Have you been searching for the perfect illusion net for the wedding gown you are designing? Are you repairing a damaged bridal gown and need matching fabric?
This video is for you!!
This is Part 2 in my Design a Bridal Line Series
Here's some terminology for your searches:
Types of stretch commonly available: 2 way and 4 way.
Power mesh: A strong, durable, stretchy fabric
Illusion tulle: Very fine tulle most commonly used for veils or bridal skirts
Open mesh: Netting
Net fabric: can include mesh or tulle
(these two above terms are used in very circular ways.)
Shape of holes:
Bobbinett: Hex mesh or honeycomb is 6 sided
Filet net: Diamond, 4 sided, very fine tulle.
(There are also a square & an octagonal which is rare for fine bridal.)
Gauge: The size of the holes.
Netting is made by: weaving, knitting, knotting, interloping, or fusing thermoplastic fibers
Hand ranges from soft, to stiff, to coarse
I'll add the links to any of the samples that I happened to miss posting in the video. If miss one, let me know in the comments.
Here's one- the soft cream tulle: On Etsy, the store is "shopLUXETULLE." It's their high quality, extra soft tulle 118" wide.

This video has been super helpful, along with so many others! I have been sewing for 20 years (I’m 29) but I wouldn’t say I’ve done it well all that time. I generally avoid thin, slippery, and stretchy fabric but now I’m attempting to alter my own wedding dress. Its been trial and error trying to recreate the wide tulle straps but make them durable to comfortably hold up my 34 G bust 😬. I didn’t know 1/8 bias tape tulle on tulle was a thing lol. It was a sample gown so the straps were already damaged but I’ve shredded them just trying the dress on so many times and then lifting the lace off that crawled up the straps. I appreciate the tips and just the fun personality in your videos 😊

Thank you for showing your amazing knowledge and carefully prepared videos. I am altering a prom dress for my granddaughter and had to take in the back zipper. The dress is a beautiful gown with two lace layers and two layers of lining with a small train. I am nervous about doing the front hem . It also has a front side slit. I got many ideas from you. Thank you so very much!!!

Thanks so much!! I’m getting ready to construct some gowns and wanted reputable vendors. I usually traveled to actually feel the fabric I was purchasing simply because it saved so much time. I find the hex shape is more bias-y and will stretch with the girl for sleeves. It’s also easier to build apps on. If you’re hand sewing which I usually do. I can’t get it to look as good as I want it to with the machine. I feel like you have so much more control hand tailoring it. But it’s probably because that’s how I was taught Can’t wait to order!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

For those of us who alter, design, and sew only a small amount of garments per year - I find it frustrating that finding the right fabric or supplies is so limited! I only do projects I have time to do, or to help friends - not as a for profit business. I just finished altering a gown for a friends daughter - illusion bodice with a soft cotton lace. It was a size 12 altered to size 4 - after resizing I ended up stitching the lace appliques back on - all by hand - Very time consuming! (I do not have a sewing machine that can do free motion stitching well enough for me to feel confident to sew that way.) During the whole project I found sewing on the illusion netting challenging to say the least. And the netting, stretchy chiffon type outer layer fabric, and 2 layers of stretchy (slinky!) knit underskirts around the zipper really caused some issues too. (esp around the tape with the elastic loops for buttons! All the layers of differing fabrics and weights - I broke needles and had some looping thread before I was finally successful!) 😁 Anyway - I found so many of your video tips VERY helpful - thank you so much for ALL the information you share so freely! I love your channel! Keep up the great work! 😍

I am looking for something to go under lace sleeves for a first communion dress. The bodice will be all-over Alencon Lace lined in satin. However, the sleeves will be thhe same lace but "see through." Because of the way the te lace is made, it is slightly stretchy. I wanted to line the sleeves with something soft, stretchy, and invisible because I don't want to hem the cuffs. I'll attach the invisible lining to the end of the sleeve, turn, then finish the sleeve. Anyway, I'm not sure which mesh to use (or maybe te same organza that is going over the skirt). The little girl has light skin and the lace is called Diamond White (somwhere in between bright white and off-white). Do you ave a suggestion for what I should use? I saw bobbinet and thought that might work BUT I didn't know there were so many choices until I saw yor video!!

This video is amazing!! A bit off topic but I have 2 questions regarding tulle and can’t find an answer anywhere, so if you had any tips that'd be amazing! 1. Would “new york designer fabrics- Italian nylon tulle” at 5.55 work for a sheer bodice? I’m working on a bustier design with lined cups and boning but I’d like everything else to be sheer, I’m working with tulle for the skirt so I’d like it to match, but I’m not sure if it has enough structure, should I double up? Use a less drapey tulle? 2. Do most of the sheer bodices you work with have stretch to them? Can non stretch tulle work? (Specifically, I’m talking about the main bodice pieces, not any extra illusion backs or necklines) worried that it might rip at seams if there isn't enough room for movement Thank you!!
@BridalSewing
@BridalSewing 7 ай бұрын
Test, test, test. That's probably why you can't find answers. Each panel, each dress requires a different degree of stretch and support. Typically, I do find the actual, structural pieces have little to no stretch and are usually lined with a sheer organza to strengthen it even more.
@carlruss7003
@carlruss7003 7 ай бұрын
thank you!! again a bit off topic but i'd love your input! I’ve found that tulle hits a sort of “peak” with how soft it can be, while still maintaining other qualities like stiffness, flocking, pleating, lace etc. Even the more expensive tulles seem to still have a slightly rough handfeel (unless they are very VERY drapey with no stiffness at all or stretch tulle). Since you've worked with a range of wedding gowns, I'm wondering if you found the same?@@BridalSewing

This is great info. I have a dress brought to me to be fixed. It has a hole in power mesh back bodice next to buttons. Not sure what to do short of remaking the whole back or patching and camouflaging with lace. Do you have any referrals for finding sheer foundation undergarments to wear under fitted lace dresses? Thanks for your video. Lots of great info.

What is a French Tull exactly….is it stronger? Just asking cause I Wanne make a dior inspired dress with Tull ruffles and Iam so afraid that the the skirt can’t take the weight of all the ruffles…that the halfcircle skirt could be ripped….or do u think a normal fine Tull could hold the wait?
