to Dana Andrews' amazing acting. The entire movie is a gem, but I look forward to this scene every time I re-watch it.

@@huntersun9 I think that this movie's greatest contribution is how it pays homage to the men who fought in this terrible war AFTER they came home. Most films only show the carnage during the war, not the human carnage after they returned. This film not only didn't turn a blind eye to their problems, but in the end celebrated the triumph of the human spirit, which is why it remains one of my all-time favorites.
@tiffsaver2 жыл бұрын
@@huntersun9 Only the old-time composers knew how to write movie soundtracks like this. Just listen to Miklos Rozsa's music for "Ben Hur," recorded with a 100-piece orchestra, or Alex North's supreme score for "Spartacus." These recording will truly move you. There have been many great film composers over the years, but NONE like these.

This film is a complete masterpiece in no small measure due to the magnificent direction of the great, great William Wyler. The 'greatest generation' is represented in this seminal film about what it is to belong to community and above bravery. Whatever happened to the USA and its sense of community and can-do cohesion? Absolutely tragic.
@hectorpena70683 жыл бұрын
The greatest generation's accomplishments, left the baby boom generation and the succeeding generations to follow in their moral values, respect, improvements where needed and to invent to make life better. And of course, this country greater. Instead, the hippy life, and their waste of time, and minds, which was of my generation, contributed nothing to their accomplishments. I always followed in the footsteps of my father, a world war II veteran, three purple hearts, honorably discharged. The same as myself, volunteered and served during the viet nam war. And also honorably discharged. I have always felt that I belong to the greatest generation, NOT my generation... And one more thing: This l946 picture, The Best Years Of Our Lives, IS my favorite picture.

@@frankpaya690 Well, just see how this country has developed after l963. (as well as the rest of the world) Now, after the war, i.e., l946, men, going to work, marriage, the start of the baby boom generation. The Best Years of This Country I have always believed were from l946 through l963) (Especially the fifties) Just take a good look at the music, movies, TV shows, mode of dress for both males and females. It was also much more safe for children to play outside, riding bicycles etc... NOW, just compare that life with the dangers that we now have to watch out from the sick and very evil that exit today and just continues to get worse each day. The daily news on TV is very unpleasant to watch and hear each day. How I miss the fifties and very early sixties eras...

The story, as I read it, was that Samuel Goldwyn had asked Alfred Newman to score "The Best Years of Our Lives" because Newman had scored all of Goldwyn's big films in the 1930s. However, Newman had taken over as musical director ar 20th Century-Fox in the 1940s and between runnng that department and scoring many of Fox's big films, he simply didn't have the time. However, he suggested Friedhofer, who had come to Fox from Warners a few years earlier. So Friedhofer came over to Goldwyn with Newman's brother, Emil, to create, I think, one of the great scores of all time. Thank you for providing this eloquent suite.

PTSD is present in any war. It is only called different things and looked at differently from generation to generation. World War I veterans had it and people didn’t care about them. That scene was added at the last minute of the filming. In the script, it went from Fred packing his bags to arriving at the airfield. I cannot say enough of how this movie helped me get thru my PTSD. And made me feel like I had a connection with the greatest generation, like my parents were. not to minimize my own issues, but it helped me to understand and work thru them much better. The love stories involved in this movie, and to feel what the men and women of our greatest generation went thru... no one today could make as great a movie as this was... today it would be full violence, drugs, and sex... and would never make the connection this movie did...honesty, tenderness, faithfulness and hope.

This all changed after, l963! l964, the Beatles came, long hair, thereafter, THE HIPPIES! loud music, drugs, new crime etc... I've always believed that the best years of this country were from l946 after the war, till the end of l963. THE FIFTIES, How I wish I could go back to that era. I was fortunate that I lived through all the fifties when growing up... For me, "Citation" was one of the most moving scenes of the film, when Fred's father's voice quavers while reading out Fred's Distinguished Flying Cross medal citation to his wife Hortense. How can anyone watch that scene and not get choked up and misty eyed? Roman Bohnen's portrayal of Pat Derry was incredibly powerful. You can feel the combination of both his pride in the recognition of his son Fred's bravery by Lieutenant General Jimmy Doolittle, as well as his anguish at Fred's apparent decision to leave town. *Strongly recommended to read:* In 1946 the great Hugo Friedhofer earned much success and recognition as a composer for writing the music and winning an Academy Award for the William Wyler war-drama “The Best Years Of Our Lives”. It was his well-earned step out of being a recognized orchestrator (notably for various Korngold scores) into the light of a recognized composer. In 1978 a re-recording of excerpts of Friedhofer’s magnificent score got released and although not a fan of re-recordings, I have to say it is by far one of the best I have ever heard and even Friedhofer himself gave the producers of the album “heartfelt thanks”. Nevertheless, I felt that I should go back to the original music to provide the Oscar-winning recording as heard in the movie and to make the long story short: As on our “Psycho” project a few weeks ago, the original recordings for “The Best Years Of Our Lives” got an appearance on a LaserDisc as an isolated score track. Unfortunately, the master tapes don’t seem to have survived over the years, so that isolated score track is actually an isolated score & sound effects track. So please keep in mind that some sound effects from the movie will appear during this video, but as I feel, not too many to distract from the magnificent music. Look at it as a testament and to honor Friedhofer’s skills as a composer. Special thanks go to the team at hugofriedhofer.dudaone.com for providing me with more information during the researches.

