It's usually a pad of material to stop runaway planes called 'engineered material arresting system' or EMAS. Or if a airport can't afford that, it's usually a plot of sand, grass or anything to stop a plane and not a concrete wall. Some lead straight into water. Which is better than exploding on a concrete wall.

very bad design of the airport is the main cause of this tragedy, if there hadn't been the radioantenna grid mounted on reinforced concrete wall righ after the runway, the plane would've decelerated and at least remained more intact
