Just finished it. The only downside part was those Apocraylpse Horsemen meeting at an Inn near Quirm. Their conversation was hard to pick going off the head just as their horses went off our heads towards the approaching Ice Giants. The Patrician, it looks like, picked up the habit of catching flies with his tongue from his small tenure as a newt or a lizard. Funny in many ways. Dungeon Dimensions were too much claustrophobic to me. I think many key concepts, whether geographical or conceptual, were mentioned making it a good standalone book. I enjoyed it a lot. Their Klatch journey was interesting and vivid. It was very laminal and surrealistic experience. Overall 4/5 for me.

When I 1st read it I thought (as with many of the first 15 discworlds) that this was the best one so far. I'm going through the audiobooks with my son - I listen he reads. I must admit it's less funny (the one that really had us in stitches was The Light Fantastic). And it doesn't quite reach the heights of the others, BUT it does have one of those lovely moments Pratchett used to come up with occasionally: (SPOILER) Rincewind is sleepwalking about and the other 3 reflect that he looks a bit pathetic, and isn't much use as a wizard really. There's an awkward silence and Nigel says "Truth to tell, I'm not really a barbarian, you may have noticed". Conina goes second "if it comes to that, I may fall short on being a very good hairdresser" And Creosote finishes "Yes well in fairness I think maybe my poetry may lack a little something..." I don't know why that moment gets me - they've all been ridiculing Rincewind for a while, and then there's this sad moment as they all realise they're not quite what they dream of being There's also the classic Rincewind quote "Let's go" "Where to?" said Nigel "FROM", hissed Rincewind, "The important word is _from_".. I love his cowardice

As a noob to Discworld, reading in chronological order, I agree exactly with what you said. The good parts were really good but overall it felt lopsided. The Librarian was the star of the show for me and as a Rincewind fan, I had a great time during his parts. He felt like a really well fleshed out version of his earlier iterations. The writing in parts was 5 star writing for me, but overall I think I rated this 3 stars. Love watching your reviews whenever I finish a Discworld book. Glad these are still up!

Recently i was hearing the audio book of this one and stopped almost a third in because i just want to read it in real life :D so now i am looking foward to buy it,because i read it too long ago(also back then my english was very deficient) it was quite weird for me to hear the first part were granny teaches how to be a witch,! but i enjoyed the inquisitive mind of her pupil :D also if i recall correctly this patrician was vetinary but not THE vetinary,right? he was fatter and stuff?oohhh thank you for your review,you made me remember to look foward getting the book again!

Thanks for the comment! Granny Weatherwax isn't in this one, so I think you might be talking about Equal Rites, the one before. Esk is certainly inquisitive.

It was the first Discworld I read. Though my introduction was The first two of the three video games. It is one of the weakest but for me at least has happy memories attached.

3.9/5!! I’d love to know how you arrive a such a precise score. Is it a 50 point scoring system? Glad you quite liked the book though I also found the character progression weak but at least it is a short book. This book and equal rites helped merrily pass the time while flying to and from Finland last week. Thanks for bringing back Terrys books to my attention.

Ha! I always try to be precise with my scores. :) I try to make sure that I prefer a 3.9 to a 3.8 for example. I guess it is a 50 point scoring system lol. I start with a general integer score and then go from there... I'm glad the books helped your flights pass by! And I'm glad this series has helped return you to Discworld!!!

I think Sourcery is the worst Discworld novel. Not to say that it's bad, Pratchett still craps better than many other authors, but it's clear that his heart isn't in Sourcery, and it feels like a failed attempt to recapture the magic of the first two books. Also, REH's racist ideas on racial memory and genetics show up in Sourcery, and even if they show up as a joke, the joke still relies on them being true, which left a bad taste in my mouth. Going back to the series, it makes sense to me now that Pratchett chose Granny and Nanny as the protagonists for his next book, given how they were the only major characters who could carry a conversation and didn't require a happy ending override to get them into another adventure. Keep it up, ma'am. I'm looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the rest of the series. And Happy New Year too! :D