Once again my knowledge has been broadened! Fred, let me broaden your knowledge. In Cape Town, in a suburb called Rondebosch East there lives a composer - a man called Allen Stephenson who is to classical music today what Mozart and Beethoven were to classical music in their time. He has written music so lyrical it takes your breath away. He had a studio in his garden, a prefab building where he gave cello lessons. I believe his cello was a Strad. but can't be sure. Around the walls of his studio were shelves with his record collection - vinyl and CD. He had a collection of old recordings rare enough to make your teeth bleed. One evening there was a break - in at his studio. Furious that they couldn't find anything worth stealing the in breakers set the studio on fire... A lifetime burnt to a crisp... Google him, Fred - I think he's right up your street.

Mr. Yaffo is not the first listener who has pointed out the resemblance to Copland and I don't think his observation is meant to be a criticism. By 1946 Copland had staked out his territory as the master (though not the only practitioner) of an unmistakably American idiom in classical music. More than any of his contemporaries, Copland had created a national orchestral sound, and it's entirely okay to grant that another orchestral composer, trying to immediately communicate the same values of simplicity, decency and optimism within the context of a popular movie, would use this "American musical shorthand" and write in the same idiom. In my opinion Friedhofer's score is if anything a homage to Copland, but certainly not a ripoff of him.

“windstorm1000 4 years ago “perhaps the best movie theme of all time--incredibly moving--heroic, memorable and vulnerable--like the brave if somewhat broken men who came back” I reposted this, because I couldn't have said it any better, and I want more people to read it. Nicholas Stix, Uncensored

This theme song is one of my top 5 songs to match the movie in my top 5 of ALLLL TIME..Wilma and Homer's Love just was fantastic..Harold Russell who played Homer won two academy awards..Best Supporting actor and a special Academy Award for his service in THE UNITED STATES NAVY in WW2..He was wounded in action and lost both arms to his elbows..Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and Purple Heart as well as The Bronze Star..

Harold Russell lost his arms due to a training exercise with grenades going wrong. He did not receive the Medal of Honor. A great man anyway

I didn't discover this film until I was in my mid 40's about 10 years ago. Never heard of it even though it won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It's never on any top films lists, at least the ones I've seen. Yet, I had heard about Citizen Kane and Casablanca when I was a little kid in the 70's. For some reason Best Years gets ignored by many.

I can't think of any better short opening themes like The Best Years of our Lives and King's Row in the history of motion pictures.

I know get teary just looking at the title shot from the film with the opening music... I guess it's anticipation of what I know will be deeply emotional experience for me. Not sure I like the added soundtrack effects - I think the music stands on its own.
@SoundtrackFred3 жыл бұрын
Hello Loge and thank you very much for your comment! Regarding the sound effects: those are the original film recordings as heard in the movie. Over the years the music tapes became lost to time but what survived is this music & effects track. This is the only way to listen to Friedhofer's magnificent score in its original form. I wish it could be done without sound effects but the way it is presented here it is still better than nothing, right? :-) Best! Fred

I can't make my mind up whether it's this soundtrack or Joan of Arc, they're worlds apart, but either way Hugo Friedhofer's talent is immense.

Simply put, the greatest film score ever written, especially in the way it functions in the film. Today, idiot directors want sound design music - droning - not music that actually does what film music is supposed to do. They just lay on that idiocy non-stop which is why so few films today really pack the emotional wallop that this film does. All through the 50s, 60s and 70s, whenever there was a film music poll best of, this ALWAYS topped the list. Then the 80s came and that generation, unlike any other, only wanted to know about THAT decade to the exclusion of all others. It's only gotten worse since then.

So many of the greatest Hollywood composers were classically trained and were born in Europe and yet they seemed to capture America better than the people born here. Like Billy Wilder made so many good movies about Hollywood in the 30-60's, because he could see things that Hollywood people themselves couldn't see.

Unbelievably, the director, William Wyler, did not like Hugo Friedhofer's score when he heard it. He thought it was too lush for the humble story being told. It was a friend and a fellow veteran that convinced Wyler that the score was appropriate for the film.

Why don't you process the score to be in faux stereo? Granted, the purists will hate it, but for ordinary listeners, it will sound better.
