This week I'm reacting to our discord community favorite Christmas songs. This next one is from ( Kitsune ) Christmalo.win Live in concert with a Nightmare Before Christmas theme. The lyrics portray Santa as corrupt and tormenting the innocent witches of a neighboring Halloweentown. Seo Taiji is regarded in South Korea as the experimental trailblazer of modern Korean music including rock, metal, rap, hip hop, and pop genres. He started in a metal band, went to a hip hop/pop group when that disbanded when back to metal, and now he is a solo artist doing all genres. He is mentioned in R.O.B. chapter 1, the first 3 minutes, and is considered 1st gen kpop.

R.O.B. = Rise of Bangtang, chapter 1. Sorry I should have spelled that out! I've been waiting all week for this reaction because it's so out there musically. There's a 10 minute mv that ties into the lyrics too. You are going to see more of Seo Taiji as you get further along into your BTS journey. Seo Taiji did a 25 year anniversary concert where he brought BTS on for a good portion of the concert. They rapped, sang and danced with him on his biggest hits. It was a big deal at the time because he was "passing the torch" and recognizing them as the next generation. Thanks again for reacting to my pick and Merry Christmas!

Thats THE Seotaiji......he is the one that rocked S.Korea to their heels by introducing hip hop in the 90s. It was like giving people used to candles.....electricity He is revered. Seotaiji and the boys. God status.

seo taiji!!! oh man its impossible to summarize just how colossal an impact this guy has had on s korea's modern music scene. he's been releasing hits and causing shockwaves since the early 90s, and though idk if he himself is technically considered kpop, due to his stint in the band 'seo taiji and the boys', he is kinda considered the father of kpop? he had a smash success with the song nan arayo (i know) in 1992 which popularized all the trends which make up modern kpop: the rap/pop combo with unique beats (in that case new jack swing) and a dance-heavy performance. the debut performance of nan arayo was heavily criticized by music show judges who couldn't understand what the f the appeal was, but the instant enormous success of the song and video is the reason why kpop as we know it today even exists. seo taiji also went on to write a lot of controversial (but very popular) songs with political lyrics that criticized the korean govt, tackled social issues and changed the conversation around music censorship. he was arguably more popular than the early 1st gen kpop bands (the first of which debuted in 1996) and continues to have a successful career even now, which is pretty impressive too. if you like covers - i think seo taiji recently did a series of collabs with bts where they covered some of his songs as a kind of passing the torch thing? dreamcatcher did a cover of one of his rock songs, and i vaguely remember heechul (from super junior) covering nan arayo on some show - masked singer, possibly? and of course, shinee's jonghyun and taemin famously & controversially covered his song 'internet war' (which is very metal and dark), though all the remaining fancams of that concert are, like, potato quality. anyway, it was a pleasure to see this! merry christmas and thanks for the reaction!

I am Korean Seo Taiji is a genius who makes all the instruments, composing, writing, producing, and adapting all of his albums. I recommend the Seo Taiji Symphony with the Seo Taiji and Philharmonic. It's absolutely awesome.

Yes, the founder of k pop himself, the “2pac of k pop” Seo taji. The legend himself. He is the leader of the first k pop group ever ,” Seo Taji and the boys”. One of the members is YG(yes , the owner of the label YG entertainment). SEO Taji calls BTS his successors and the next leaders of Korean music. BTS performed a tribute concert with him. Kind of like “passing the torch of greatness”. Everyone has Huge respect for this man. You can see the essence of k pop here. He's smashing a few different genres together and somehow making it work. This is also why most pop artists are versatile.

What a fun reaction! I remember when I listened to Christmalowin for the first time. I was very confused since it sounded so different from his previous music (as he always does). Interestingly, words like "chaotic" and "control" can often go together in his music, which is the perfect description. You know which channel I think is super underrated? Metal Piano Music. The guy spends weeks composing classic metal songs into classical/relaxing piano pieces and he hardly gets any views. I love his arrangement of The Sentinel by Judas Priest. That dude deserves millions of followers.

Late comment... As previous commenters have said, Seo Taiji pretty much inadvertently founded modern KPop, about 30 years ago. He has spanned diverse music genres, though in a limited sense in only the western sphere of genres (hiphop, rock/metal, piano ballads, reggae, pop, EDM/synth, etc), so not in the all-encompassing ethnomusicologic sense. Since I see that you also react to KPop music, just realize that BTS, Blackpink, Dreamcatcher, TXT & all the hundreds of KPop bands that have since come to fruition, would & could not have existed, if it wasn't for Seo Taiji. Also, if you did not know, he did a concert in 2017 that featured BTS. You can find a concert snippet live performance of "Classroom Idea" featuring BTS, where BTS/Taiji is rapping to rock/metal. What this also means is that KPop was founded by a rock/metal musician. You probably did not know that. I hope you can react to "Classroom Idea" (Live, featuring BTS). You can also find & maybe also react to Taiji's "Orange", "Ultramania", "Feel the Soul", "Come Back Home". If you find "Come Back Home", you can react to both the original mid 1990's version (with his "& Boys" band), as well as the 2017 cover by BTS (there's also an M/V for the BTS cover, BTS themselves are not in it, just other actors). If you need specific links, let me know. Amidst all the KPop bands in the past 3 decades, Seo Taiji has considered BTS as his protegee, passing the mantle & passing the torch to them, because Taiji & BTS have in their music "stuck it to the man", making socio-cultural changes & commentary.
