Ganguly was a run machine from the mid 90s till about 2002 or 03..highest opening partnership with sachin that nobody in indian team to this date has even come closer..in odis he was actually scoring centuries faster than sachin..at 1 point I remember he was almost catching up to sachins centuries while he had played faaar less matches..it was later in the tail end of his career where captaincy really took a toll on him and on top of that he gave his position away to sehwag and he was just not made for a middle order batsman in odis..he did come back strong like the dada of old before his retirement though

Ganguly was not underrated. He became captain because he was the best performer at that time. To become captain a player has to display his talent. After his captaincy his batting record stumbled a bit and people doubted his talent. People forgot the basic thing that the best player in the team gets crowned as a captain. Also Sachin played more matches. Thats why he has made more centuries and half centuries. But he himself gave away his leadership to Ganguly. In mind he knew Ganguly's calibre.
