"The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Lieutenant Col. Jason K. Fettig. www.marineband.marines.mil/
John Philip Sousa actively composed over a span of nearly sixty years but it was during his time as leader of the Marine Band followed by the early years of his leadership of his civilian band that Sousa wrote some of his most famous marches, those that earned him the title “The March King.” His most famous composition was written during this time, conceived while he was abroad and the product of homesickness caused by his nearly constant travel. Since its première in Philadelphia on May 14, 1897, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” has secured its place as the most popular and widely recognized march of all time. It has captured the spirit of American patriotism perhaps better than any other composition for more than a century. Former Sousa Band members testified that, during the popularity of the Sousa Band, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” was performed on every concert. Audiences expected, and sometimes even demanded to hear the march and eventually began to stand upon recognizing its opening bars as if it were the national anthem. It didn’t succeed in becoming the national anthem but, in 1987, President Ronald Reagan signed an act of Congress designating “The Stars and Stripes Forever” the national march of the United States.

What a happy memory you made, marching w/ your grandbabies! I think they will never forget such a wonderful grandma!❤ The first time I remember singing was in church with adults towering above me. Everyone was standing & all I could see was the back of the pew & their backs! But I thought it was the most new & wonderful place in the world. 🕊

In his 1928 autobiography, aptly entitled "Marching Along", Sousa related that he was on vacation in Europe when he got word that his band's manager Blakely had died. The march composed itself in his head during the voyage home, to finalize arrangements for an upcoming tour. The 1952 movie took a liberty with this: an epidemic of some sort sent him to sea.

Can anyone explain to me why Sousa hated French Horns? Basically in every march the French Horns play the intro and the dogfight sections, but everywhere else, they are turned into a rhythm section. Playing nothing but afterbeats or some rhythmic da da dat repeat. Annoying

I’m not sure, but I’ve seen the bassoon part for King Cotton, and the same can be said for them too. It’s really a shame because both French horn and bassoon are beautiful instruments.
@soooooowhat4604
@soooooowhat4604 7 ай бұрын
I can explain. there are two ways you can think of this. one way is like a gun, the low woodeinds and low brass (sometimes bass trombone or trombone 3 and euphonium is doubling tuba( being the 1 and 2 being the trigger and the horns being the two ands being the shot. the other way is military march form. low woodwinds and brass being the left (the initial step) and the horns being the right. Now, it 3:42 is limiting these instruments to these roles good. No. but is it used a lot because of tradition. yes.

this march is performed by many musical groups around the world and many of them change it up or shorten it. perhaps they think it will be better if they leave out a little something here or there, or they interpret it their own way, but that is a huge mistake. an original, full, and true rendition is the best and only way to perform this march ! i was so pissed off when keith lockhart, the anointed hip boy genius who replaced john williams as the conductor for the boston pops orchestra, decided to do a disjointed and shortened medley of sousa marches on the iconic and traditional 4th of july concert on the esplanade in boston. he would bring in featured 4th acts like cyndi lauper, which left out any listeners over the age of 30. i like cyndi lauper, but this was a show for all ages, not just hipster wannabes like keith lockhart. by herself on july 5th, she would have her own huge crowd, but on the 4th of july show, little keith left half of the crowd saying -- cyndi who ? then he mangled the music for the fireworks, including the 1812 overture.

Well as the story goes, during John Philip Sousa's and his wife's memorable visit to Italy, the humourous Italians claimed that "The Stars and Stripes Forever March" was arranged by a well-known Italian composer named "Giovanni Filippo Sousa". This just goes to show that music can bridge the gap between different cultures and bring people together, no matter where they come from.
