Van Riebeeck landed at the Cape in 1652 and for the next 350 years racial segregation and discrimination favoured Europeans (whites). In 1948, racisim and discrimination was formally written into law, and the apartheid system's key objective was to undermine and restrict the cultural cohesion of "non-white" communities. Then - literally overnight (April 1994) apartheid vanished - leaving the majority in limbo, ignorant of democratic principles and having been deliberately denied of any meaningful education, were unable to determine good governance. Also - for 350 years, the entire economy was developed to benefit whites (including the various colonial masters that preceded the Nationalist government that ran the country since 1948). Legally (SA apartheid law) black and other non-white South Africans were not allowed to benefit from the country's resources or economic infrastructure. Mandela did his best to handle this awful socio-economic maelstrom, but his successors were quick to take advantage of the country's riches for their own personal benefit. The result has been disastrous for all South Africans (regardless of race). I lived there for 45 years - left in 2002, and - looking back - am mow glad I left.

Once the ANC took over, SA began degenerating at an ever-increasing rate. This is typical of the former British colonies in Africa largely due to the tribal mentality of the native blacks. You can criticize me for saying that all you want, but just because the truth is inconvenient, doesn't make it less true. Now they are openly trying to drive away the whites that have lived there for several generations. Look at what has happened in the former Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, for a what happens when they are ultimately successful. Joe, South Africa has been struggling since the end of Apartheid. An almost linear degradation of civic culture, responsible government and accountable citizenry. Yes, apartheid was a horrible system for the non-whites, but it was not replaced with a better system. The new ANC system was utterly corrupt, and was also racist against a white minority. This state of affairs only got worse over time, and it is now basically a failed state. The black majority has too much pride to let the whites back in and help them, teach them how to effectively run a country. South Africa is 80% on the way to becoming a typical sub-saharan African country. In some ways far worse than countries like Kenya and Nigeria, that at least attempt to effectively run their economy and domestic affairs...

@brunosmith69253 ай бұрын
A fact that many choose to uncomfortably ignore is that apartheid (and the discrimination that existed for 3 centuries before 1948) was deliberately designed to deny the majority a proper education, meaningful participation in their own and scoiety's affairs, participation in the economy (only whites benefitted under apartheid), and finally, to "divide and rule" (a tactic the Romans used 2000 years ago). So... to expect people (overnight - April 1994) to understand the principles of democracy, civil duty, social responsibility and the operation of a free-market economy, is akin to asking a chimpanzee to perform open heart surgery. The dearth of knowledge and experience of operating in a modern democratic society was then exploited by a tiny handful (which is growing) of criminals, who discovered that grabbing the country's wealth for personal gain, was relatively easy to achieve. I'm not making excuses for the mayhem in SA right now - but the core cause of it was apartheid and all that went on before it from the time the Dutch colonised the Cape in the 17th century.

To a large extent South Africa has been living off what was built up before the end of apartheid. Not much has been added to its infrastructure in the last 30 years and now that failure is coming to a head. Because the countries political power structure is dominated by Black socialist leaning politicians, a change of faces at the top will not change that political power structure. In the next 30 years South Africa will become indistinguishable from the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. It will be a "basket case", relying on handouts from America and European countries and international charitable organizations to provide even a "hand to mouth" existence for its population. And a substantial part of that foreign charity will go directly into the pockets of the Black politicians who will continue to "run" the country.

The current black population of South Africa migrated there from the tropical region to the north. Throughout their evolution in this region there was no requirement for the natives to prepare for a harsh winter or periods of dearth. Black Africans have never needed to think very hard, or develop a concept of the future, and most African languages do not have a word for future. No word, no concept. Intelligence and forward planning had survival value for Europeans facing harsh winters, but not for black Africans. This I suggest explains the lack of maintenance of infrastructure and the priority given to instant gratification over long term investment.

I lived next door to a Power Station there, and over a 2 year period my family had no power for 8 months out of 24 months. So annoying seeing the Power Station's 1000 lights on while all the houses next to the station sat in darkness. My generator cost a fortune to run in petrol. But its not just the poor maintenance of Power Stations. Its the massive wide spread cable theft, transformer theft, broken roads that coal trucks had to navigate and were actually the cause of the bad roads, stolen coal rail lines (and believe it or not stolen coal trains - yes I worked for Eskom and had meetings where they complained about whole coal trains disappearing), transformers that blow due to constant load shedding, and municipalities that dont pay their electrical bills due to corruption and locals not paying bills etc. This was a big part of why I left SA... oh and yes I lived on what was considered the worst road in SA which was 15km long road made purely of potholes due to coal trucks - got sick of replacing the wheels on my car too - this road looked like the moon with all its craters LOL. Poor power supply also caused civil unrest, we lost 2 municipal mayors in our area due to assassination over lack of electricity (and water since electricity pumps the water into town water tanks). Also had several drive by shootings right in front of the entrance gates to my local station. Also we had large protests that blocked three neighbouring towns due to no power... they blocked roads with burning trees that they used tractors to drag onto the roads and put rocks all over the roads and lit up 44 gallon drums full of flammables and burned tyres. According to local police, a lot of the destruction caused to the distribution network and rail lines were caused by neighboring countries. For example our local rail lines were stolen by foreigners driving trucks in cross border, loading up rail lines into these trucks and driving back over the border. A big portion of cable theft is driven by foreign copper cartels. And many of the protestors were informal settlers many of whom are illegal immigrants. So problem made worse by South Africa having infrastructure that many countries on that continent don't

I watched a South African university classroom erupt in laughter when the single white student in the room denied that a tribal chief could cause someone to be struck by lightning using magic. Every single black student in that room believed in magic. At the college level. That's WTF is going on. After decades of apartheid and white rule, the natives still believe in their ancient superstitions rather than science, technology or engineering. Africa will always revert back to the ingrained patterns that have existed for hundreds of thousands of years. You can't fix that, and you probably have no business trying to impose Western enlightenment on it. As the line from the movie goes - 'Africa always wins'.

If you were to start your analysis 50 years ago until today, you would see the start of the difficulties, and you could describe the slow and steady decline after the start of its decline. Now, the circumstances of South Africa are so corrupt and so entrenched that it will probably end up as a failed state due to the legal enforcement of circumstances that are contrary the circumstances necessary for South Africa to see success. South Africa is a miniature Russia in terms of how it operates. The legislation basically forces businesses to take an oligarch onto its staff. Additionally South Africa trends towards Russian and Chinese style in economic policy. Crime in terms of assistance packages being stolen is massive, and does not appear in the statistics. This is possibly the most telling thing about South Africa's economy. It would be a good audit to see: how much of the funds arranged by South Africa actually gets to be used for the purpose. As for the election its about as honest as an election in Russia. There is no doubt that the ANC will retain power and there is no debate on what will change because nothing will. Historically governments in South Africa change every forty years and seldom without a body count. this trend will probably continue.
