Sewing flower girl dresses for my twin granddaughters, 2 1/2 yrs old. The dresses are satin with a layered overskirt of embroidered tulle with an embroidered scalloped edging. I've sewn difficult fabrics before but really don't want to mess this up - I know ripping out mistakes will not be an option. I'm especially concerned about what happens when I get to the zipper. I'd like to use an invisible zipper if possible; I may try to do a test sample beforehand to find out what can go wrong.

@WonderFilThreads4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. We would actually recommend extending the fabric using a French seam. This is a way you can hide the raw edges in a little tidy pocket that looks professional. We actually have another tutorial showing you how to do this here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHSYiX2GqsljnNU

A regular straight stitch will work just fine. Just remember to decrease your stitch length, especially if you're using the 80wt or 100wt thread to sew with .

Thanks so much for the video! Beginner sewist and I'm trying to glean as much education as I can before I pursue making my wedding dress! I have a general idea of cotton voile as the lining, silk dupioni if I can afford silk (if not, then polyester dupioni perhaps), dainty floral printed chiffon or organza (torn between a couple patterns). On the fence atm about an off-white overlay to make the printed material seem even more subtle. Also debating on which color dupioni. So many choices! Trying to keep the design relatively simple, but hopefully forgiving-a circle skirt, which may or may not have a train, and ruching the sheer material over the bodice of dupioni, so as to hopefully mask imperfections in the construction of the bodice. I'm also debating whether to have the central dress with no train, just a circle skirt. But then have the sheer fabrics as their own skirt with train. So many choices! Wish I had the skills to sketch my ideas.

How do you finish the raw edges of seam allowances in tulle? Thanks

You can always sew your seams in a French seam which hides the raw edges in a pocket, or you can serge the edges using the same threads featured in this video.

Hello, do u know does Heavy Duty machine will work better on light weight fabric? I have Singer 7285q it wouldn't move suck on bottom.😫I had just learned sewing during this pandemic to make facemask 😷
@WonderFilThreads4 жыл бұрын
You don't need a heavy duty machine to sew light weight fabrics. If the fabric is sucking into the machine when you are starting to sew, you can try starting a little forward and then backstitching to cover the area behind, then sewing forward again. Sometimes there isn't enough stability at the very end of the fabric, that's why it gets pulled down. Hope this makes sense!

1.8 what? What is the unit?
@WonderFilThreads4 жыл бұрын
1.8 refers to the stitch length in millimeters. Most machines have it set at 2.0 as the standard stitch length, so lowering the stitch length to 1.8 is shortening it to 1.8 mm.
