I grew up in Detroit in the 50's and 60's. Soupy Sales was incredibly popular there, with kids and adults. He had his lunchtime show, Lunch with Soupy, and a late-night show with a Tonight Show format. (I seem to recall he also had a morning show for a while, Breakfast with Soupy.) He once did an in-person appearance at TWO theaters on opposite sides of Detroit AT THE SAME TIME! They promoted it something like "see Soupy In Person along with Three Stooges films this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Fox Theater* and The Strand Theater!*" (*I don't remember the actual theaters.) I went to one. Soupy came out and did his schtick for maybe 20 or 30 min, then they showed a few Three Stooges shorts. It didn't take me long to figure out that at the other theater, the Stooges shorts were shown first, THEN Soupy made his appearance, after rushing across town. I've always felt this was ingenious!

Soupy Sales, the coolest guy ever. Growing up in Detroit in the 50's, he his well remembered. Same in the world as in the studio. Had a jokefest with him one early evening as the boys from Visitation High School were rolling down the John Lodge freeway on the way to the Fisher Theater. We spot Soupy in a Lincoln Continental in the lane next to ours. He rolls his front windows down,acknowledges us and starts clowning and going through his 12 O 'Clock Comics routines. It's a riot. Love you. RIP.

Soupy was so GREAT but this show really wasn't for kids. A lot of what he did I think went right over their heads. I remember my brother (a teenager) would practically roll on the floor laughing at some of Soupy"s "innuendos" and "double entendre". RIP Soupy Sales.
@armanddebella40417 жыл бұрын
Soupy Sales did a lot of double takes and a lot of sexual innuendo material back in the early sixties. The 'send soup pictures of the presidents thing really did happen but they gave the money back and the one time visit from a topless dancing girl are all Jems from a different time.How about the one when soupy was talking about his girlfriend peaches where he said something about that she couldn't make his Apple pie but could mak -e his banana creme.Classic.😁😁

Glad I finally got to meet and talk to Soupy when he played a club in NYC. Years later he recognized me ringside at a comedy club in LA and shook my hand. He told me about Metromedia ERASING all the tapes of his classic '64-'66 TV series. Fortunately, those shows had been kinescoped for stations then unable to play videotape and thus SOME of them survived -- along with a handful of videotapes Soupy had paid to have dubs made of (like the Sinatra appearance). Soupy was one of my idols. RIP

I was the only kid in my class who could do the "Soupy Shuffle", and it pissed off the hoods so badly, because they couldn't do it. I remember the Detroit show being piped in to WPIX (11) in New York, then going on to either New York or Philly. Remember seeing Frank Sinatra doing and walk on and getting a pie in the face? Only Soupy could get him to do it. Later his routine got kind of raunchy, and he got censored on television. Early on, it was very good satire.

White Fang and Black Tooth were my favorites but I've been unable to find a clip with Willie the Worm who lived in a tiny trailer on Soupy's table. Even when the jokes were bad the show would still put me into spasms. It was their mannerisms and their execution that was pure genius. And I'm probably not even analyzing it correctly. Thats why the show was really funny. You can't figure it out. It was just hysterical. The way White Fang screams at 1:53 reminds me of Howlin Wolf's blues growls that make your hair stand on end. Fang would have been a great urban blues singer.
@tom661214 жыл бұрын
@upquist1 --- Yes upquist. You definitely hit on something with that point about the show being subversive. The other big draw was the music. Soupy was a jazz aficionado so the tunes were top notch. But White Fangs voice was just pure genius. He could read the phone book and it would be interesting.

It's nice to see some well intended comments after seeing some of the asinine ones. The guy that insists that "Soupy sucks" after only viewing half the video needs to watch some of the others (including the bloopers) and also be informed that this WAS meant to be a kid's show. However, I also agree with the observation that, much like many other kids shows from that era (including Bugs Bunny) the subtle references and double entendre were beyond a child's understanding. And then there was the episode that got passed the censers and caused the show to be canceled... The, "How come every time I write 'F', you see 'K'?" sketch.
@n0rg5 жыл бұрын
I thought it was the episode where he said to the kids that when you're daddy goes to sleep, you sneak into his room and look for his wallet. Then you take the stuff that is green and you put it in an envelope and mail it to.... I wonder how much he actually got from that?
