South Korea Metal Week comes to close with the band Seotaiji.
Jeong Hyeon-cheol (Korean: 정현철; born February 21, 1972), better known as Seo Taiji or Seo Tae-ji (서태지), is a South Korean singer, musician, songwriter and record producer. After dropping out of high school to pursue a music career, he rose to become one of the most prominent and influential cultural icons in South Korea, with many referring to him as "the President of Culture".
Following a brief stint in the heavy metal band Sinawe, Taiji formed Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992 with whom he found immediate success. Their style of music, dance, fashion, and self-presentation resonated with the young generation-termed the sinsedae, "new generation." They incorporated elements of popular musical genres from the West and contributed considerably larger to Korean pop culture and Korean pop's development in the 1990s. His songs addressed social and political concerns of the youth including the stressful and stifling system of education in Korea, and the rage of youth in the face of poor social and economic outlook.[Widespread youth backlash to government suppression of the social commentary in his music became a catalyst for the abolishment of censorship of Korean popular music lyrics. His career paved the way for free expression in Korean pop music. Although he initially announced retirement upon disbanding the group in 1996, Taiji released his first solo album two years later and continued his successful career.

I was also shocked as a Korn/Nu Metal listener when I fist saw this video around 13 yrs ago. Didnt know they had NuMetal down there in South Korea, actually this artist seo taiji is more of a multi-genre artist so he plays all sorts of music, but when he did do Nu Metal, he did it good.

In Korea, there was talk that 'ultramania' was similar to the music of 'Limp Bizkit' or 'Korn', and some even said it was plagiarism. And in an interview with Limp Bizkit, who came to Korea to embarrass Seo Taiji at a Korean broadcasting station that hates Seo Taiji, he played the 'ultramania' CD. What's interesting is that Limp Bizkit, who heard 'ultramania', said, 'It's different from their own music, it's very original' and asked for the CD and took it with them. And in 2008, he was invited to perform at a concert hosted by Seo Taiji. korn was also invited to perform at a concert hosted by Seo Taiji in 2004.

Omg, Thank you for enjoying the song of a singer I've admired since I was a teenager. Taeji was one of the people who diversified the genre of K-pop at the time, which later influenced many Korean musicians. The 6th album containing this song is still one of the best albums of his work career. I think it'd be good if you could react to more of his songs:)

Hello ... Seo Taiji is special in that he inadvertently ushered in a whole new music industry & market in modern-day South Korea called Korean Pop, or K-Pop. As others may have commented, he was already a rock musician since the mid 1980's but then developed a new band called "Seo Taiji & Boys" in the early 1990's & used that platform to make music in the style of hiphop+rock in the early 1990's. This caught the attention of the Korean youth of that period. Before this period, South Korean music was mainly ballads & trot (trot is a style of Japanese & American influenced music). Not only that, but he used that platform to also do commentary on the socio-political issues of the day in SK, which included pre-censorship on music. This put some backlash on him from those in power to which it caused him career risk & some censoring. That type of rebellion is what additionally caused him to be famous. Whatever the case, this whole new genre of hiphop+rock was something new to SK. Or if was already there, Seo magnified it a hundredfold. After disbanding the "Boys" band 4 years later, he went to the States for a couple years & then returned to SK after & started doing NuMetal & Alt.Rock. These music videos you are watching, including Ultramania, are from 20+ years ago. He is hailed as the Father of K-Pop & there would be no such bands as BTS & Blackpink if it wasn't for him. If Taiji is the Father, then KPop is his child. It's the butterfly effect. As you might already be aware of, BTS is the biggest most popular group worldwide for these last few years, with around 30-100+ million fans worldwide. The irony of this story is that while Taiji is predominantly a rock & metal musician, K-Pop is not, it's more hiphop, R&B & pop, hence the word "K-Pop". And that was because of his "Boys" band. The other irony of this story is that the groups that have come out of KPop for the last 25 years are now much more famous & known than he is globally. Taiji is still more or less musically active for the past 2 decades, offering concerts within South Korea, although he is also known in Japan, SE Asia, China & Russia. You can find more of his stuff at his youtube channel SEOTAIJI. Unfortunately most of his stuff do not have english captions, although some other channels will edit in captions. Hopefully you can react to more of his stuff including live performances. He does more styles than just hiphop & metal, such as ballads, EDM/electronic/synth & symphonic-orchestral mixed with rock/metal.

you have to understand the context of this guy (Seo Taiji) to kind of appreciate what he has got going on. He is pretty much THE guy that brought every new genre of music to Korea throughout time. Starting as a boy band, Seo Taiji&Boys (LOL), back in the 1992 he was making "pop" music with lyrics that were considered counter culture and very much taboo in conservative Korea. He was singing about how fucked up the school system is and describing it as an industrial factory that just produces disposable goods (graduates) with pretty packaging (degree). He was also singing about lessening the tension between South and North Korea. All of these were very much taboo back then and he was demonized by the media but loved by younger generations. Then he disbanded this very popular boy band and went away to California. No one knew what he was up to but he came back in late 90s with hiphop. Which once again was very controversial as conservative Korean media once again demonized him for bringing such music. And again, he was loved the the "new" younger generations. He then disappeared again. Came back with Korn like metal music in early 2000s. Which was very new in Korea as metal/rock scene was very much underground as KPop was and still is dominating the music scene. This Ultramania was one of the song. After another success with new genre of music, he disappeared again. Then came back after couple of years with alternative rock. Basically, he brought boy band, hiphop, metal, alternative rock, etc genre to Korea. It's really divided in Korea if people like his music or not. But no one will deny that he kick started all these genre in Korea and is regarded very high for that. He is also known to be a vampire(lol) as he literally have not aged since first time people saw him on TV in 1992. He was heavily censored for most of his career yet no amount of censors was able to kill his popularity among youth.

If you listen to Seo Taiji and Boys "classroom idea" you will hear numetal type sounds that predate korn's self-titled album by 2 months. Though it is possible Seo Taiji was aware of that sound as it was coming up because he was pretty in tune with the sounds from the American scene before it became mainstream here as he was already a metal bassist. I don't really like to think of his career as inspired from America, because that makes it sound like he wasn't involved in creating this fusion of sound in his own right

There is some interesting stuff in Korea, though in my opinion it's mostly in R&B. It's not heavy, but I'd recommend The Volunteers - the singer is most known a successful solo pop singer, but she also sings with this rock band. Personally I think their studio music is over-produced, but their live music is good. eg: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnmoZpmKrNBrorc

Seotaiji is the guy’s alias pronounced SUH-TAE-JI. He had once admired by young Koreans before internet was widely used in KR, but most of his works turned out heavily influenced(or just copied) from many famous western musicians and genres. Their debut was a pop/rap/dance song which made them very popular was very similar to ‘Milli Vanilli’ songs. They used & copied some metal elements on their 2nd album(Seotaiji started as a bassist for a hair metal band called Sinawi) and then mimicking ‘gangsta rap’ on their 3rd, sounded exactly like Cypress Hill. They tried to copy and mimic other popular genre such as Nu Metal and Alternative metal, but never got the fame again after everyone can find any music on internet. Once almost a national hero & musical genius, but now just a shameful memory for even his old fans
